What the title says really. Especially from places like india who can afford a space program and nuclear power

PotatoesPastaAndBread · 27/12/2015 17:02

No I don't agree.

Not because we shouldn't help people in the uk affected by floods, but because the overseas aid budget is tiny compared to the budget for, say, Trident or HS2. Not to mention the amount of money the government loses in unpaid tax because it panders to big companies instead of holding them to account.

We have plenty money. It's about how we choose to sepnd it.

ghostyslovesheep · 27/12/2015 17:03

OP can you explain what you think the money should be spent on 'helping' these 'poor people' ? That isn't a) already being done or b) covered by insurance?

Samcro · 27/12/2015 17:03

Where is all this money going to come from?
We have no money, budgets are being slashed.

Pootles2010 · 27/12/2015 17:04

I know the north isn't as wealthy as South but we can feed ourselves ta very much Grin

Ohbehave1 · 27/12/2015 17:07

Ghostly. Do you think with things being so tight everyone can afford insurance? Especially if they live in property that is hard to insure because of previous floods.

You make it sound like everyone in the UK is living a life of luxury. When quite clearly there are those that have to chose between heating and food.

OP posts:
HellesBelles01 · 27/12/2015 17:09

Samcro - who says we have no money? Budgets are being slashed but not across the board. Plenty of money for HS2, for example. It's a matter of priorities and politics.

ghostyslovesheep · 27/12/2015 17:11

so that's their responsibility - are you saying foreign aid should pay for people who didn't bother to insure their property?

I doubt many of those choosing between food and heating (which is totally not relevant to you rant post) don't live on the river bank at York!

People effected by flooding have had cuts in council tax to help them - flood defence funding has increased and most people have insurance

ghostyslovesheep · 27/12/2015 17:12

and again - what exactly do YOU want to see aid money spent on to help out? you seem to be very angry but have no ideas of your own

summerdreams · 27/12/2015 17:13

Yanbu

ghostyslovesheep · 27/12/2015 17:13

Pootles I guess if all else fails you can always eat t' whippet or roast a homing pigeon or two Grin

AloraRyger · 27/12/2015 17:14

It's not about not being bothered to insure, some of these people either can't afford the cover or just can't get the cover because of previous flooding. Hebden Bridge and the Calder Valley has flooded multiple times in recent years and each time insurance premiums have risen or insurers have refused to provide cover for flood damage.

maddy68 · 27/12/2015 17:15

Does overseas aid stop beng required because we have had a lot of rain?

did this past you buy OP Hmm

hiddenhome2 · 27/12/2015 17:17

Many of these people don't have insurance because they can't afford it. It's not easy to get insurance after flooding.

After the flooding in our area there was an old woman who lived in one of the terraced houses who just carried on living in her wrecked house. It was so damp that toxic mould grew and went through to the neighbour's house next door. When they went round to investigate, they opened the door of her cabinet and it was still full of flood water from weeks ago.

She died a little while later after they removed her from her house. Another elderly person died as well in the aftermath. It's just so stressful having your house and belongings ruined.

It is not just a case of phoning the insurance and going to stay with a kindly relative Hmm

These people will need help in ways you've never even thought of.

PirateSmile · 27/12/2015 17:18

Maddy68 Please do not minimise the devastating floods in the North of England as 'a lot of rain' Hmm

hiddenhome2 · 27/12/2015 17:19

You're fucking heartless ghosty

Disgusting.

hiddenhome2 · 27/12/2015 17:21

Elderly, sick and vulnerable people will die because of these floods.

You won't hear about it though because they didn't drown. It will happen in the coming weeks.

Being flooded is a major stressor in a person's life.

MumOnTheRunCatchingUp · 27/12/2015 17:24

sam budgets are only being 'slashed' but not removed completely

Some people have nothing. Nothing at all

Ohbehave1 · 27/12/2015 17:24

Thank you Alora.

Ghosty - are you deliberately being goady or do you simply have enough money not to worry.

so that's their responsibility - are you saying foreign aid should pay for people who didn't bother to insure their property? Some people can't afford it !!!

I doubt many of those choosing between food and heating (which is totally not relevant to you rant post) don't live on the river bank at York! It's relevant in trying to explain that there are those out there that are in dire financial problems in this country. And what makes you an expert on the financial wellbeing of those that have been flooded in MANY areas of the north

People effected by flooding have had cuts in council tax to help them - flood defence funding has increased and most people have insurance
**
Wow. So cuts in council tax are going to help their loss of everything.

OP posts:
hiddenhome2 · 27/12/2015 17:25

We had a 10,000 flood excess on our insurance policy following our flood.

Who can fucking afford that eh?

londonrach · 27/12/2015 17:26

Sadly ghosty some people cant get insurance. I know this is going to make some houses unsellable if the houses are owned. Money needs to spend on flood defences.

Ohbehave1 · 27/12/2015 17:26

Wow Ghosty. Householders can claim up to £5000 each. As someone else said - you are heartless.

And as I said, totally lacking in understanding of how these floods will really affect people's lives.

OP posts:
MumOnTheRunCatchingUp · 27/12/2015 17:27

maddy but the people here have paid taxes and paid into our system. Do they not deserve help
when it's needed? Help that could be a difference between life and death?

hiddenhome2 · 27/12/2015 17:27

Flood defences in this country are pathetic Angry

Apart from The Thames Barrier of course Hmm
