My brother and his girlfriend lent my daughter a dvd 2 years ago. She is 8, so was 6 then. She loved it and watched it loads.

We offered it back, they declined, and said while she was enjoying it it was fine to borrow.

Anyway, they recently asked for it back and we unfortuntely cannot find it. We have the box but no disk. I looked loads and can't see it anywhere, we have moved since the loan so may be lost somewhere.

I apologised profusely and offered to buy a new one which they accepted. New one on order.

End of or so I thought.

Turns out Xmas day while here, my brother went looking through her room for it, then yesterday they message to tell us they had a look, that she has the box and no disc and could we help her look as it must be somewhere!!

I think this is a bloody cheek personally, not trusting we helped look anyway but also going through her room!

What do you think? Should I have done more?

As long as you offered to buy a new one I don't see what the problem is? It hasn't got sentimental value has it?

Not ok to search a child's room like that. I'd find that a little odd but not a massive issue.

I'd say to him that yes, you know you have the box but cannot find the disc and that searching her room was a little unnecessary

Id say you didn't realise they were so sentimental about it - theyfe welcome to the empty box along with the new dvd You've ordered as clearly it's very important to them. Id also point out you have already searched for the actual dvd hence why you've ordered a new one.

They are actually Russian spies. Their contact is your (babysitter/cleaner/someone else who has access to your house). The plans for the new nuclear submarines which will replace Trident have been placed on a microdot on the original dvd as a dead letter drop, so the replacement you have ordered will be useless.
Your DD has been recruited by MI5 and has passed the dvd on to her superiors so they can track down the mole. She is only pretending to have lost it.

He may not realise that you knew you had the case.

Sounds like you've done everything you should have - you looked for the DVD, and when you couldn't find it, you apologised and ordered a new one.

They're being unreasonably nosy and impatient to accept your offer of a new DVD and then search your DDs room at the first opportunity. It's definitely a bloody cheek.

Tell them you will loan them the new box the new did came in and then in two years' time you will randomly search their bedroom without their knowledge or permission for the empty box.

Although this is definitely at the milder end of familial weirdness, it's still fairly odd. Also, in your brother's place, I think I would assume, that after two years, I had basically given away the DVD in any case.

I would text back "x you shouldn't have given a 6 year old a DVD for 2 years that held such sentimental value to you, a new one is on the way as I explained already. Please do not loan the kids anything in future as this beyond strange, i won't tell ds you had the cheek to go through her room, your obviously welcome in my house but bedrooms are off limits, i wouldn't have thought I needed to say that to an adult, I'm disgusted you though that was ok, as soon as DVD comes I'll deliver it to you"

Just reply reminding them that a new copy is on order for them. You had already looked thoroughly but also only found the box but should it suddenly turn up you will each have a copy.

In future don't accept any loans or watch and return immediately.
