Is this casual racism? Along the lines of ching chong jokes?

I'm BBC (British born Chinese) and feel that it seems more permissible to be casually racist about Chinese than other racial groups. A few years ago there used to be a Chinese tea advert with a kung fu monk and really bad accent which just felt wrong to me. I don't think that kind of advert would have been made about jerk chicken or naan bread for example.

Someone just posted on my FB jokes with Chinese accent, one liners, eg.Tie my shoe Tai Mai Shu

OK, thats pretty rubbish but it was a long list of them. It wasn't to me personally.

I found it old fashioned and un PC. I feel if someone posted this with Jamaican or Indian accents it would be disapproved of.

Am I being oversensitive?

So what would you do if one of your friends posted one of these jokes on your Facebook wall if you have one? Or posted a joke like that on their own wall?

Frankie Boyle? Don't personally find him offensive, some jokes do cross the line but different strokes for different folks.
That charming fellow who suggested that Katie Price might be raped by Harvey? He's disgusting.

TaliZorah · 27/12/2015 17:15

So don't watch him.

Fwiw I'm disabled and female. So not in a massive position of privelige regarding those two things. I just don't get worked up about jokes.

ilovesooty · 27/12/2015 17:16

Have you never had any training on impact and intent either?

TaliZorah · 27/12/2015 17:16

sooty set it so only I and they can see it. I have my settings so different people can see certain things. Some only I can see, others are private between me and a selection of others, some are for all friends.

WMittens · 27/12/2015 17:18

Frankie Boyle is awful. A straight, white man who makes a living taking the piss out of people who are different to him.

And also makes a living taking the piss out of himself and people like him.

TaliZorah · 27/12/2015 17:18

Yes sooty. Hate to break it to you but you don't have to agree with 100%

Why have you made this all about me? My opinion was what OP said was a joke, not intended to be hurtful and in the grand scheme of things isn't particularly harmful to the group.

I see. Good luck with that.

And I'm appalled by the idea that you'd actually condone discriminatory comments and try to hide them from your employer. People in my company have been disciplined or even sacked because they felt safe doing that.

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 27/12/2015 17:19

I think sooty's question about it being exhausting keeping work values and private values separate was intended to be ironic/ sarcastic. But I see you literally do this.

TaliZorah · 27/12/2015 17:20

Ego while I disagree with rape jokes (I think the risk of traumatising a rape victim isn't worth a joke) the reason they're funny to some people is shock value. Not because it's normalising it.

TaliZorah · 27/12/2015 17:21

sooty my entire Facebook is private. Only close friends can see it.

Sorry, next time someone shares a Frankie Boyle tweet I'll turn them over to the Orwellian brigade on here.

WMittens · 27/12/2015 17:21

Egosumquisum

Just confirms the opinion I have formed of you.

I find that offensive.

Oh no, wait, the other thing: I don't care. That's the one Smile

ilovesooty · 27/12/2015 17:22

What about the settings of your friends?

I think you're being utterly naive.

sooty friends of friends can't see my Facebook.

Ego again surely that depends on the context? A group of straight white men doing it; maybe. A group of mixed sex mixed ethnicity mixed ability laughing at each other is different.

WMittens · 27/12/2015 17:25

Egosumquisum
You think they're jokes? You don't think they help normalise prejudice, reinforce stereotypes, add to discrimination, reinforce privilege and make people think their views are acceptable so when they go home to rape someone, it's ok because they've been in a place where lots of people have been laughing at rape jokes so it's ok?

Oh my god, you don't actually fucking think that, do you?! No one in the history of the world ever thought rape is or was OK. Even rapists know they're scum, deep down. There is no normalisation.

Has that scenario ever even happened?

I think that post has just changed (and probably sealed) my opinion of you. Fucking hell.

Ego

Don't know the first two. With Frankie Boyle he does take the piss out of himself too, which while it's not the same, suggests he doesn't have anything against the groups he mocks. Are his audiences primarily white and men?

WDYT of South Park? I'm curious

Tali you don't know about the individual settings of all your friends do you?
Still if you're prepared to be friends with people who think casual racism is funny it doesn't bode well for your future employment prospects.
