To think i should be able to call the police and not feel guilty about it?

Parked outside my flat earlier- the gates to the complex are just by my door, so I cab quickly park by my front door and unload shopping. Left my handbag on the front seat, and had the car unlocked while I was in the house for less than a minute- cat was loitering in the hall so didnt want to leave the bags in her reach as she is quick as lightning getting into stuff.

2 kids (brothers) on bikes loitering about. Came back to my car to pick up my bag and to move the car, only to find it gone.

Parked up, and went and knocked on their flat. Pleasantly asked if they had seen anything as they were cycling about, got a mouthful of abuse from the mother and the door slammed in my face.

The thing is- she opened the door and in a split second I know I saw my bag sitting on their kitchen table (she opened the door wide and then when she realised it was me closed it part way so I couldnt see in). Im not even bothered about the money, but I have some medication of my goddaughters in there that she needs over Xmas- I went to pick it up for my friend this morning as she wouldnt of got there in time.

Now, this is the problem. This woman (the mother of the two boys) does have quite severve mental health problems. They arent getting much support but the flat is a mess and she clearly is struggling

My friend has pointed out by calling the police, it might mean that SS get involved and it would be a bit shitty at Xmas.

As shit as it is, im down a £200 bag, £40 odd in cash, cards and the medication and other things I have in my bag.

Surely I should be able to call the police without feeling guilty? AIBU?

Have you cancelled your cards? That would be my priority whilst waiting for police.

Natkingcole9 · 23/12/2015 16:21

Keep us updated. Hope you get it back Sad

PegsPigs · 23/12/2015 19:03

Glad you called the police. I'd have done it standing outside their door if I'd been sure I'd seen my bag in the house.

OddSocksHighHeels · 23/12/2015 19:04

Any luck?

MiscellaneousAssortment · 23/12/2015 19:09

Hope the police were useful

and stayed outside dixie. And got a mate to hang about near any rear exit if poss. to stop them taking the bag off the property.

EponasWildDaughter · 23/12/2015 19:30

It's been 4 hours since the police were called. I wonder what's happened?

wannabestressfree · 23/12/2015 19:44

Any news?

foxessoxes · 23/12/2015 20:22

Fortunately, they have managed to sort it.

Police came and knocked at my door and asked me in person what had happened- so I explained. They asked if there was CCTV- which there is but the guy who can access it wasnt about today.

They went and knocked on the door, gone for a good half hour and came back with my bag. Money was gone (they denied taking anything out of it) but medicine still there and according to the banks nobody has tried to use my cards.

I have a feeling they are well known because they came out within the hour and I dont exactly live in little house on the priaire land, and its 2 days before Xmas.

No doubt ill get a dog shit shoved under my door now Grin

Cancel the cards anyway

OddSocksHighHeels · 23/12/2015 20:24

I'm glad you got it back!

EponasWildDaughter · 23/12/2015 20:24

Glad you got your bag back OP.

Bugger about the money. I'd be worried that they'd copied the card details down.

Gruntfuttock · 23/12/2015 20:28

They know the number and exact name on the card, the 3 digit code on the back and your address. I wouldn't be relaxed about that.

RoboticSealpup · 23/12/2015 20:34

Money was gone (they denied taking anything out of it)

So the thieves admitted to the police that they had stolen the bag (why else would it be in their house?) but denied having taken anything out of it? And the police accepted this?

Goodness, those kids must be feeling pretty smug now. But I'm glad you got the bag, cards and medication back at least!

foxessoxes · 23/12/2015 20:42

Going to go to HITW in the morning and take cash out, then cancel my cards. No cash, only enough food until Saturday and need petrol so cant cancel my cards at the moment.

Gruntfuttock · 23/12/2015 20:46

I can't fathom why the police just got the bag back, but didn't arrest them for theft, especially as there was proof they took the bag and the money was gone. Couldn't be bothered with the paperwork?

hibbleddible · 23/12/2015 20:47

I hope the police will pursue them for theft regarding the cash?

And I'm glad you are cancelling the cards.

Police and social services sounds like the best thing for this family!

4yoniD · 23/12/2015 20:48

Surely the Police can see they stole the money? They must prosecute, surely? It is a crime isn't it?

(I am a little touchy as I had my purse stolen a few years back and the Police refused to register it as a crime because "they wouldn't be able to catch the person who did it :S aka it would make their stats look bad. Only had about 80p cash in it, and cancelled all my cards without mishap, so not the end of the world)

foxessoxes · 23/12/2015 20:52

It wasnt the cash and cards I was worried about, it was the medication. I told them as long as I got that back I wasnt bothered so I think it just made life easier for them.

If they use my card details I will know within hours and then I can report it as a fraud so im really not that worried about it especially considering I have about £20 in the bank

cestlavielife · 23/12/2015 20:55

Never leave your handbag in unlocked car !

swg1 · 23/12/2015 20:56

I think if you call your bank they will allow you to cancel the card and take money out at the branch using ID. At least that was the case a few years ago.

rollonthesummer · 23/12/2015 20:58

Phone and tell the card company now. They usually have lost/stolen cars numbers on the back.

hibbleddible · 23/12/2015 21:00

I'm sure the medication is the most important, but surely they shouldn't be allowed to think it is OK to steal the cash?

As the mother isnt setting any boundaries, it sounds like you would be helping them to pursue this. Otherwise they will see that they can commit crime without repercussion and continue.

CFSsucks · 23/12/2015 21:01

I'd want the horrible thieving bastards prosecuted. The mothers MH has got fuck all to do with it, she is clearly well aware of what they did and obviously condones it (or sends them out, you never know these days).
