  1. Refrigerator Thawing

This is the easiest method for defrosting a turkey — but it also takes the longest amount of time, so you’ll need to plan ahead.

• Keep the frozen turkey in its original, unopened wrapper and place breast side up in a container or tray that will prevent the turkey juices from dripping on other foods.

• Place the frozen turkey in the fridge — be sure your refrigerator temperature is set at 40 °F or below.

• You’ll need to allow about 24 hours for each 4 to 5 pounds of frozen turkey you plan to thaw in the fridge.

Approximate times to defrost a whole turkey in the fridge:

  • 10 pounds — 2 days plus 12 hours
  • 15 pounds — 3 days plus 18 hours
  • 20 pounds — 5 days
  • 25 pounds — 6 days plus 6 hours

Can you imagie the size of that drumstick?

TheSpottedZebra · 22/12/2015 14:47

Moln - I googled so you don't have to. The op was oddly copied from www.stilltasty.com/articles/view/74

No 2 was... Cold water thawing.
In at no 3 was microwave thawing.

A 25lb turkeyShock is that for feeding an Army regiment? Imagine trying to lift that bugger out of the oven.

Neither my freezer, fridge, oven nor biceps are big enough for one of them and the thought of leaving it festering in the fridge for six days and six hours (to be preciseGrin) is more than a little alarming.

lighteningirl · 22/12/2015 14:58

My turkey has asked for a forty hour cooling off period

Moln · 22/12/2015 14:59

Thanks TheSpottedZebra, I was getting fretful.

Defrosted mine in the garage last year.....lost it to the foxes

AlisonWunderland · 22/12/2015 15:05

If you're going to post advice (however dubious) on how to defrost a turkey, why not give it the title "defrosting a turkey" ?
Apologising to veggies might mean thread about making foie gras, GM crops or how to humanely boil a parsnip

VulcanWoman · 22/12/2015 15:26

The frozen turkeys are much cheaper, that's why people buy them.
pigs it's not a capital G on grin.

Is this the site calculator you used OP

pigsDOfly · 22/12/2015 15:47

Thanks Vulcan Grin

I did work it out in the end. Think I was having a weird days yesterday.

PurpleHairAndPearls · 22/12/2015 15:51

6 days you say? Hmm. How long you would boil sprouts for OP, a couple of weeks perhaps?

I bet you're so glad you started this thread Grin

PurpleHairAndPearls · 22/12/2015 15:53

We need PigletJohn. I bet Piglet would know how long it takes to defrost a turkey. Or a human man. PigletJohn knows everything.

I wouldn't get whole Turkey in my microwave.

I think I may have Christmas pudding for dinner tonight. All this Turkey talk is making me feel quote festive.
