  1. Refrigerator Thawing

This is the easiest method for defrosting a turkey — but it also takes the longest amount of time, so you’ll need to plan ahead.

• Keep the frozen turkey in its original, unopened wrapper and place breast side up in a container or tray that will prevent the turkey juices from dripping on other foods.

• Place the frozen turkey in the fridge — be sure your refrigerator temperature is set at 40 °F or below.

• You’ll need to allow about 24 hours for each 4 to 5 pounds of frozen turkey you plan to thaw in the fridge.

Approximate times to defrost a whole turkey in the fridge:

  • 10 pounds — 2 days plus 12 hours
  • 15 pounds — 3 days plus 18 hours
  • 20 pounds — 5 days
  • 25 pounds — 6 days plus 6 hours

Donkey I bet Bob would defrost it in a tower of used tyres and urine. Xmas Grin

Or y'know, follow the instructions on the turkey / given by the butcher. We had a Kelly Bronze last time and if we'd followed 'standard' turkey instructions it would've been pretty dry and grim tbh.

Zucker · 21/12/2015 23:55

Fess up who asked this question? 6 days to defrost a turkey!

harrasseddotcom · 21/12/2015 23:58

this makes me worried. I have a large frozen turkey and instructions on it say defrost for 90 hours in fridge. ive been meaning to take it out all day but still havent done it. If i do it now though it means there is only 82 hours left before it is due to go in the oven. Even 82 hours to defrost seems mad.

Twitterqueen · 22/12/2015 00:00

This has to be a wind up?! Please tell me that no-one in their right mind is seriously going to defrost a turkey for 6 days..... really, really not a good idea.

I love Christmas but seriously, the meal is just a roast dinner with a few (OK lots) of other good stuff thrown in (bread sauce, YUM!).

This has got to be a sly dig at everyone who actually cares about presenting the best meal they possibly can....

Can I add the following to the useless tips compendium:

25 Astonishingly Useless Tips Found In Women’s Magazines

Including gems such as how to make your very own tie-dye bra and the wonderful use hot tea bags as hand warmers tip.

Pipbin · 22/12/2015 00:08

Well Giddy, we are vegi but I have realised that our Christmas dinner will actually be vegan. So what do I do now?

Pipbin · 22/12/2015 00:10

90 hours Harras? Good heavens that's a long time.
I'm only vegi because the defrost times are shorter.

Don't most people just take it out of the freezer tomorrow or Xmas Eve morning depending on side and just put it on the side (in a tray) and leave it?? I've done that for nearly 30 years and never had food poisoning.

maddy68 · 22/12/2015 10:33

Year just leave ot out at room temperature. If you have pets I put it inside a cat basket so they can't get at it

GiddyOnZackHunt · 22/12/2015 10:40

Pip get started now and boil some lentils. They should be mostly cooked in 72 hours.Xmas Grin

One of the reasons I'm glad I don't eat meat is that it seems so bastard complicated.

Fugghetaboutit · 22/12/2015 10:52

Why buy frozen anyway? Too stressful worrying if it's defrosted or not. It's just a big chicken and the supermarkets are full of them, go buy a fresh one

Agreed pip the worry of poisoning everyone never leaves me. Particularly as I'm the only veggie and would therefore have to look after all the I'll people!

I haven't bought a frozen turkey for about 15 years now. Just thinking about how long to defrost for and the Russian roulette of whether it's actually ice free isn't worth it.

Never defrosted in a fridge though.

Is op coming back or this her only contribution to this vitally important subject?

tibbawyrots · 22/12/2015 12:01

Do I need to defrost a turkey if we're having rib of beef? Xmas Confused

Fugghetaboutit · 22/12/2015 12:02

Mmm beef. We're doing beef too. Love the leftovers of beef sarnies

Who on earth has so much room in their fridge around Christmas time that they've got space to leave a 25 lb turkey there for 6 days?

Moln · 22/12/2015 14:16

I don't think I'd fit a whole man sized human (aka a man I believe) in my freezer, nor the fridge for defrosting purposes.

I'd have to chop him up - that'd lessen the defrosting time wouldn't it?

Moln · 22/12/2015 14:18

Anyone else wondered where no 2 (and subsequent numbers) are?

MushroomMama · 22/12/2015 14:21

If this is true and you had a man sized turkey to defrost wouldn't it be abit late to yano start defrosting!

And this why I have my cook from frozen five bird roast
