AIBU to be cross and think DP doesn't need to do this?

Dp has his own office with his own computer, all up to date with Windows 10. I have used it on the odd occasion and made it very clear I am not a fan of windows 10.
We also have a family laptop that I use for work and the children use for homework. He uses it sometimes for quick things but not much.
He has warned me Hmm today that he will be updating the family laptop to windows 10 after Christmas. Apparently this is non-negotiable Hmm
Both myself and the dc have made it clear that we don't want this for various reasons. I am not a fan in general and one of Dd's programs doesn't run well on it (she's tried it on his computer).

AIBU to not want him to do this? Maybe it's just the stress of preparing for Christmas that's making me blow this out of proportion. I know It's petty but I hate being told he is just going to do it without discussion.

Anyone had any problems with windows 10? Maybe if I have some examples he'll listen to me a bit more!

I think not was windows 10 that caused my laptop to fritz out and eventually need a full factory reset leading to my losing all of my photos, incl. those of my children as babies and young toddlers. It has reinstalled win 8.1 and touching wood, has worked fine since.
I would definitely be changing the password and telling him that he is not upgrading. That is non-negotiable

OurBlanche · 21/12/2015 12:56

We upgraded a PC and 2 laptops. I hated the App based previous incarnation and 10 has been a bit of a relief, tbh.

We have had no problems at all - not even the mouse problem that everyone was supposed to get!

But he needs to take look in the mirror and see that he is merely human and does not have any godlike qualities that would allow him to pass such an edict.

OK, if he has a good reason and will sit down and discuss it, but to tell you it is non negotiable just earns him a slap!

Twinklefuck · 21/12/2015 12:59

Just tell him no and it's non negotiable, if you and the kids are the main users there's no need to change it if you don't want to. Put your foot down.

pocketsaviour · 21/12/2015 12:59

You're running Windows 8 on it? Yes yabu, 10 is about a million times better than 8, which was an utter cockup from start to finish.

Only problem I've had is one program, which was built in 2001, which won't run. Not had any other issues and don't expect any.

Has your DD run her program in compatibility mode on her dad's machine?

FoofFighter · 21/12/2015 13:01

w10 on my laptop and no problems so far....

ProvisionallyAnxious · 21/12/2015 13:01

Is your DPs office in the home? If so, presumably he is the one person who uses the family laptop the absolute least, so why should he be calling the shots on what OS you use? YANBU, OP!

That said, if you strongly object to Windows 10, you might want to be wary over the coming months as they are pushing it much more aggressively and indeed the rumours are that they will be making it all but obligatory to upgrade in 2016. A big thing on my to-do list is to read through various tech articles and do whatever I can to prevent the update being pushed on me as the last thing I need right now is my OS suddenly changing (in the middle of a big and crucial project and really don't want to learn a new system).

SisterMoonshine · 21/12/2015 13:02

I don't know. When does the free upgrade to 10 run out?

cdtaylornats · 21/12/2015 13:04

Windows 10 is the way to go - works like a charm. Some of the "problems" I have seen reported are some old games not running, they won't run on any up to date version of 7, 8, 8.1 or 10 because Microsoft blocked a security flaw. The only software that needed reinstalling was my Anti-virus and that is understandable. Some drivers needed updating, but Win 10 is vastly better.

SevenOfNineTrue · 21/12/2015 13:08

*Non negotiable?

I'd be telling him where he could stick Windows 10.*

^^

This

SunnyDays1987 · 21/12/2015 13:13

What's his reason for doing it? If he just wants to then tell him to stick it. If there is something wrong with the old windows or it's a security thing then maybe discuss it. But I'd be pissed off at being told it was happening so I'd likely be an arsey cow back even if he had a legitimate reason!

PaulAnkaTheDog · 21/12/2015 13:14

Windows 10 is fucking awful. My dear father took it upon himself to update my son's computer without checking with me. It's left it unusable. Microsoft have officially lost it.

Iggi999 · 21/12/2015 13:16

You're running Windows 8 on it? Yes yabu, 10 is about a million times better than 8, which was an utter cockup from start to finish
Not singling out this comment in particular, but this isn't really the point is it? I don't remotely understand why dh has the phone he chooses, shall I tell him I'm getting him an iPhone and it's "non negotiable"? This is controlling, I know better than you, behaviour from the dh. He's not bloody Christian Gray is he?

Inertia · 21/12/2015 13:16

Works ok for me, but I bought a laptop which ran 8 and tbh have never really liked either that much.

What is your Dh's problem? Is there a security issue with the family laptop, or is he just trying to show you who's boss?

SouthWesterlyWinds · 21/12/2015 13:17

Is there a reason why he's insisting on updating to it? There's no reason it should be done as support is still ongoing for the earlier 7 & 8 with no end of life anytime soon

My guess is that it's for his conscience, not the majority of the household

Asheth · 21/12/2015 13:19

Yanbu. We upgraded our virtually new computer to windows 10 and like a previous poster it stopped recognising the mouse and keyboard. It's been reset to 8.1 and works perfectly.

MissingPanda · 21/12/2015 13:19

I've had no problems with Windows 10 and quite like it. However, he doesn't get to dictate that the laptop will be upgraded without discussion, especially as he very rarely uses it. YANBU

GarlicCake · 21/12/2015 13:27

He's not bloody Christian Gray is he?

Or Bill Gates??

So. Is he always this overbearing, Maybe?

On the OS question - I'm running 10 and it's fine now, but was a total bastard for the first fortnight. I had to wipe & re-install many times.

There's no pressing reason to upgrade unless you're still using XP or earlier.

jollygoose · 21/12/2015 13:54

as a solitaire addict I liked to reset my percentages daily windows 10 its impossible to do this, only a minor irritation I know but still wish I could undo it.

abbsismyhero · 21/12/2015 13:56

do you know about the family activity report windows ten gives you? when my dd briefly upgraded (her laptop didn't like it so she went back) i got an activity report of all the websites she visited how long she was on etc etc i could look up everything she was doing from my laptop without her being any the wiser

the non negotiable part would give me great pause however i might let him do it and system restore it the next day to before the upgrade and plead ignorance when/if he found out

UkmmTheSecond · 21/12/2015 14:02

I hate windows 10, it's fucked my laptop up, Ran very very slow, took ten minutes to boot up compared to usual 1 min, programmes took a good 10 mins to load up, and every click would take at least five mins to register.

If your within a certain about of days of getting the free upgrade you can revert to previous windows with a click, I didn't find this out until a day after the deadline, but you can still out your old windows on, if you have the disc or product key (usually on a sticker on bottom if laptop), it's a chew on, but very very worth it as my laptop is back to perfect.

Make sure you get any photos and important documents off the system or uploaded to Dropbox before doing an update. I've heard of people losing their stuff. Laptop is mine, but since getting my ipad it's mainly dh who uses it but he isn't confident enough to install anything never mind a whole new operating system.

I'd out a password on so that he can't update it without a discussion first.

shazzarooney99 · 21/12/2015 14:19

Id seriously tell him to piss off.

MyCarHasBrokenDownAgain · 21/12/2015 14:21

This thread is proving very useful to me. My steam powered laptop (almost 10 years old!) is running Win7, and doing very nicely thank you. I keep getting Win10 offers pop up, and it's reassuring to know I'm doing the right thing telling it to bugger off each time Grin

Mouthfulofquiz · 21/12/2015 14:24

I'm desperately resisting windows 10 being put onto my work computer. I haven't got the time to faff about with finding where everything is at the moment. So no YANBU.
Get a password on it and tell him to dod off.

SSargassoSea · 21/12/2015 14:28

Inform him (or not) that you will be uninstalling Windows 10 after Xmas.

I've just installed it ---- then after trying (and failing) 3 different fixes for my cursor not working properly I thought sod this and uninstalled it. Back to Windows 7.

Easy.

I think they give you a month to uninstall if you want to.

SmillasSenseOfSnow · 21/12/2015 14:30

I have a (cheap) ~6 month old laptop with Windows 8 and a very shiny new gaming PC with Windows 10 and Windows 10 is so much nicer so far, and I say that as someone who had used OS X for about 9 years prior, so it's not just me being attached to some earlier version of Windows that 10 somehow restored when compared to 8 (if that makes sense).

But no, if DP saw fit to attempt to dictate to me like this I would laugh right in his face and then have a very long, potentially very tedious rant at him until he knew his mistake.
