To have done my Christmas food shopping already?

We're hosting this year, 18 in total, mixture of adults and school aged kids. I've got one day off work before Xmas and really can't face spending it queuing for hours in asda with a massive trolley of stuff, so I did it last night, with the exception of Turkey being delivered Christmas Eve. Veg is in fridge, will keep I'm sure, we often have it longer than that before using so why not? Obviously will have to pop out for bread, milk, things forgotten etc, but won't need a huge shop (unless I drink all the Christmas booze between now and then Grin

I don't think IABU - but guests here today a bit Xmas Hmm when DH said I'd already done the big shop, as if they thought my Christmas dinner wouldn't be very nice! Ah, sod 'em, time for a baileys Xmas Wink

We are talking about food Xmas day 2015. A carrot you buy on Thursday is likely to have just been picked today in some country, a carrot you bought today was picked last week. Hence its older. Hence it would be fresher to buy closer to the date.

I did big Xmas food shop last night - all dates are ok not that I set much store by them anyway
There are a few fresh things I will get on my way home from work Tuesday or Wednesday
I have arranged to pick my meat up locally on Xmas eve after I finish work at 2pm
More stressed about getting presents wrapped and still a couple of things to buy

honeyroar · 20/12/2015 19:04

Er no, we went onto talking about the past. You said that you thought people shopped daily.. So my comments were about people buying then. Even in modern days I don't believe that carrots are magically ripening on different days around the world (GM ones may) They will be th same batch, just taken out of their store a day or two later and given a different label.

Well I often end up using veg way past its sell by anyway, we've got a big fridge and I often find a packet of peppers or courgettes in there a week few days past the date so I will cook them, wouldn't eat them raw if they were wrinkly but roasted you'd never know! I hate throwing stuff out, and I dont think supermarket veg is all that fresh anyway. So I'm thinking this time of year shouldn't be any different except I know I will still end up in a supermarket Christmas Eve panic buying having forgotten something Xmas Smile

We're doing ours tomorrow, apart from the last few, non supermarket bits which we will have time to get on Christmas eve.

isseywithcats · 20/12/2015 21:38

went in aldi today to get bits and ended up getting potatoes, sprouts, carrots and parsnips for christmas and boxing day as they were 29p a pack on the super six aisle at that price i thought why not they will keep in the fridge, got my meat in the local market last week and thats in the freezer, have been getting bits like chocolates and cake pud etc over the last few weeks, so wednesday just need to get fresh stuff like desserts and prawns salad etc so you are not being unreasonable as people have said most people only shop once a week anyway

GarlicCake · 20/12/2015 21:47

I think honeyroar was continuing the historical discussion, Art.

ohtheholidays · 20/12/2015 22:05

We've done most of ours, just a few last fresh bits and a couple of cupboard bits and the booze to get and that will all be done on Tuesday, should take me all of 20 minutes in M&S.

skinoncustard · 20/12/2015 22:28

Well I'll put my head above the parapet and say I have not bought all the veg/ salad / fruit last week. I will get it Wed/ Thurs . I want it as fresh as possible. I know anything bought today will have been picked a few days ago , but therefore it follows that stuff bought last week and stored for a week is then a fortnight old by the time it's used.
I'm certainly not going to have rubber carrots, limp lettuce and mouldy fruit.
I'm sorry but I don't believe all this ' I store veg for a fortnight and it's wonderful '
