We're hosting this year, 18 in total, mixture of adults and school aged kids. I've got one day off work before Xmas and really can't face spending it queuing for hours in asda with a massive trolley of stuff, so I did it last night, with the exception of Turkey being delivered Christmas Eve. Veg is in fridge, will keep I'm sure, we often have it longer than that before using so why not? Obviously will have to pop out for bread, milk, things forgotten etc, but won't need a huge shop (unless I drink all the Christmas booze between now and then Grin

I don't think IABU - but guests here today a bit Xmas Hmm when DH said I'd already done the big shop, as if they thought my Christmas dinner wouldn't be very nice! Ah, sod 'em, time for a baileys Xmas Wink

Lidl for fresh veg, turkey, cream etc on Tuesday. Late Xmas Eve dash to Tesco when I get paid again for soft drinks, wine and beer. Have already bought chocolates, biscuits, crisps and nibbly bits. This is not very organised for me. Normally I never leave anything until Christmas Eve. I have heard that supermarkets tend to be quiet then anyway as most organised people are already sitting with their feet up, wine glass in hand.

Spilose · 20/12/2015 17:51

Veg is good as new 2 weeks later in my fridge. YANBU OP. I went out Xmas eve once. Never again.

Savagebeauty · 20/12/2015 17:53

No panic here.
M and S on Wednesday 5pm...DS will be armed with his discount card Grin
Out for meals Xmas eve and Boxing Day.....Real Greek and Côte or Bills.

Wolpertinger · 20/12/2015 17:53

Did it all today. Don't we usually shop once a week?

nokidshere · 20/12/2015 17:55

Thanks Artandco - I just looked and there are still some slots but it's 90 quid minimum spend and 9 quid delivery Shock

I can't bring myself to pay that so will have to suffer the shops Smile

honeyroar · 20/12/2015 17:58

I only do one main shop a month, I bought a second huge upright freezer and freeze all the meat and bread products. I bulk buy veg, we have a second fridge for fresh veg. I usually cook it into soups/curries or whatever in the next two weeks, but most veg will keep for weeks. It's not freshly harvested when you buy it at the supermarket, it's cold stored. I just have to buy milk and yoghurt throughout the month really. It saves a lot of money as you always go off list and buy other things each time you go through shopping (or I do!) and means everything is paid for just after payday.

I'd do it (and have done when hosting).

My only issue this year is the freezer is full with the usual monthly shop which we did t'other day, and we are doing a buffet on Christmas Eve. When yesterday to get some stuff and all the dates were for the 23rd....normally I'd risk it and have done in the past, but with christmas the next day, I'm going to wait.

I'm debating going either late tomorrow or very very early the day after.

I knew there was a reason we usually postponed the freezer shop until after Christmas!

needastrongone · 20/12/2015 18:03

Art What do you think folk did years ago, chuck stuff out after 5 days? Smile I get all my veg from Abel and Cole delivered once a week. I got so much last week some has been in the garage, not in the fridge either. It's still beautifully fresh.

OP - it will be FINE!!!

theredjellybean · 20/12/2015 18:04

i think christmas makes us all bonkers...

theredjellybean · 20/12/2015 18:05

its a couple of days....

and its one big roast dinner....

really christmas tree shaped chicken nuggets wtf ?????

Artandco · 20/12/2015 18:06

No. I think people bought food daily years ago

OhYouBadBadKitten · 20/12/2015 18:08

Im feeling a little disconcerted as our veggies are coming in a veggie delivery box and we are picking up our turkey on Wednesday. Weve bought a few bits and bobs along the way and so yesterdays shop looked like an entirely normal shop. It feels way too calm, but life has been so frantic over the past few months so its really nice.

And you know what, if the veggie delivery goes pear shaped thats ok, worst things have happened.

gobbynorthernbird · 20/12/2015 18:13

Mine is done except the veal (arriving tomorrow), and I need to nip to Tesco express on Xmas eve for milk and bread. Thank fuck.

SuburbanRhonda · 20/12/2015 18:21

i cook everything from scratch from mouldy food in fridge

Sure you do Xmas Hmm

Cotto · 20/12/2015 18:23

I did all mine weeks ago and have been baking for the freezer.
Extra bread and milk in there as well.
I must admit I prefer to go out to the market on Christmas eve and get fresh veg and fruit .
I also had a big Ocado delivery-no idea why anyone would do battle in the suppermarket

Lickitysplit1 · 20/12/2015 18:24

Am I the only one with local shops? Also, I very rarely do a 'big' shop for anything. Occasionally do a Tesco online, but mostly I just buy as we need.
I am lucky in that I have an M&S Simply Food and a Tesco Express up the road. But I also have 2 butchers, 3 fruit and veg shops, and just local grocery stores, so really don't need to head to the supermarkets at all, thank goodness!
We will probably have a take away on Christmas Eve, or maybe eat out if the kids want. i have a tin of Heroes in, some Ferrero Rocher, the pressies are all bought and wrapped...
It is DH, Me and 3 DC on Christmas Day, so we aren't hosting a big crowd, but I do think people sen to buy too much in advance.
And if it smells ok and looks ok food is ok to eat!

honeyroar · 20/12/2015 18:26

But Artandco even if they bought veg daily years ago it would have all been harvested on the same day and stored. So a carrot bought on the Monday would be from the same harvest and therefore the same age as a carrot bought on Friday. You don't pick veg fresh all year round..

LovelyFriend · 20/12/2015 18:29

I did mine this morning. Fridge is bursting. I feel great.

Just berries, ice cream and leaves to get closer to the day.

WhoTheFuckIsSimon · 20/12/2015 18:30

I got mine today. All veg has a date of after xmas day.

I don't need to set foot in a supermarket until after xmas now.

needastrongone · 20/12/2015 18:31

Did they buy daily? My mother didn't, she didn't drive, had 3 kids and not enough money Smile

nokidshere · 20/12/2015 18:33

I don't needs lots, just a bit of fresh stuff as we don't have a cooked Christmas dinner.

I avoid the shops if I can because of all the manic shoppers rather than anything to do with me Grin

theredjellybean · 20/12/2015 18:33

suburbanrhonda...i was being slightly light hearted, it is quite a funny thread.

but fyi yes i do cook everything from scratch, that can be...so obviously dont milk my own cow ( have considered it) but dont buy chicken nuggets...will make my own, and if veg is a bit mouldy , mould gets scraped off and veg used ...

i detest waste and like cooking !

Artandco · 20/12/2015 18:51

Of course food is harvested all year now. It's just from different countries according to the season.

honeyroar · 20/12/2015 18:53

Yes! But we were talking about the past.
