I like to buy oddball, but nice gifts, for people but I can get it wrong.

I bought SIL this watercolour for xmas which DH says isn't very nice and grolly. I like it and think its pretty inoffensive. I thinking more thoughtful than bubble bath.

Would you like this as a gift?

She's forty and pretty middle of the road.

I think it's rather lovely. I've bought my SIL a painting too

Didiusfalco · 19/12/2015 16:04

The problem with this kind of gift is that poor sil then has to find a spot to put it up, whereas at least with bath stuff she can say thanks v.much and shove it in a cupboard without worrying you will be offended. Sorry OP - i do applaud your aim to give non generic gifts though!

offensively hideous OP. What were you thinking???

BobandKate0 · 19/12/2015 16:13

There are a lot worse ones for sale in those gallery shops, but agree very dull. Artist wise its painted ok,but no composition, like a close up study really.
Could look ok,if they are lots of other pictures, object d'art around it.

SilverOldie2 · 19/12/2015 16:14

Ghastly, did you leave your glasses at home or something.

BobandKate0 · 19/12/2015 16:20

ghnocci - omg ! that clown is horrifying, like something out of hammer house of horror where the owner gets kidnapped by the circus - is that your plan ?

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 19/12/2015 16:31

It's hideous IMO, however, I don't know your SIL and she may well love it.

Janeymoo50 · 19/12/2015 16:33

Meh, it's a bit twee...not horrendous but just not my taste.

665TheNeighbourOfTheBeast · 19/12/2015 16:33

Aw - you bad people ! op is never going to be able to boast she painted it now !
its lovely op !
I cant see any picture at all on mumsnet because my ad blocker filters them out

665TheNeighbourOfTheBeast · 19/12/2015 16:33

strike through fail !

Wolpertinger · 19/12/2015 16:37

I too applaud your effort not to buy bath stuff for your SIL. I don't like the painting and it is tricky as if she doesn't like it, she's sort of stuck with displaying it.

However I've never met your SIL - if you know she has similar already she may love it.

user7755 · 19/12/2015 16:41

I'm afraid that it looks like something you'd see on the wall in a nursing home. Can you keep it for your house and get her something nicer else?

firesidechat · 19/12/2015 16:43

My husband is an artist, my daughter an illustrator and I quite like art. Not my cup of tea, but I've seen worse, much worse. It's a bit too twee.

As long as it didn't cost too much and your sister likes it, why care about what we think?

There's lots of art out there that I wouldn't have in the house, but others love it.

Roussette · 19/12/2015 16:49

Much prefer the clown Grin

Artsmanouvre · 19/12/2015 17:05

Tbh my taste is twee. Im one of those hipster granny people in her thirties why uses one of those shopping baskets on wheels in town.

My oh wont let me keep it. He lost my dolly toilet roll cover and is slowly breaking my gee gaws

OP posts:
user7755 · 19/12/2015 17:06

gee gaws?

FairyFluffbum · 19/12/2015 17:09

Urm.....

If i can't say anything nice, don't say it all.

dejarderoncar · 19/12/2015 17:14

I was given this painting for Christmas, I think it's fabulous and it ticks all the boxes for me. But some of my friends hate it! You shoupl know what your SiL's taste is and choose accordingly, not just get something that you like.

thewolfof34thstreet · 19/12/2015 17:14

Chillyegg · 19/12/2015 17:20

It's alright a bit um random though. .
Does she particularly like pink flowers? I'd get her a bottle of something nice and chocolate and quietely donate that picture.

nortonhouse · 19/12/2015 17:21

I think art is rather similar to books, or music: people have their own very particular taste in those areas, so I wouldn't give a gift someone hadn't specifically asked for.

TesticleOfObjectivity · 19/12/2015 17:21

That would be going to a charity shop if it came my way. Sorry!

TesticleOfObjectivity · 19/12/2015 17:24

Oddly we have got a painting for sil and bil this year. Ours is a nice one though Xmas Grin

ghostyslovesheep · 19/12/2015 17:25

sorry OP - maybe buy her a lovely synthetic throw with a wolf picture on it ?
