To think MN is becoming increasingly like an online version of

Jeremy Kyle? Maybe it's just me, but there seem to be more and more posts and posters whose stories / problems wouldn't be out of place on JK. It all seems to have become a bit dumbed down and there's precious little wit or intelligence displayed anywhere.

A shame as I used to find MN good for both lighthearted fun stuff and more serious discussion.

lewji I'm not offended, just disappointed in the Jeremy Kyleness of MN these days. It would take much much more than a random post on the Internet to offend me

lewji I'm not offended

But you completely missed my point. More likely this type of thread is designed to offend people who post in MN. Don't you think?
Think carefully.

Lweji · 19/12/2015 14:41

You mean a much better quality discussion level at AIBU, Ego?
Yes, I'd say so.

TheFormidableMrsC · 19/12/2015 14:42

I think there's plenty of Jeremy Kyle-ness on here, but isn't there everywhere? I certainly don't assume that 3/4 of threads are made up naive. It's beyond me why anybody would do that anyway. Certainly my divorce threads were in the realms of "that can't possibly be true" and I am absolutely sure some people must have read them and thought "no way", but they were, every single horrific line.

This is most certainly a great place for help and support and I have learned an awful lot from the wise words of other Mumsnetters Smile

lorelei9 · 19/12/2015 14:42

blimey OP
you'd have a fit if you saw the board I was on before
not Jeremy Kyle stuff, but a bizarre combination of extreme views and frankly an irritating assumption that everyone has a ton of money and you must be evil if you don't

I appreciate there are some mad things here but that's humanity generally.

I think MN is painfully middle class actually. People getting angry about lots and lots of first world problems

Agree with whoever said upthread that it less bearpit like than it was. A friend of a friend had a bit of a disagreement about beast feeding here a few years ago, she let off some steam on another, totally unrelated, forum and she was basically hunted down all over the interweb. I don't think that anyone could be arsed to do that anymore.

Personally, I don't mind the tall tales, it's the aggression that surprises me.

Dumbledoresgirl · 19/12/2015 14:48

Apropos nothing: Anthony, I was in Oxford earlier this week and happened by accident upon the gateway into Christ Church College and felt a frisson of excitement. 'This is Sebastian Flyte's college' I found myself thinking. And then realised he was a fictional character. Blush Nothing to do with this thread, but I saw your name and thought you would appreciate the anecdote.

See I really don't.

I've been here nearly 4 years and I've never thought it was as middle class as people try to make out.

If it were truly predominantly middle class, I don't think people would feel the need to keep mentioning it. It would just be blatantly obvious, so no need for the label.

Also, no-one knows who is who on the internet, so I think there's a lot of assumptions about people that just aren't true.

The people who shout the loudest and label themselves as middle class, are often trying to convince themselves imo.

Quite why it's important to them is anyone's guess.

TaliZorah · 19/12/2015 14:53

Worra it's not everyone but I see enough comments about "screen time" (hate the word!), PTA issues, very controlling parenting, parking issues, and so on and it just screams MC to me.

Could just be the threads I've seen

Themodernuriahheep · 19/12/2015 14:56

I hope you went out into the meadow and spotted the window from which AB and his real basis spouted poetry through a megaphone, DDG?

SaucyJack · 19/12/2015 14:56

Don't look at me mate.

I know who all my kids fathers' are.

SaucyJack · 19/12/2015 14:57

But I carnt punctuate, clearly.

Brytte · 19/12/2015 15:01

I think the 'Trending' post feature directs me to a disproportionate amount of posts that I would not ordinarily read. It's a shame I have no will power and can't seem to stop myself going for the click-bait.

WorraLiberty · 19/12/2015 15:01

I read them too TaliZorah but I take them with a pinch of salt.

No-one knows whether those poster's kids are glued to their Xboxes all day while they're typing that.

I truly believe a lot of people just type 'the expected reply', rather than the actual reality.

Which is weird really because on a forum like this, that actually encourages name changing, you'd think people might be more honest.

But since MN really doesn't resemble real life for so many people, I'd say there aren't that many honest posters around.

Dumbledoresgirl · 19/12/2015 15:02

I didn't themodernuriahheep, but if I get to go back regularly, I will certainly make sure I do.

TaliZorah · 19/12/2015 15:04

Worra I have wondered whether people are exaggerating on here. I think they do, I wonder how many are genuine

doitanyways · 19/12/2015 15:07

I don't think Mumsnet is very middle class any more. It certainly used to be but there are a lot of posters who lead lives that seem rather chaotic.

magimedi · 19/12/2015 15:10

Plenty of MC people lead chaotic lives.

Could we install DNA tests before anyone can join and 'security' in case it gets all a bit mouthy?

doitanyways · 19/12/2015 15:14

Depends on the type of chaos Wink

Lweji · 19/12/2015 15:15

Definitely lie detector tests.
