To not prepare/provide a veggie 'dish' for Chrimbo dinner?

SantanaBinLorry · 19/12/2015 09:24

I'm all sorted for next week, pressies bought/made and wrapped. Meat and stuffing in freezer. Getting veg and puddings and booze on Tuesday.
Feeding 10 (four if us, 6 guests) for Christmas dinner, no problem, love a full table :)
Last minute invitation given to our friend, who will be rhe only veggie at the table.
I honestky cant be arsed to prepare a special veggie dish for the main course.
Starters are veggi - Cashew and swee tpotato pate and Pumpkin and honey soup (ill make this without chicken stock)
Loads of veg, roasties, parsnips, sprouts (now not with bacon) carrots, peas and beans, mashed carrot and swead and potato and leek gratin (sp?).
Ill make some sausage free stuffing & gravy. All three puddings are meat free :)
Veggies - would you be happy with this as a christmas dinner? Or would you expect a meat replacement... e.g. nut roast?
Not in the uk, so no easy couldren/LMc to chuck in the oven... Id have to make from scratch.
AIBU to not bother, I think the above is more than enough?

Sounds lovely to me, plenty of food

Just quoting from your OP, OP Smile

Sounds lovely and I might to be about to add a gratin type dish to ours. Plenty meat free there and also not attention drawing, which it would be if you'd done 2 lots of sprouts or soup. YANBU and hope you enjoy! Also intrigued as to where you live!

Fratelli · 19/12/2015 10:48

I'm not even veggie and I would love that! Sounds delicious! Yanbu at all

SantanaBinLorry · 19/12/2015 10:48

You're right, It does Charley, it really does. Kids grew them from seed. A joyous thing all round.
Everything else got fried in the summer sun!! Pumpkin and lettuce only thing that survived :)
We've got the lay of the land/roof now, growing without soil is tough. Hopefully ALL next chrimbos veg will be from the roof.

:) Suburban, Not arsed/cant be arsed is probably a much over used phrase in this house, with very little weight to it. I cant be arsed to turn the telly over sometimes :)

You're doing a meat free stuffing anyway, there is very little difference between a meat free stuffing and a (basic end of the spectrum) nut roast, no need for or point in a separate nut roast.

Can you buy ready-made pastry where you are? Wrap a mushroom in a bit of pastry with a drizzle of oil and some herbs - takes less than a minute to prepare and doesn't take much oven space.

ObsidianBlackbirdMcNight · 19/12/2015 10:59

Id be happy with that lovely dinner myself! Maybe keep back a bit of the pate for him to have with the dinner? Or for an easy thing you could roast field mushrooms and add a bit of cheese. Totally easy and non effort.

GiddyOnZackHunt · 19/12/2015 10:59

We're hosting this year. I am veggie. I will be cooking a bird for everyone else but not a meat substitute for me because I like veg and roast potatoes. I have stuffing and gravy for me too. Like others I'd see the gratin as a viable centre of a veggie meal.

LizzieMacQueen · 19/12/2015 11:01

I'd present the leek gratin as the vegetarian option.

Sounds delicious.

SantanaBinLorry · 19/12/2015 11:03

We can get ready made pastry. Wild mushroom plait is in the recipe bank for another occasion
The roasted beetroot from much earlier sounded lovely as well.

I'm veggie but I'm also really fussy so I actually get quite uncomfortable and anxious when people make entire 'special' dishes just for me in case I don't like it. I'd be more than happy with what you've listed.

iwantbrewstersmillions · 19/12/2015 11:08

I have everything but the meat but yes just ensure roasties are very and there is veggie gravy too :)

alltouchedout · 19/12/2015 11:11

I've never expected a vegetarian dish for Xmas dinner, the roasties and veggies are always enough for me. Sounds like you're providing a lovely meal :)

SatsukiKusakabe · 19/12/2015 11:13

I think your menu sounds fine, but I think it would be polite to ask the guest, whatever.

I have a veggie in the family and she would be happy without a meat substitute generally, but on occasion she has volunteered to bring her own dish, and as it's Christmas especially I would check with them and give them the option to do that. What if he isn't keen on the starters you've made?

Why wouldn't you ask him? I always say I'm cooking xyz, do you need anything else, you're welcome to bring something. Your guest is really the only one whose opinion counts, here.

Oakmaiden · 19/12/2015 11:18

I love the veg part of a roast dinner with a yummy cheese sauce :)

SantanaBinLorry · 19/12/2015 11:23

He's had Roof Soup before, so I know he likes that.

Im reassured Im doing enough now though. And got some new ideas :) cheers.
Oh, room at the table for anyone who will fly me over some crumpets.

I'm a NON meateater and this is exactly what I do at Christmas I love what I affectionately call the sundries so we make extra versions and everyone chooses their own faves I will make a list of out dinner "sundries"

Cheesy tatties (My fave in the world) like gratin but with cheese sauce no cream
Roasted Parsnips (maybe honey glaze)
Roasted Brussels with cashew nuts
Roasted buttered Red cabbage with cumin and onion

Steamed
Broccoli
Peas
Green beans
Carrots

Homemade
Roast potato
Yorkshire pudding

Then the meat eaters have on top of the above
Pigs in blankets
Main meat ie Turkey or whatever
Stuffing (with sausage meat)

I don't like stuffing so no need for a vege friendly version

The idea that I need a special version made for my main on top of all the lovely food above is ridiculous and extra work that's so unneeded

Kaytee1987 · 19/12/2015 11:36

Not a veggie but quite often eat veggie dinners at home as a pp poster said maybe a little cheese for protein? It looks like plenty food though and very tasty.

isthatpoisontoo · 19/12/2015 11:36

I was once invited to someone's for Christmas, and although they knew I was veggie, they hadn't made a dish for me. I did feel a bit sad, to be honest. What you're making sounds lovely, but could you not provide a bit of veggie protein, too? Even if it's just a fried portobello mushroom to put under the stuffing- that's a stuffed mushroom for about two minutes work.

Ginkypig · 19/12/2015 11:37

Oh and obviously gravy and mint sauce and the lime, no bread sauce as we all hate it!

PurpleGreenAvocado · 19/12/2015 11:38

It sounds lovely.

Breadandwine · 19/12/2015 11:39

I was going to suggest stuffing a couple of field mushrooms with pesto and veggie pate. Bung them in the microwave for 5 mins, job done. But then I re-read and saw your gratin.

Sounds fine delicious to me! (Except for the cheese and butter. But then I'm vegan. Xmas Smile)

No need to get hung up on protein, though, it's in everything - witness the gorilla! Xmas Grin

Hurr1cane · 19/12/2015 11:42

Honestly. I hate it when people make me nut roasts because I think they're gross, but I eat them and look grateful because they've made a special effort. Honestly what you're doing sounds fine

expatinscotland · 19/12/2015 11:43

I'd still pop into Aldi and pick up one of their veggie Wellingtons.
