To not prepare/provide a veggie 'dish' for Chrimbo dinner?

SantanaBinLorry · 19/12/2015 09:24

I'm all sorted for next week, pressies bought/made and wrapped. Meat and stuffing in freezer. Getting veg and puddings and booze on Tuesday.
Feeding 10 (four if us, 6 guests) for Christmas dinner, no problem, love a full table :)
Last minute invitation given to our friend, who will be rhe only veggie at the table.
I honestky cant be arsed to prepare a special veggie dish for the main course.
Starters are veggi - Cashew and swee tpotato pate and Pumpkin and honey soup (ill make this without chicken stock)
Loads of veg, roasties, parsnips, sprouts (now not with bacon) carrots, peas and beans, mashed carrot and swead and potato and leek gratin (sp?).
Ill make some sausage free stuffing & gravy. All three puddings are meat free :)
Veggies - would you be happy with this as a christmas dinner? Or would you expect a meat replacement... e.g. nut roast?
Not in the uk, so no easy couldren/LMc to chuck in the oven... Id have to make from scratch.
AIBU to not bother, I think the above is more than enough?

DD is vegetarian, I do similar for her. I'm sure your friend will be happy with what is on offer Smile

DesertOrDessert · 19/12/2015 09:53

As Iong as the roast potatoes and parsnips have a separate rotating tin, and arnt in animal fat, that sounds amazing.

SantanaBinLorry · 19/12/2015 09:54

cheese checked, its fine. Hadnt thought of that, chee(s)rs!
Good job hes not vegan, theres lashings of butter in/on everything.
Ove space is an issue, but I dont think our guest is the type to bring something to cook... maybe bread or a salad/fruit which is always welcome.
This dilema has reminded me just how much our diet has changed since we moved here. We were never heavy on the convenience stuff in the UK, but we definitely had a stash of easy bits in the freezer. Veggie sauages and grills etc Oooh, potato waffles :( miss those.

Mmmm yum to Wild Mushroom Plait :)

maybe it's just me....I used to be veggie and I think protein is missing from that list, or anything kind of...substantial.

Agree with the poster who says add some halloumi maybe. Does she eat eggs? Frittata quick to do.

balletgirlmum · 19/12/2015 09:57

I'd be happy with that for ds. If it was close family is take him a quorn sausage along but otherwise not.

SantanaBinLorry · 19/12/2015 10:03

possible - I weep for lack of hallumi :(
sanity - fair play for veggie pigs in blankets! No fakin' round here. Our guest is Dutch, so will probably not expecting/and a bit bewildered by those :)
Can relax then, I think. Thanks for menu compliments.

I'm veggie and I'd be more than happy with that. The standard veggie option at roasts seems to be nut roast, which I hate, so I'd be pleased to avoid that.

Pedestriana · 19/12/2015 10:04

I'm veggie and it sounds okay to me. Plenty to eat. Like night, I'd consider the gratin a main, so fill up on that.

abbieanders · 19/12/2015 10:06

Wow, your plans sound amazing. There's plenty there for every taste or dietary need, I think. Anyone should be able to make a very good meal from a selection of your dishes.

ImogenTubbs · 19/12/2015 10:07

Also a veggie. Sounds delish. Although haloumi is always welcome.

BravingSpring · 19/12/2015 10:08

Put the gratin near the veggie on the table so he gets first dibs.

Inertia · 19/12/2015 10:09

Don't go to the bother of preparing a separate meal, but speaking as a vegetarian it's nice to have some kind of protein in the meal. Could you just suggest to your guest that they bring along whatever they like to replace the meat?

Pipbin · 19/12/2015 10:12

I'm a veggie and I would be more than happy with that.

SantanaBinLorry · 19/12/2015 10:14

ok. so, large gratin. Maybe extra cheese sauce?
No bisto, no quorn, no fakin fillets, nada.

Thanks abbieander :)
the pumpkins for the soup were grown on our roof, also the salad and herbs to go with the pate.

As a vegetarian of many decades, that sounds lovely, especially if it means you won't be stressed about providing a main that your extra guest can eat.

Part of me is wondering why you invited them, though, if you "can't be arsed" to provide a main for them and are now doubting whether this is ok.

citybushisland · 19/12/2015 10:17

Sounds perfect to me, this gravy might be nice to pull it together www.libertylondongirl.com/2015/11/26/recipe-thanksgiving-vegetarian-gluten-dairy-free-gravy-mushroom/

SantanaBinLorry · 19/12/2015 10:17

shush already with the hallumi :( :)
counts the months down to 'greek week' at Lidl

MyCatColin · 19/12/2015 10:18

I think it sounds absolutely fine, plenty on offer so he definitely won't go hungry!

nightandthelight · 19/12/2015 10:20

Extra cheese sauce would be great if gravy not possible :) Also would provide protein!

madmotherof2 · 19/12/2015 10:20

Can I come?

I'm a veggie and that sounds perfect to me! Do love my veg though! Perhaps you could let the veggie know what you've planned and say if there's anything in particular they like could they bring it along as you aren't sure what to do? I'd be more than happy with what you are offering though Grin

What time should I come? Wink

Micah · 19/12/2015 10:21

For one meal though, do you really give a stuff about protein? Have a protein heavy breakfast or supper if you're that bothered. If I'm invited for a meal, I'm not checking to see if it's balanced to my standards, I eat it and am grateful for free food :). One meal a bit light on protein won't kill anyone.

O/p- I'd be perfectly happy with that, it sounds lovely. If you're really worried though, just check with your veggie. If they want some sort of meat substitute dish, they are welcome to bring one. But it sounds like there will be plenty without.

Curiouserandcuriouser30 · 19/12/2015 10:23

When I read the title, I thought you were BU, but it actually sounds fine. Just make sure that the guest gets enough of everything, and the meat eaters don't gobble up everything veggie before she gets a chance (it happens so often at big meals and parties) Are you having Christmas pudding? If so what out for non-vegetarian suet. Otherwise your menu sounds yummy!

2plus1plusL1 · 19/12/2015 10:23

Just out of curiosity where do you now live?

Charley50 · 19/12/2015 10:39

Yes where do you live? Pumpkins on roof sounds strange and exciting! That must make up for unavailability of frozen waffles.

SantanaBinLorry · 19/12/2015 10:41

Suburban - Im very much arsed about my mate, we invited him as he would be alone this year. Just not arsed with the adding to my to-do list. Especially as I dont have Linda McCartney handy :)

We're on a Spanish island.
We'll also be lacking Cranberry sauce, and crumpets for breakfast :(
