We originally moved to east anglia fir job reasons. DH and I bought our house without origanally considering schools- they are quite bad. We have family and friends in Yorkshire.

Can anyone suggest an affordable (I. E not york or harrogate) northern town? Ilanyehete north of Nottingham and south of Scotland is fine by me!

Also, has anyone relocated and changed everything? The idea of both of us changing jobs, dc chabeing nursery etc is a little terrifying!

We live in Garforth which is a large village/small town just outside Leeds. The secondary school is one of the top in the City and rated outstanding. There are 5 primary schools which are all at least good.
Excellent transport links and local amenities.

Scholes and Barwick in Elmet are neighbouring villages with good schools, and whilst not as cheap as areas closer to the city are still not York prices.

I live in Baildon in West Yorkshire, right on the moors just up the hill from Saltaire. Kind of north east of Bradford and north west of Leeds. The schools are excellent here and it's much much cheaper than the likes of Ilkley (15 mins drive away) as we have a Bradford postcode. It's really lovely and I'd recommend it to anyone. Loads of children to do in the area and you're very close to Leeds but right on the edge of the countryside. Lots of great places in the surrounding areas too.

Depends what you do for a living (same jobs aren't everywhere) and what you actually deem affordable.

Giggleswick school we called the tomatoes. If you saw the uniform you'd understand why

Beverley Grammar boys school (not a true grammar) got a new head in Sept. By reputation he'll do good things; turned around nearby Market Weighton.

Ilkley is great. Beautiful place to live. Housing cheap by SE standards. Excellent local schools - not academically selective. Fast, regular train connection to Leeds.
Skipton a bit more expensive. Both Ermysteds (boys) and Skipton Girls are among the top performing schools in the country. But you have to be sure your DS will get in at 11. Some of the non selective options are less attractive because the grammars have taken the high achievers and the middle classes who do not get in may then go private.

I would say York is a lot more affordable than Harrogate OP. Do you own a property now? What sort of house would you be looking to buy and what budget?

Because York does it have it all - schools are fine, very good quality of life, good transport links etc

A budget would help here! Also, what kind of place you want to live (town, village, city...), and where in Yorkshire the friends are that you'd like to live near?

Northern lurker yes york does gave it all but we are on a budget. Maybe one day.

I work in compliance and policy for financial services. DH is a maths teacher. We do currently in a property but our ability to borrow on a mtg is very restricted due to dh re-training as a teacher and me being part time plus childcare costs. We currently live in a 4 bed detached around 250k - we can't afford any more than this and dh is very reluctant to move smaller/semi detached (for practical reasons I won't bore you with!)

I am going to research everywhere suggested... I may even create a spreadsheet. Grin

I am fairly confident we can get jobs... maths is very sought after and I am qualified to do another specific financial services role so I am hopeful. It us possible if we move at the right time my parents may be able to help us if needed (obviously I don't want to rely on them and it would be a last resort).

Darlington has excellent schools and the west end is very affordable. Possible to commute to York (DH did it for a decade) but wouldn't recommend it.

Don't look at Durham, very expensive, full of students and good schools very competitive to get into.

You've probably never heard of South Ribble, but it's got some brilliant schools, has amazing transport links, is close to Preston, Manchester, the Lakes, gorgeous countryside, the seaside and has good employability. The houses are cheap too. Penwortham has some of the best schools but surrounding (cheaper) village primaries are in catchment for schools like All Hallows, Penwortham Girls, Hutton Grammar.

Thinking further ahead, it also has two of the country's best FE colleges and good universities not far away in Manchester, Liverpool etc.

You'll get a brand new 4-bed detached for £250k in Leyland and for probably a bit more the closer to Preston you get. www.rightmove.co.uk/new-homes-for-sale/property-49504549.html?premiumA=true

mmm - £250, 000 for a 4 bed detached may be pushing it for Beverley. How about Driffield - its a bit on the up, though I don't know what the schools are like

A quick Righmove search shows several 4 bed detached houses in Beverely. Longcroft is an excellent school and I agree that the grammar is on the up, friends are very pleased with the new head.

Your DH needs to snare a job in an independent school, will come with heavily discounted school fees!

Otley is nice. Near Leeds, Harrogate, Ilkley but cheaper. Good schools, market, pubs. It's not posh but plenty for middle class types :-) Or if you want nearer Leeds, Horsforth, Roundhay are nice but a bit more expensive. Saltaire/Baildon nice too.

I lived in yeadon for a few years. Loved it. Handy for leeds. Love ilkely and otley too. More than skipton tbh. Penwortham is lovely but it is basically split in two with a busy road through it. Whalley? Hmm but actually i don't think your budget would stretch. But the discounts on the private school for staff are considerable.

It is looking like beverley would be a good option- but finding a job for me might be an issue.
