To ask you if there were to be a vote tomorrow on whether or not we should become a Republic country, how would you vote?

Very long thread title... but just interested to know, if tomorrow it was announced that we all have to vote on whether to keep or abolish the royal family, how would you vote? Yes to keep. No to lose.

OP posts:

Absolutely vote no to lose the royal family. This country is terribly hidebound sometimes and hides behind 'tradition' when it's often an abject fear of change.

Behooven · 14/12/2015 17:11

No

SilverOldie2 · 14/12/2015 17:13

No to a republic

BooyakaTurkeyisMassive · 14/12/2015 17:13

Yes. Regardless of any of the rights and wrongs of the institution, it would be too much of a headache to get rid of them constitutionally and they could probably walk away with the crown estates as their own personal property whereas now the revenues go to the treasury.

And also because I find Republicans to be the kind of spittle flecked sixth form politics pedlars that I really enjoy seeing wound up. And I would keep them on the basis they annoy them alone.

Clayhead · 14/12/2015 17:14

Definitely a republic.

I think it's shocking that we live in a country where we have to tell our children that they can never be head of state no matter what they do or achieve.

SpecialistSnowflake · 14/12/2015 17:14

No, lose. I don't like the idea that some people are 'better' than others, and that's what the Royal Family symbolize to me.

BooyakaTurkeyisMassive · 14/12/2015 17:15

And the Queen doesn't 'back' any policy. She's a-political. If signing the bills and not refusing them means she's 'backing' them, she would be 'backing' Jeremy Corbyn's policies if he was elected tomorrow.

purplehazed · 14/12/2015 17:17

Get rid, money grabbing leeches, living off the backs of taxpayers. The revenue from the crown estates would immediately revert back to us. With the massive money saved, get the homeless off the streets. Make the palaces more accessible to the people. Tourism would probably improve once they're gone, it did for France.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 14/12/2015 17:21

Ahem. www.theguardian.com/politics/2014/dec/16/scottish-independence-queen-intervene-yes-vote-fears

Fatfreefaff · 14/12/2015 17:25

No, I would prefer a republic. I think hereditary titles and huge wealth is abhorrent.

Osolea · 14/12/2015 17:30

Yes to keep the monarchy, no to a republic

wasonthelist · 14/12/2015 17:32

It's no more shocking than the fact they are 99% certain not to be ckme PM (with arguably more power) because they go to a Comprehensive school - but everyone seems keen to have ago at the Royals and leave the rest of it as it is.

wasonthelist · 14/12/2015 17:38

No to a republic

OP, I think the way you phrased the question is leading to ambiguity in some answers

Baconyum · 14/12/2015 17:40

No

I don't buy the 'they only cost £1' guff they shouldn't be costing anything! They have far more wealth than any of us could ever dream of!!

They've no real power either.

I agree tourism income would INCREASE! we'd be able to make the most of the palaces etc without deferring to them.

There's also too many hangers on!

At the very least pare down to the immediate family and one more modest residence like many of the European ones.

LifeIsBetterInFlipFlops · 14/12/2015 17:51

Keep

HopeNotFear · 14/12/2015 17:52

No, off with their heads, viva la republica.

Only kidding, wouldn't actually send them to the guillotines but I would definitely get rid off them, they're a drain on the public purse.

PS, its nothing personal, (just incase any of them are reading), you all seem very nice, but we simply can't afford you!

PS - whilst we're at it, I would also get rid of the House of Lords & replace with an elected second house, and I would gladly send many of the lords to the guillotine, lol.

winterinmadeira · 14/12/2015 17:54

Yes to keep

motherinferior · 14/12/2015 17:55

No. Repulsive bunch of parasites.

Kaytee1987 · 14/12/2015 18:02

Yes to keep. Don't want a power hungry president think the current set up is better even of its not perfect.

EponasWildDaughter · 14/12/2015 18:05

No.

Once Liz has gone that is.

harshbuttrue1980 · 14/12/2015 18:07

I vote to get rid. The Queen is a great head of state, but the problem with a monarchy is that we get pot luck about who comes next. To me, Charles is over-opinionated and not politically neutral enough, whereas William seems to prefer the sleb life to actually doing any duties. Any random family has a mix of workers and shirkers, the intelligent and the less intelligent, and I don't think its right that our head of state comes from one family, and that they haven't been elected or proven their worth.

President Blair and President Cameron wouldn't be great, but the people have the choice to vote them out. If Charles gets in, we'll be stuck with him and his political meddling for years.

CassieBearRawr · 14/12/2015 18:09

Nope, I'd get rid of the lot tomorrow if I could.

winterswan · 14/12/2015 18:10

Republican here too.

TSSDNCOP · 14/12/2015 18:15

Yes. Keep.

unhealthydowager · 14/12/2015 18:34

Aahhh the dream of a republic? It will never happen unfortunately, there's far too many people who like to know their place and believe in the inherant right to rule of their royal 'betters' .

The best us republicans can hope for is to let Charles meddle with parliament . Just as the 2nd to last Charles did.
