To ask you if there were to be a vote tomorrow on whether or not we should become a Republic country, how would you vote?

Very long thread title... but just interested to know, if tomorrow it was announced that we all have to vote on whether to keep or abolish the royal family, how would you vote? Yes to keep. No to lose.

OP posts:
BMW6 · 14/12/2015 19:58

Keep.

purplehazed · 14/12/2015 20:08

don't waste time moaning about a couple of dozen irrelevant toffs who aren't doing any harm
Apart from costing us a hell of a lot of money, which could be spent on more worth things. Of course if we didn't have a monarchy we'd still have zero hours contracts, bedroom tax, sanctions and all the rest of the misery, but at least we wouldn't have to think about the massive injustice of it all.

scarlets · 14/12/2015 20:11

Keep I suppose, but scale back the cost. The public is behind cutting "handouts" in general, according to polls - so surely this should apply to all recipients, including the Royals and the Lords, not just those in lower socioeconomic groups.

Nightstalker · 14/12/2015 22:56

I'm back Smile

The original deal with the monarch (George the 3rd?) was that the government would give the government their salary and in return the revenue from the Crown Lands would be given to the treasury but the Crown Lands still belonged to the crown so if the Royal Family were ended then all the crown lands would either be seized illegally (and we all know where that will get us) and the £1.80 profit will be gone and go straight tot the treasury for the government to choose what to do with or the lands would be sold off to the highest bidder and that has already caused problems in London so I don't think we should repeat the mistakes of the past (and present)

Nightstalker · 14/12/2015 22:57

Although I do think that their salary should be cut by at least 15%

Mypubesarestraight · 14/12/2015 23:00

No. Get rid when the queen dies.

VestalVirgin · 14/12/2015 23:01

As someone who is not a taxpayer in the UK, I would be in favour of keeping them. Though maybe only until the Queen retires.

I don't like change, but change will come when England has a king (England is supposed to have a Queen, that's just like it is!), so there's that.

From a tourist's point of view, I sort of find it all very quaint and adorably old-fashioned.

Also, they ARE more sparkly than a boring old president.

Hillfarmer · 14/12/2015 23:03

Bin

BearFoxBear · 14/12/2015 23:08

No, get rid. And let the daily mail sink with the monarchy when they have no pointless shite to print!

BonnieF · 14/12/2015 23:09

No.

In a democratic society the people should choose their head of state. Seems to work ok in France, Germany, Switzerland, USA etc etc.

ApplesinmyPocket · 14/12/2015 23:16

No, get rid. Bad thing to establish a powerful position which no-one can achieve on merit, only birth.

EnthusiasmDisturbed · 14/12/2015 23:19

Vestal the queen will NEVER retire

I really think once she dies there will be a shift in opinion. Most people I know who are in favour of becoming a republic like myself respect the queen she has never swayed from her role Charles most certainly will and will get too involved in politics and William and Kate well not much can be said on them as they do so little

thenightsky · 14/12/2015 23:21

Get rid.

needmorespace · 14/12/2015 23:29

Get rid - the sooner the better.

JoffreyBaratheon · 15/12/2015 00:23

No. They cost money. They were defunct in the 1640s - we should never have allowed them to creep back.

No-one should have power because of an accident of birth. On the same note, abolish the House of Lords or rather replace Lords with MPs.

fidel1ne · 15/12/2015 00:27

No. They're pretty pointless.

fidel1ne · 15/12/2015 00:30

(I would prefer to allow HMQ to finish what she's started, though. Nobody can doubt her work ethic or dignity, so she should be allowed to complete her reign, out of politeness.)

penguinsarecool · 15/12/2015 00:34

I'd keep them purely on the basis they tie the UK together. The moment we go Republic the UK would split up into Wales, England, Scotland, etc. We are stronger together being an island. Saying that though if Scotland vote to leave the UK oneday then that would be the end of the royal family for me.

IrishDad79 · 15/12/2015 00:37

The Royal Family is the first thing most people around the world think of when they think of England, you'd be foolish to abolish but I don't think it would ever happen. The UK's been lucky as Elizabeth II has been an outstanding ambassador for your country. If I was British, what would piss me off are the likes of fucking Beatrice and Eugenie or whatever they're called. How much are they raking in and what exactly do they do? Do they actually have a job?

redstrawberry10 · 15/12/2015 00:46

Perhaps the RF should be funded by voluntary donations. then those who like to be entertained by their antics can pay for it. So, if your 67p doesn't sound like a lot, you sure can bump it up to 1.50 and pay my share? The whole system disgusts me.

Just in case I wasn't clear. NO!

redstrawberry10 · 15/12/2015 00:50

The Royal Family is the first thing most people around the world think of when they think of England

dear god, I hope not. We have a long history of science, engineering, economics, literature, film etc etc etc. I hope we aren't known for people who have done so very little compared to some of the great Brits of history.

UnderTheGreenwoodTree · 15/12/2015 00:58

If the vote was tomorrow, I'd vote yes to keep.

I think we have the most dignified and dedicated Queen. I'm not sure about all the royals, but I'm sure I don't want a republic right now.

redstrawberry10 · 15/12/2015 01:07

I'm not sure about all the royals, but I'm sure I don't want a republic right now.

it sounds like you want to choose your head of state.

SerenityReynolds · 15/12/2015 01:09

Yes to keep

IPityThePontipines · 15/12/2015 01:20

No, get rid.

I would also reform the House of Lords, so that it was for publicly elected peers only and I would take a hard look at private schools too.
