To ask you if there were to be a vote tomorrow on whether or not we should become a Republic country, how would you vote?

Very long thread title... but just interested to know, if tomorrow it was announced that we all have to vote on whether to keep or abolish the royal family, how would you vote? Yes to keep. No to lose.

OP posts:

there's your proof up above, or do you think they are the actions of a queen who cares.

you'd think she'd be a little more generous with our money. People tend to spend more when it's not their money, but I guess not her.

I don't think this makes her bad person. Most people pay the least they can for a service. That just makes her rather common, like all us republicans say.

Quornmakesmefart · 16/12/2015 12:25

Absolutely get rid.

batshitlady · 16/12/2015 14:53

I 'm not so sure about that redstrawberry10 RE: over-spending-royals, it seems she gets through a fair whack of our dosh every year and forever wants more.......Sorry for posting same link twice BTW.

purplehazed · 16/12/2015 17:29

A few years ago she applied for some money from the pensioners heating fund. Despite being worth millions she applied for money from a limited fund that was especially for old people of limited funds for them to stay warm in winter. Apparently Buckingham palace was a struggle for her to keep warm. The sheer greed and entitlement.

redstrawberry10 · 16/12/2015 20:14

Limit to 10 people max.

why support even 10 of them?

JoffreyBaratheon · 17/12/2015 10:24

Or do it like they choose a dalai lama. Go round the villages and towns and pick a random baby. As essentially, that's what royalty already is.

When that one dies - go and find another, don't allow them to establish dynasties. He seems to be the only religious leader (apart fro the current Pope) with anything constructive, intelligent or useful to say - so that system has something to be said for it. And you cut out the hangers-on, that way.

We could turn all the palaces into tourist attractions for American tourists and monetise it a bit and all the paintings and artefacts should belong to all of us. I have long suspected a good waxwork would bring in the same tourist dollar as the real thing.

BlueJug · 17/12/2015 17:37

No. Like the RF - someone would have to do the job.

witsender · 17/12/2015 17:52

Get rid. Ridiculously outdated.

redstrawberry10 · 17/12/2015 21:07

someone would have to do the job.

i'll do it for 1/10 the price.

purplehazed · 17/12/2015 21:24

No one has to do the job, we'd get by fine without them. France did.

PurpleDaisies · 17/12/2015 21:29

purple France has both a prime minister and a president-I thought the president had the head of state role, basically shaking hands with important people and posing for photos.

redstrawberry10 · 17/12/2015 21:31

The french president has real powers. he does a lot more than shake hands.

PurpleDaisies · 17/12/2015 21:37

Apologies, I'm confusing France and Ireland (!). That's what happens when you open the mulled wine then try and think straight...

regenerationfez · 17/12/2015 22:01

I like the Irish system, with a second preference for the European monarchies- very pared back- maybe 2 official residences for the Head of state and their family. None of this waiting round until past retirement age for your mother to die so you can have a couple of years of being King. Especially no security, money or public profile for anyone other than the HoS and the heir. I think once The Queen goes, we'll have a. few years of an ancient Charles, then once Wills gets in, there will be a massive overhaul. I really can't see George being King.

purplehazed · 17/12/2015 22:10

The thing is, they're just ordinary people. I don't get all the adulation and reverence.

ComposHatComesBack · 18/12/2015 01:49

I think that's what oil do for the. Monarchy in the end, increased life expectancy. Charles will in all likelihood come to the throne in his 70s, already an old man, have 20 years in the main job before his balding and dull son has a shot at the main gig similarly late in life.

batshitlady · 18/12/2015 07:34

They'll be a change in perception when that all happens. I'm not sure we'll have a massive overhaul though. That implies the institution will be paired right down, the hangers-on jettisoned, the civil list cut and greatly reduced, they start paying tax. I really hope you're right.

redstrawberry10 · 18/12/2015 10:45

I really can't see George being King.

I don't know. he sits there, smiles and does nothing while the country around him toils. I think he could do the role adequately tomorrow.

redstrawberry10 · 18/12/2015 10:46

seriously. Would the country be any worse off if he was made head of state tomorrow?

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 18/12/2015 13:13

I don't want anything bad to happen to his father or grandfather, but I do think it would be fun to have a boy king.

Butkin1 · 18/12/2015 13:36

Yes to keep - I travel all over the world and find that overseas people are endlessly interested and envious of our Monarchy and traditions. Particularly that they say/do what they think because they don't have to be re-elected. I shudder at the alternatives..

Bossytits · 18/12/2015 17:19

No get rid of them. Stuff the rest of the world, they don't have to pay for them.

redstrawberry10 · 18/12/2015 17:23

I think that's the problem with the monarchy. They can't say what they think.

Also, I guess I move in different circles. I get indifference or ridicule. Certainly not envy.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 18/12/2015 17:40

You could have fooled me, strawberry - Charles, at least, seems to have no problem at all saying exactly what he thinks ... endlessly

What he doesn't seem to be equally keen on is being accountable for it Hmm

batshitlady · 18/12/2015 17:40

My experience too. I go to France quite a lot and I've experienced a kind of curiosity. Or a sense of 'how quaint' and rather silly they think all the grandeur and formality is.... Envy no!
