to be sceptical about man made climate change

.. to a layperson like myself the evidence does not seem robust (record antarctic ice caps) .Even if it were true 'the climate' is such a complicated thing affected by thousands of factors. Is it likely that changing just one or 2 of the factors that are within out control would make a difference (or even that the difference would be in the right direction)
Do you still believe in man made climate change or think it is mainly rooted in politics?

cote
you might say that all scientists are scammers.
I do not

but if a scammer tries to sell me snake oil. I wont buy it

To go back to Puzzled's question about the impact of oceans on climate:

In the recent geologic past the climate has oscillated between periods of warming and periods of cooling, with some of these changes being very abrupt (warming of around 7 degrees C in a period of 50 years at one point was recorded in Greenland). These climate oscillations can be correlated with changes in deep ocean currents, particularly in the North Atlantic, possibly triggered by influxes of fresh water from glacial ice melts. The causes of the glacial ice melts are more complicated though, and might be linked to ice sheets reaching a critical mass, changes in solar flux, small rises in sea level destabilising ice sheets, or changes in one hemisphere's ocean currents having a detrimental effect on the other hemisphere's oceans.

'We get that you believe him. Just not sure why'

Because I think it is political which means that I think that there will inevitably be flaws in the science because I don't believe it is based on science and therefore the fact that a scientist like Piers Corbyn says he has found flaws in it does not surprise me because i think it is necessarily flawed since I think it is a political scam.

KidLorneRoll · 13/12/2015 20:46

"acid rain, ozone hole etc"

You do realise these are actual things that happened, and actual steps were taken to mitigate against them?

The hole in the ozone layer shows us that humans are capable of making rapid changes to our environment, and how slowly the environment recovers from them. Within a few years of the hole being discovered, the montreal protocol was established to ban cfcs. The ozone layer won't fully recover until at least the 2050's.

Head. Sand. Out.

claig What do you think happens to the carbon in the Earth's atmosphere? For the love of God, please don't say you don't understand the science!

Squirrelled.
good reminder of an important question.

If we understood how clouds worked. Ocean cycles and currents.
the hydrological cycle

I would be a lot happier to listen to the scientists.
When people claim to understand stuff they clearly don't understand, I treat them as con men.

CoteDAzur · 13/12/2015 20:48

Of course worries of climate change are based on the science. What a ridiculous thing to say.

You don't understand the science so you pretend it has nothing to do with a debate about global climate.

And whenever you get cornered, it's all a big fat joke Hmm

CoteDAzur · 13/12/2015 20:49

"When people claim to understand stuff they clearly don't understand, I treat them as con men"

Are you saying claig is here to con us?

UnderCrackers5 · 13/12/2015 20:51

not claig. just you :)

claig · 13/12/2015 20:51

'What do you think happens to the carbon in the Earth's atmosphere?'

I believe that it enters nature's cycle and is used to help plants grow and help green and trees to flourish on earth, I think it is part of the mechanism of nature that facilitates growth and greenery

KidLorneRoll · 13/12/2015 20:53

"I would be a lot happier to listen to the scientists"

But presumably are happy to live in a world which allows you to post that comment on the internet. I don't have enough fingers, toes and knees to count how many scientific discoveries were required to lead you to that point. But hey ho.

CoteDAzur · 13/12/2015 20:53

Yeah well, welcome to MN Under. You were obvious from the second you showed up on this thread.

UnderCrackers5 · 13/12/2015 20:53

look. Its not carbon that we are talking about

It's carbon dioxide.

if people cannot even use the correct terms, what chance do we have ?

FreeWorker1 · 13/12/2015 20:53

The general public do not understand the science at all!

The scientists used to call it global warming and now they call it climate change because the temperature has stopped rising.

Do scientists even agree what is happening? Could the planet actually be entering a cooling phase? We just don't actually know. The science is far from settled.

SquirrelledAway · 13/12/2015 20:54

"When people claim to understand stuff they clearly don't understand, I treat them as con men."

Good advice to Piers Corbyn when he decided that he could predict earthquakes on the basis of solar activity.

UnderCrackers5 · 13/12/2015 20:55

cote. you are wrong.

your conspiracy theory nature is showing

I am not a sock puppet

KidLorneRoll · 13/12/2015 20:55

You don't need to believe anything about what happens to all that C02. We can measure it. What is happening is a lot more is hanging around in the atmosphere, because a long more is being released. By us.

to be sceptical about man made climate change
Mistigri · 13/12/2015 20:56

You can't debate complicated subjects (especially ones that require a basic science education) with stupid uneducated people. I don't even know why anyone bothers trying. You cannot educate someone who is determined to remain uninformed about basic science that has been established for over a hundred years.

KidLorneRoll · 13/12/2015 20:56

"The scientists used to call it global warming and now they call it climate change because the temperature has stopped rising."

Nope. Wrong. The scientific term has always been climate change, or climate modification.

Furiosa · 13/12/2015 20:58

claig Under what natural mechanism do you believe this carbon would have been allowed out into the world without human involvement and how do you account for the fact that massive amounts have diffused into the oceans and have lowered the pH level?

CoteDAzur · 13/12/2015 20:58

"The scientists used to call it global warming and now they call it climate change because the temperature has stopped rising"

Temperatures have NOT stopped rising.

The 10 warmest years in the 134-year record all have occurred since 2000, with the exception of 1998. The year 2014 ranks as the warmest on record.

larrygrylls · 13/12/2015 20:59

Ego,

Increased light reflectance decreases temperature, it does not increase it. It is called the albedo effect.

Hard to take the scientific high ground and misunderstand this.

claig · 13/12/2015 20:59

For those with an open mind, not convinced by government grant arguments, here is Piers Corbyn, brother of Labour leader, Jeremy Corbyn, on This Week with Andrew Neill, Michael Portillo and Alan Johnson.

Hold onto your horses if you dare to listen because it is the real deal, Piers spares no government grant blushes, he goes all out using words like disgrace, fraudulent the whole lot. he says "it is a con and must be closed down".

The man should be awarded a knighthood and appointed as Chief Scientific Adviser but of course we all know he won't ever be.
