to be sceptical about man made climate change

.. to a layperson like myself the evidence does not seem robust (record antarctic ice caps) .Even if it were true 'the climate' is such a complicated thing affected by thousands of factors. Is it likely that changing just one or 2 of the factors that are within out control would make a difference (or even that the difference would be in the right direction)
Do you still believe in man made climate change or think it is mainly rooted in politics?

claig Do you dispute that all organisms on the planet are carbon based?

claig · 13/12/2015 20:25

'You didn't look it up at all in the hour that passed since you were asked the question'

I am not a cheat.

claig · 13/12/2015 20:25

'Do you dispute that all organisms on the planet are carbon based?'

No

Lweji · 13/12/2015 20:26

You could also say you believe in fairies. It would hardly prove they exist.

CoteDAzur · 13/12/2015 20:26

"I agree with Piers Corbyn. You ask me why, and I say because that is what I believe."

We Realise That You Believe It.

"Because I believe it" is not a valid answer to "Why do you think he is right".

claig So fossil fuels contain carbon?

UnderCrackers5 · 13/12/2015 20:32

carbon dioxide contains oxygen.

twice as much as carbon in fact.

heeeeyyyy oxygen pollution

claig · 13/12/2015 20:33

'Egosumquisum, this is AIBU "to be sceptical about man made climate change". I said YADNBU because that is what I believe. I don't believe what you believe.

But you agree with him because.... I think he knows what he is talking about

'And you don't agree with the 97% of other scientists because.....' I think they mainly get government grants which may influence their opinions

'What persuasive scientific argument has he used that the others haven't' He says it is a total scam based on fraudulent science in his opinion and he has challenged teh alarmists to be public debate in which he believes he would trounce them. I think he has got a point.

'What scientific arguments don't you believe from the other scientists?'
I don't believe in their tipping points, their Climategate data, their predictions of the effect of temperature increase on the oceans and many other things that Piers Corbyn is better at explaining than me

claig · 13/12/2015 20:33

claig So fossil fuels contain carbon?

Yes

Furiosa · 13/12/2015 20:35

claig I read your last post, but please answer my question.

CoteDAzur · 13/12/2015 20:35

So someone said something is a scam and you believed it because you will always believe a conspiracy theorist over "the establishment"?

Furiosa · 13/12/2015 20:36

clag x-post.

So humans have been burning fossil fuels and releasing carbon into the atmosphere?

For such a sceptic you can be very gullible.
You decide to believe someone blindly and just go with it?

UnderCrackers5 · 13/12/2015 20:37

But there are scams CoteCazur

The ETS are rife with corruption.

as you very well know

KidLorneRoll · 13/12/2015 20:39

50 years from now, and probably sooner, skeptics of man-made climate change will be looked at in a similar manner to flat earthers.

The evidence is overwhelming. Even a large number of oil companies have given up fighting it and realise that there is a sea change coming. The only question is whether we can act quickly enough to ensure that in 100 years the planet isn't a desert.

claig · 13/12/2015 20:40

'So someone said something is a scam and you believed it because you will always believe a conspiracy theorist over "the establishment"?'

No because there are thousands of conspiracy theories and lots of them are wrong. I don't think Piers Corbyn is wrong, I believe him.

CoteDAzur · 13/12/2015 20:40

But there are scams =/= Everything scientists agree on is a scam.

50 years from now , alarmists will be seen to have been promoting another false scare

imminent ice age, acid rain, ozone hole etc.

claig · 13/12/2015 20:41

'So humans have been burning fossil fuels and releasing carbon into the atmosphere?'

Yes

CoteDAzur · 13/12/2015 20:41

We get that you believe him. Just not sure why, since you don't seem to understand even the most basic ideas underlying climate change research.

CoteDAzur · 13/12/2015 20:42

Welcome to MumsNet UnderCrackers.

Of course you are not a claig sock puppet because claig is "not a cheat".

claig · 13/12/2015 20:42

'But there are scams =/= Everything scientists agree on is a scam.'

I agree, but I think the climate one is a scam
