to be sceptical about man made climate change

.. to a layperson like myself the evidence does not seem robust (record antarctic ice caps) .Even if it were true 'the climate' is such a complicated thing affected by thousands of factors. Is it likely that changing just one or 2 of the factors that are within out control would make a difference (or even that the difference would be in the right direction)
Do you still believe in man made climate change or think it is mainly rooted in politics?

So why have climate scientists felt the need to falsify and cherry pick statistics ?

So here's the thing.

I have no doubt that summat's up with our climate. however I am not convinced that we are entirely responsible for it. Hasn't the earth been cooling down and warming up again for billions of years?

I am still very glad that the bigwigs are all over this though because:

  • we don't have enough resources to support all the people on the planet today and in future population projections
  • I find the destruction of the rainforests deplorable
  • some days I struggle to breathe well (Central London) and I can see the goddamn pollution

So even though I am not convinced that climate change is caused by humans, I think anything that can be done to identify "clean", renewable energy sources is to be applauded.

JassyRadlett · 13/12/2015 19:24

If we can pay for MPs' bath plus, I think we can pay for Piers Corbyn PhD to present his evidence to a Parliamentary Committee of the best and brightest barristers from Oxbridge that climate change is a scam.

Does any random with an irrelevant PhD get to play, or only those with failed meteorological businesses and famous siblings?

Why stop at barristers? Why not historians? Doctors? Teachers? Plumbers? Why would any of those people be qualified to judge scientific merit?

Do you think Oxbridge's best barristers will be found on a Parliamnetary Committee?

I thought Oxbridge was too Establishment for your tastes, anyway?

CoteDAzur · 13/12/2015 19:24

Why would you say that to Lancelottie, Brioche?

claig · 13/12/2015 19:25

I am not mad, I'm not a man, but I do like to have a laugh about it. I don't believe in climate change, there are millions who agree with me, you have to accept that people believe in different things and some even like UKIP. that is how the world is.

Lancelottie · 13/12/2015 19:26

Eh?
Does seem an odd response. Oh well.

claig · 13/12/2015 19:27

'So why have climate scientists felt the need to falsify and cherry pick statistics ?'

I don't think they necessarily have, but I think they may be mistaken. I think that Piers Corbyn probably refutes their points, among other climate sceptic scientists.

claig · 13/12/2015 19:28

'So even though I am not convinced that climate change is caused by humans, I think anything that can be done to identify "clean", renewable energy sources is to be applauded.'

Yes, I agree with that

Furiosa · 13/12/2015 19:28

claig do you believe the Earth was made in seven days?

claig · 13/12/2015 19:29

'Do you think Oxbridge's best barristers will be found on a Parliamnetary Committee? '

It was a joke, it seems that they make up the majority of our MPs.

BillyNotQuiteNoMates · 13/12/2015 19:29

Well said, GenevaMaybe

claig · 13/12/2015 19:30

'claig do you believe the Earth was made in seven days?'

No and I don't believe in man-made climate change and that "we have only 50 days left to save the planet" either.

Brioche201 · 13/12/2015 19:33

Pollution and population growth are a not the same thing as climate change , Geneva

Ta1kinPeace · 13/12/2015 19:33

Exactly, why do you think people are voting for Donald J Trump?
OOH, do show me the election that Trump has already won .....

Furiosa · 13/12/2015 19:33

Ok, but do you know where fossil fuels come from?

CoteDAzur · 13/12/2015 19:34

"Hasn't the earth been cooling down and warming up again for billions of years?"

Temperature rise is correlated with CO2 in the atmosphere and CO2 levels are now at record levels.

claig · 13/12/2015 19:35

''So even though I am not convinced that climate change is caused by humans, I think anything that can be done to identify "clean", renewable energy sources is to be applauded.''

With all the technology we have got, with all the brains, with all the scientists, I am glad that finally Bill gates and the team are going to start putting lots of money into R&D to come up with clean renewable energy solutions. Surely we are capable of coming uo with something that doesn't involve spending $100 billion for starters on limiting the growth of developing countries by capping their emissions.

CoteDAzur · 13/12/2015 19:35

"there are millions who agree with me"

And billions of flies eat poo. So?

CoteDAzur · 13/12/2015 19:36

Do you have children, claig?

I am just wondering how MN has succeeded in attracting a singular person of your caliber.

Ta1kinPeace · 13/12/2015 19:37

brioche
Pollution and population growth are a not the same thing as climate change
No, but they are linked
which is why China now recognises that the only way to get its pollution under control is to deal with its impacts on climate change

because without that they will be left without soil or drinking water within 30 years

population growth is interesting because on a worldwide scale it has ground to a shuddering halt
BUT
those who exist will want more per capita in their long lifetimes
which i more than the planet can stand if we stick with fossil fuels

GenevaMaybe · 13/12/2015 19:37

Erm I know Brioche, that was kind of my point

claig · 13/12/2015 19:37

Ta1kinPeace, you are right they aren't voting yet, so far it is just polling. But people have had enough of the status quo, they want change - here with Corbyn, there with Sanders and Trump and everywhere.

claig · 13/12/2015 19:38

"Do you have children, claig? "

Yes

'I am just wondering how MN has succeeded in attracting a singular person of your caliber.'

MN attracts the best in the land.

Brioche201 · 13/12/2015 19:40

...and we have now reached the point in what was an interesting debate, where it is ruined by immature posters piling in with sarcasm and personal attacks. Sadly bthis is the way of mn nowadays

OP posts:
Ta1kinPeace · 13/12/2015 19:40

You really think that people would support Corbyn going into an election
ditto Trump and Sanders
WOW
You DONT understand politics either Hmm
