To think it's time we had some new Christmas songs.

Does anyone else find songs like "Simply having a wonderful Christmas time" depressing. Also Slades "So here it is merry Christmas" I find equally depressing. I think the trouble is....they've been going such a long time. I wish shops would play something nicer. There are nicer, but they don't seem to get played.

Sufjan Stevens Christmas albums are lovely

mathanxiety · 14/12/2015 05:15
(to the tune of 'Grampa got run over by a beer truck')

'Merry Christmas - I don't want to Fight Tonight' by The Ramones is a nice peaceful sentiment.

Old but good.

Couldn't agree more about those awful bloody 70's numbers that do the rounds at this time of year, every year. They make my local big Tesco's a no-go area for me, 'till new years in.

I wonder though, is the quality of song writing just not there anymore? As much as I hate the old ones, they are well written, very catchy and memorable. And it really pains me to say that..

FreeButtonBee · 14/12/2015 10:41

Ha! I have just been listening to thea Gilmore's album strange communion. It's brill.

A niche interest one but anyone Irish or into folk music may like the horslips 'drive the cold winter away' album. Also on repeat in December in this house

Will look some of these up. I love a dark winter album, glass of wine and a book of Christmas short stories. < surveys baby and toddlers running riot with tinsel and baubles all over the floor> maybe next year!

I LOVE this! Kate Bush 'December will be magic again.'

It's not new but it's not played often

batshitlady · 14/12/2015 17:39

Right I've found it..This should be number 1..... Now bugger off for another year, at least , Paul McCartney et al...

MelanieCheeks · 18/12/2015 13:45

Oh, that The Feeling one has been played a few times. Feels Like Christmas.

HelenaDove · 23/12/2015 01:06

I heard a song playing in Tesco today that i havent heard since i was a very young kid. Its a song called Senor Santa Claus by Jim Reeves It was originally on a Christmas album that came out in the 1950s My dad used to play this album every Christmas when my brother and i were little. he still has the original vinyl record from the 1950s Got quite emotional hearing it after all this time.

HelenaDove · 23/12/2015 01:07

The whole album was a Christmas album by Jim Reeves.

penguinsarecool · 23/12/2015 01:09

Christmas songs are a dying tradition. Music is too corporate nowadays to do a fun stand alone single.

CatchingBabies · 23/12/2015 02:43

I'm going to look up all these Christmas songs being mentioned. Every year I tell my partner I HATE Christmas songs and am called miserable but I'm so sick of the same old ones over and over that I have come to detest them, some nice new ones would be lovely.

CreepingDogFart · 23/12/2015 07:32

I love all the usual Christmas songs!

It's CHRIIIIIIISTMAS!!!

Snow is fallin'
All around me
Children playin'
Havin' fun

Etc. And Christmas isn't Christmas without seeing the Wham 'Last Christmas' video and thinking how gorgeous George Michael was.

MelanieCheeks · 23/12/2015 08:53

Apparently The Killers have relese a Christmas single every year.

queenrollo · 23/12/2015 09:20

whoever it was that mentioned the Mark Lanegan Christmas album Thankyou!! listening to it now on youtube and it is divine.

Mark Kozelek's Christmas album is my new discovery for this Christmas and we've played it a lot.
Sufjan Stevens also featuring highly.

I don't even listen to the charts anymore so I wouldn't know if any new Christmas songs came out! But I like alternative music so I seek that out instead.

Bedsheets4knickers · 23/12/2015 10:52

Yes . I said this yesterday

That was me ! Glad you like it.

queenrollo · 23/12/2015 17:42

I really like it. Made the mistake of looking up a vinyl copy on Discogs. We only buy vinyl now, but I can't justify the price it pulls!

I agree!! I loved the year Kelly clarkson and leona Lewis both released new ones. Don't understand why more people don't, you'd get a fortune in royalties each year.

Sparklycat · 23/12/2015 19:11

One little known one I love is All My Bells Are Ringing by Lenka
