To think it's time we had some new Christmas songs.

Does anyone else find songs like "Simply having a wonderful Christmas time" depressing. Also Slades "So here it is merry Christmas" I find equally depressing. I think the trouble is....they've been going such a long time. I wish shops would play something nicer. There are nicer, but they don't seem to get played.

I always have a spor for The Eels, Everythings Gonna be Cool this Christmas. Not recent but not as old as some and a grand little song.

whatisthisthing · 12/12/2015 23:12

You need to Google this:

Foden Courtois Band - Jingle Bells

Guaranteed to cheer up anyone at Christmas. It's my new favourite Grin

Hobbes8 · 12/12/2015 23:19

I love that Eels song, Krampus! Also I love Donner and Blitzen by Badly Drawn Boy. It's off the About a Boy soundtrack, so it's not at all new, but it's a bit more current than even-more-ancient-than-38-year-old-me SladeS

Hobbes8 · 12/12/2015 23:20

Ooh! And I Was Born on Christmas Day by St Etienne is pretty awesome also.

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 13/12/2015 00:36

I'm with you! I love that recent one by Thea somebody, "That'll be Christmas", but I never hear it

Thea Gilmore. She has a whole album of alternative Christmas music.

I was in a shop today which was playing a Tom Waites version of Silent Night. What a welcome change. Actually come to think of it , as all the shops I was in today were independent local shops it was the only one playing any music.

Mark Lanegan released a Christmas album a couple of years back which was sold only at concerts. If you know who he is you will understand why this was greeted with astonishment by fans. It is lovely but it will never be played at any office parties.

I really like Steeleye Span's Gaudete.

HelenaDove · 13/12/2015 00:39

Hobbes i love that too.

HelenaDove · 13/12/2015 00:42

Sinead O Connors version of Silent Night is beautiful.

marfisa · 13/12/2015 00:44

Children's performer Nick Cope just made this quirky Christmas single - I love it:

He's donating all the profits to Great Ormond as well!

Stanky · 13/12/2015 03:57

I really love A spaceman came travelling and I believe in Father Christmas. They are old, but they don't get played much. I love Mary's boy child by boney M as well. I love Christmas songs, but only in December. Walking in the air as well, and then there was the newer song from the snowman and the snow dog. It was quite sweet.

HeyMicky · 13/12/2015 04:42

Tracey Thorne from Everything But the Girl released a Christmas album last year. He track Tinsel and Lights is beautiful

DeepBlueLake · 13/12/2015 04:52

YANBU.

If I hear All I Want For Christmas Is You one more time, I will scream.

I think Kylie Minogue has released a Christmas album this year.

Sameshitdiffname · 13/12/2015 05:11

YNBU

I'm BU because I think the 'Christmas number one' should have to be a cubist mad song not a fucking X factor winner

Sameshitdiffname · 13/12/2015 05:11

Cubist mad also known as Christmas

MrsTerryPratchett · 13/12/2015 05:19
. Love this, double entendre and all...
MrsTerryPratchett · 13/12/2015 05:46
. I'm on a roll.
MrsTerryPratchett · 13/12/2015 05:54

BEST LIST EVER. Three miserable ones in a row.

SanityClause · 13/12/2015 07:11

I love Tim Minchin's Drinking White Wine in the Sun, but you never hear it played.

Pointlessfan · 13/12/2015 07:26

Graham Norton played an acapella (sorry about spelling) version of Sleigh Ride yesterday by Pentatonix, it was lovely!

Hulababy · 13/12/2015 08:12

Scouting for Girls have got a Christmas song out this year.

Not sure I can think of any other new ones for this year. No one seems to do them anymore.

BalthazarImpresario · 13/12/2015 09:00

I'm with Krampus

The killers do a Christmas song every year. Look them up they are brilliant. Dirt sledding this year is becoming a fave and one called Dont Shoot Me Santa is the best (better if watched with the videos)

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 13/12/2015 11:02

Cubist mad also known as Christmas

And that must be auto-correct of the week.

akindofmagic · 13/12/2015 11:15

Melanie, her name is Thea Gilmore and her whole 'Christmas' album is amazing. Her parents come in our restaurant and have brought us copies of her albums to play. So she is played lots by one small restaurant on the South Coast! Xmas Smile

SisterMoonshine · 13/12/2015 12:31

So glad of this thread. Loads to look up. Xmas Grin
(I blame xfactor that all these have passed me by - love Tracy Thorn and Low)

whirlybird42 · 13/12/2015 21:21

I'm with you op, I find them grating beyond belief. I saw the ad for the now Christmas album and thought it would be my idea of hell.

I like carols or the old stuff - Bing Crosby or even Michael buble is better than all that 80s shite.

Songlark · 13/12/2015 22:24
I like this one, never gets played much though.
