To think if you're spending a fortune on booze at Christmas, spare a thought for the non drinkers

It's beginning to irritate me how people willingly spend a fortune on nice wine or beer for people who drink alcohol but expect non drinkers (be they driving or pregnant or on medication etc) to put up with cheap lemonade or water.

Aibu to ask if you are catering for non drinkers then you get them some nice soft drinks?

We're teetotal so we're ace at catering for non-drinkers - Shloer, San Pellegrino, water, coke, lemonade, water with ice and lemon and lime, a couple of juices etc. We're just crap at catering for drinkers. A few cans of lager shandy and some of those cheap cartons of Tesco white wine will be fine, right? Wink

Ooh and things like Becks Blue, non-alcoholic Kopparberg etc. We love the taste of cider without the alcoholic kick so it's perfect!

Spiced tomato juice is nice with a shot of sparkling water. It gets around the too much sugar problem. If there is any left over use it in a pasta sauce or something.

M&S does a very nice Sparkling non-alcoholic Muscat for 6-7 pounds, very good to replace Champagne. As I have a very dear relative that has been spending most of the past few years pregnant :) I have learnt to know the good brands and bottles!

I have tipped Shloer,Full fat coke, fanta, 7Up, beer and posh Belvoir type cordials down the sink before now. I now only buy what will get used. So flavoured Slimline tonics, ginger ale, soda and lime, fruit juices, squash, Diet Coke, fizzy water etc.

DH is a non drinker and is happy with orange juice, Diet coke or water. I drink gin & tonic or nice wine, but wouldn't get snitty if invited somewhere I wasn't served either. Am trying to lose weight atm, so am frequently drinking slimline tonic with ice, some sort of citrus fruit and enjoying it. Slimline elderflower tonic, with a slice of pink grapefruit and basil is fabulous.

I can understand that you might be frustrated if you feel there is nothing nice for you to , but I don't understand why you might be incensed at the idea of bringing your own. I don't rock up to anyones house empty handed, that just seems rude.

Surely there is nice soft drinks though for that others use as mixers. After being pregnant over Xmas twice, never once was I only offered water or cheap lemonade.

cremedecacao · 12/12/2015 15:25

Eurgh, not Shloer! Way too sweet. I can't drink sweet drinks all night. I like fancy tonic water, especially with a few frozen berries chucked in instead of ice.

I've only scanned the thread but Aldi has started doing a version of Schloer which, to me, tastes the same. Think it was about a pound a bottle

Bragadocia · 12/12/2015 15:29

There are loads of nice soft drinks out there - all the Belvoir range, the Bottlegreen things, Appletiser and its variants, Schloer. San Pellegrino flavoured.

Where has Aqua Libra gone?! God, that was unpleasant, yet strangely, I'd rather like to try it again.

YANBU - if you're hosting, you want people to feel welcomed and catered for. So providing drinks for all people is the thoughtful and friendly thing to do.

I love a jug of iced wager with slices of cucumber in! Much prefer it to lemon.

lasagnefortea · 12/12/2015 15:35

Tap water with cucumber, lime and mint in it is a tasty drink for the non-drinkers if you have forgotten to buy something fancy

limitedperiodonly · 12/12/2015 17:19

I get fed up with people who try to force ghastly elderflower and ginger concoctions with sprigs of mint or a jush of lime on me when I ask for water.

I don't want that shit. I want a cold glass of water, ice would be nice but not essential. Tap will do, especially if you're going to serve me something aggressively fizzy like Perrier, San Pellegrino or Highland Spring. If we're going to get into water snobbery I like Badoit or Ferrarelle, but people don't generally have it and I don't expect them to.

Definitely no fucking slice of lemon or even worse, lime. Mint is also disgusting.
