...Breed? It not the apparent lack of any genitalia so much as the shapes of them and genetics. If Mr Tickle was to have children with Little Miss Tiny, would the children be tiny with huge arms? Slightly smallish with quite long arms? Could the tickle/tiny genes be totally dominant so that all children will be tiny or long armed? Or even worse, both tiny AND long armed?

This is dire news indeed about Mr Strong! I've only read the original books and have been spared the new version. Sad

In my heart, he will ever remain a glorious, red square : four sides good, three sides bad!

cunningplan101 · 15/12/2015 00:28

The obvious answer is that Mr Men and Little Misses are the Platonic ideal and we humans are the mere hazy impressions of those purer selves. They are the true and perfect forms outside in the sunlight, while we're the pale shadows cast on the wall of the cave.

Therefore, there can only ever be one of each archetype. There is only one Mr Happy and there will only ever be one Mr Happy - the perfect and absolute form of happiness - who is reflected and diluted many times over by poor human imitations of mirth. Of course, Mr Happy never changes - in deed, the story in Mr Happy's book is not actually about Mr Happy's journey. Instead, it is the story of us humans and our struggle to comprehend and come to terms with the absolute form of happiness that is Mr Happy. The ironic last lines of the Mr and Little Miss books are but a wry reminder that, try as we might, we imperfect beings shall never reach a true understanding of Their ultimate and unchanging absoluteness.

I think they must be a representation of the emotion/action, or it really would be nominative determinism at it's finest wouldn't it?

(On a vaguely related note, the most Eeyore-like person I've ever met is called Hope.)

Bettercallsaul1 · 15/12/2015 03:57

I love how philosophical this thread is becoming! We are definitely covering every aspect of the subject!

lorelei9 · 15/12/2015 09:21

Cunning, that's brilliant.

Polka, calling the poor child Hope was bound to end that way. I wouldn't want to read the story of Mr Hope Sad

TiggyD · 15/12/2015 09:53

Mr Hope lived in Hopelessland. A vast desolate wasteland of unremitting torture. [Picture of desolate wasteland]

Mr Hope decided to go to the shops. [Picture of Mr Hope setting off in high spirits]

But this being Hopelessland, there were no shops so his quest was pointless. [Picture of Mr Hope walking through desolate wasteland]

Down swooped a vulture of futility and pecked off Mr Hope's legs. [Mr Hope with legs pecked off.]

"Never mind" Said Mr Hope as he pulled himself along with his hands. [Picture of Mr Hope dragging himself across desolate wasteland.]

Along comes a hyena of broken dreams and slowly nibbles off Mr Hope's arms. [Matching picture]

"Oh well", said Mr Hope. "Somebody will be along soon to help me". [Picture of bloody remains of Mr Hope in desolate wasteland.]

[10 more pages of Mr Hope lying in heap in desolate wasteland]

[picture of dead Mr Hope in desolate wasteland]

"Ah! I've been reincarnated!" Said Mr Hope as he awoke in bed. "Maybe things will be different today!" [Mr Hope in bed]

Go to page two.

Bettercallsaul1 · 15/12/2015 13:46

I'm sure the publishers of Mr Men books will be moving heaven and earth to get Mr Hope on to the shelves by Christmas. Grin

Bettercallsaul1 · 15/12/2015 18:05

Little Miss Cis? Grin

shinynewusername · 15/12/2015 18:11

Mr Messy stops being a pink frizzy mess and becomes a nice, neat shape

This traumatised me as a child. I had very curly hair and feared being unexpectedly smoothed Smile

lorelei9 · 15/12/2015 18:18

Shiny - OMG I also had/have curly hair and had to ask my big sis if that was bad and she had to explain that wasn't actually his hair but his entire being. confused the heck out of me Grin

shinynewusername · 15/12/2015 18:27

Thank god I am not alone lorelei9.

shinynewusername · 15/12/2015 18:28

that wasn't actually his hair but his entire being

Sooo much worse

lorelei9 · 15/12/2015 18:45

there's probably kids all over the country who worried someone would flatten their hair...well it sort of came true when I grew up and got accosted by people trying to sell hair straighteners - you know when they come up to you in dept stores etc!

yes, my sister's valiant explanation of it being "who he was" took me a long time to figure out. I think she drew a scribble to help me figure it out. Bless.

LiviaDrusillaAugusta · 15/12/2015 20:56

PMSL at 'hyena of broken dreams' 😂😂

iklboo · 15/12/2015 21:00

Mr Tidy & Mr Neat are the Mr Men equivalent of Samuel L Jackson & John Travolta from Pulp Fiction. Happytown 'enforcers'.

lorelei9 · 15/12/2015 21:04

iklboo - that is actually quite scary!! Do you think Tarantino was inspired by Mr Tidy & Mr Neat? How can we find out?

TiggyD · 15/12/2015 21:09

The characters from reservoir dogs were obviously inspired by Roger Red Hat, Billy Blue Hat, Jennifer Yellow Hat and Percy Green.

iklboo · 15/12/2015 21:11

I know - don't they go round to 'straighten out' Mr Messy? Hmmm. We all know what that means in gangster parlance.
