To be annoyed that at five foot four inches tall the perfect trousers for me are 'short'

I mean I'm national bloody average. Shouldn't regular length be the right one?

5'4" is the average for the population as a whole but that includes a lot of tiny little old ladies who aren't buying trousers in FCUK etc.

ridingsixwhitehorses · 09/12/2015 17:43

No idea my inside leg but they are jeans from M&S.

Deo I am too short to hold onto the straps on the tube - if I don't get a seat or a place near the edge then I fall over when the train comes to a halt!

Peaceloveandpartyrings · 09/12/2015 17:59

I'm 5'4" and I feel short. I get very excited when I find 30" jeans in my waist size, even though I really need a 28". At least I only need to turn up a few inches rather than with 32" which would be turned up to my knees!

TheHouseOnTheLane · 09/12/2015 18:03

I thought 5.5 was average! 5.4 is short! Sorry OP...nothing wrong with short.

lljkk · 09/12/2015 18:04

I'm 5'8" and tend to wear long. Thing is, I have really short legs for my height. It's just that I'm not fat; most people with hips my size are a lot shorter than me. Confused

BeStrongAndCourageous · 09/12/2015 19:20

I was in Zara a couple of months ago and their regular length trousers were a full 6 inches too long on me. I'm 5'7". The assistant said "we do have an alteration service, to which I replied "I imagine you'd have to."

I also overheard another assistant explaining that a size 10 would be a Medium in Zara....!

BeStrongAndCourageous · 09/12/2015 19:26

And it's extra-weird for me, because my height is all in my legs.

NotCitrus · 09/12/2015 19:29

I'm 5'8" and M&S Short trousers are about right on me - Medium are slightly long.
But I have to shop in the old lady section, sorry, 'Classic', as that's the only one that accepts one may have a tummy and a waist more than 3 inches above your crotch.

DP has short legs for his height too but unlike me, Italian brands fit him perfectly.

noeffingidea · 09/12/2015 19:36

My 15 year old daughter is 5' 1'' and I still buy her trousers and jeans from the kids department. I think she's up to age 12- 13 now. Womens clothes just swamp her.

hazeyjane · 09/12/2015 19:37

I am 4'11" and the only trousers I have never had to take up are cropped ones....which come down to my ankles.

That is something to be annoyed about, stupidarse short legs.

OddSocksHighHeels · 09/12/2015 19:41

snozberry me too! I fly all all over the place on the tube if I'm not sitting or near one of the handles near the side of the door.

I'm surprised people think 5"4 is short. At 5"1 I know I'm short but I only seem a little bit shorter than most people I know, they're not mostly half a foot taller or anything.

Asteria36 · 09/12/2015 19:45

Better to have trousers that are too long than too short! I'm only 5'9" but my legs are 34". There was a time when everywhere seemed well stocked with long, not so now. Unless I go specifically long I get hideous ankle flappy issues. Don't even get me started on "knee length" skirts that leave nothing to the imagination!!

Jibberjabberjooo · 09/12/2015 19:48

Knee length skirts are almost at my ankles. There are so many lovely dresses and skirts that I just cannot wear.

CainInThePunting · 09/12/2015 19:52

I'm 5'3 but have a 30 inside leg so regular fit me best.

i have a very short body. Blush

Palomb · 09/12/2015 19:53

I'm 5'4 too and have short legs - 28inches.

Sighing · 09/12/2015 20:26

5'7" (short amongst my friends, generally i think that's short for my 40 age group) legs are relatively long. Still somewhere between standard and short length.

Pico2 · 09/12/2015 20:36

I'm 5'4" and I have to buy short jeans from M&S. I still stand on the backs of them a bit and fray them. I think my inside leg is 27". In comparison DH's is 37". He's a foot taller than me, but pretty much the same height when sitting down. DD1 has his proportions, but I think DD2 has mine. I'm not sure which will be happier with their final height & shape.

bedraggledmumoftwo · 09/12/2015 20:50

I'm 5ft8 and used to buy long back when II ever wore heels-now I am regular!

MrsMook · 09/12/2015 21:23

At 5ft 2, I'm averagely short with a 26 inch leg, so I can just about get away with a 27 inch pair of trousers.

High heels are of little use when your feet never made it to adult sizes. 2 inches are as high as my feet can take. 3 inches would look like skyscraper heels!

For years I thought it was my small bust not filling tops and making them too baggy or revealing, but I've realised that I've got a short décolletage so the shoulders on my clothes should be a few inches higher which is tricky to alter on most items.

meikyo · 09/12/2015 21:42

At 5ft 1" and petite frame (48kg) I really struggle to buy clothes anywhere except online these days. I didn't struggle so much 30 years ago (in my early 50s now) but average sizes have changed so much in the last couple of decades.

Buying nice, well made, properly fitted clothes is a nightmare. However, I have recently discovered Jeetly for work clothes and it is refreshing to find nice bold colours. Boden dresses and jeans also fit me and I get bits and pieces from White Stuff.
Most stuff in shops is just far too long or overfussy (Precis Petite - I'm looking at you....even at my age I think their stuff is really old fashioned and so much pink and purple...yuk). Obviously there are a lot of really tiny clothes in Topshop etc but not really suitable for me these days!!
Highlight of my year was a work related trip to Hong Hong and discovering G2000!
As PPs have said, altering length is not too bad, but factoring in shoulders, waistlines etc and it becomes expensive. I have problems with body length on some dresses and the zip ends up in an s bend!!!

meikyo · 09/12/2015 21:43

Hong Kong, not Hong Hong!

OddSocksHighHeels · 09/12/2015 21:47

meikyo I'm 5"1 and 42kg, H&M are the best option out there, the clothes actually fit!

carabos · 09/12/2015 21:51

I'm 5ft 4 and most places I need a long, especially if I want a bit of heel (only 2in, 3 at most). I only get regular if I know I will always wear them with flats. Never buy short.

Vinorosso74 · 09/12/2015 22:26

I'm 5'4" and often need short leg length of 30". Don't mind with jeans but when I was working regular length trousers were often ridiculously long. In the rare places that did 'petite' (which 5'4" is not) of course the legs were too short. Crazy. Why can't shops do the same as men's trousers. Size and length without categorising into short/regular /long/petite.
