To be annoyed that at five foot four inches tall the perfect trousers for me are 'short'

I mean I'm national bloody average. Shouldn't regular length be the right one?

At least you can find trousers to fit you though no matter what they're called! 'Tall' in most shops is 2 inches too short for me. I'm not a giant, I'm only 5 10. Why they can't make trousers in a larger range of leg lengths I don't know.

howabout · 09/12/2015 12:52

YABU

Why do you care as long as you can find a decent fit?

I wish women's trousers were labelled by inside leg and waist the same as men's.

TaliZorahVasNormandy · 09/12/2015 12:58

I have long body too. Tis hard to find tops that cover my bum.

SnozzberryMincePie · 09/12/2015 13:05

I am 5'2 but have relatively long legs. I need regular length trousers but 'petite' tops fit me much better than regular ones which usually give me far more cleavage than I want. Unfortunately these are quite hard to find.

Naicecuppatea · 09/12/2015 13:09

I am 5ft 3 and always get regular. I have a 30" inside leg. I also remember trousers being much longer in the past, when I used to get short/petite.

givemushypeasachance · 09/12/2015 13:11

It still gives me the rage that Next considered "long length" trousers to be 31 inches. That's not feckin' long! Most long length trousers are 33 or at least 32. I tried a pair on and assumed I'd picked regular length by mistake as they flapped around my ankles!

I also remember going into BHS once and asking if they had a tall section like e.g. Dorothy Perkins did or if the longer length trousers were mixed in with everything else like in M&S. The answer was that they didn't sell any longer length trousers. Hmm Way to alienate any potential customers of above average height/leg length.

I wish there were more Long Tall Sally shops around...

TaliZorahVasNormandy · 09/12/2015 13:14

Yours clothing go up to 32ins on their trousers, for the ones who are size 12 and over.

Jibberjabberjooo · 09/12/2015 13:16

I'm 5ft 2 and wear regular. I bought a pair of ankle grazer skinnies recently though and love them. I don't get shop sizing at all, makes no sense.

EvaBING · 09/12/2015 13:19

I wear heels a lot (also 5' 4"), and in that case buy regular length. To wear flats, I would need short length. I have long been convinced that I must have short legs and a long body lol.

MontyYouTerribleCunt · 09/12/2015 13:23

I'm 5'8" and long is not long enough for me in some shops. Wouldn't have thought 5'4" would be the national average tbh but maybe I'm wrong about that.

BuggersMuddle · 09/12/2015 13:25

I am 5' and have a 29" inside leg, which is admittedly long for my height. Some shops I buy regular, some short and the more expensive ones I tend to have to alter as they tend to start very long. Just like clothes sizes there doesn't seem to be much consensus over regular / short lengths though. M&S short are very short iirc.

Don't shop in petite sections either, since my shoulders didn't get the memo about petite proportions, but my friend who's 3" taller does well in them... Meh, women's clothes sizes are all over the place IMO.

chrome100 · 09/12/2015 13:45

I'm the same height but have very short legs in proportion to my torso. Perhaps you have the same thing?

helenahandbag · 09/12/2015 14:29

New Look do jeans in 30", 32", 34" and 36" so should cater to most people. They also do low, regular and high rise.

DeoGratias · 09/12/2015 15:23

5/5 or 5/4 is UK average height (and in some areas it is shorter due to immigration from some countries by the way - on my tube line they had to add hanging straps to new trains as we are all shorter than the train companies expected out here).

Models are 6 foot. It is annoying that most clothes are made for people who are much taller than most people are. I measured a dress yesterday and what was well above the model's knees would have been mid calf on me so didn't buy it.

MrsTerryPratchett · 09/12/2015 15:25

At 5 4, surely there aren't that many people that much shorter than you, but masses of much taller. It's about distribution, not 'average' height, surely. I know 6 foot women, a good 8 inches taller than you. I think I have only know one 4 foot 8 women and she had a growth disorder.

KaraokeQueenOfTheNorth · 09/12/2015 15:30

Meh, "short" trousers are still too long for me! I love being short, I'm cute Grin

noeffingidea · 09/12/2015 15:32

I think 5'4'' is the national average for women, but for younger women it's taller, so I suppose a shop that is targeted towards younger customers would see it as short.
I'm 5' 4'' but I often feel short now rather than average.
I do usually get regular in trousers though, my legs are quite long in proportion to my body.

TheSecondViola · 09/12/2015 15:32

It's short legs, not short in height!

Although 5 ft4 is fairly short.

grimbletart · 09/12/2015 15:37

I'm 5ft 5 and feel a midget when I stand behind 13 year old girls in the queue in the local newsagents. Sad

I have to buy short in M & S too to wear with flat shoes, but normal if I am wearing a heel.

What's worse for me is the fact that everything from anywhere gapes horribly at the waist. Women seems to have lost their waists. I'm obviously a throwback to the 1950s…..

LaLoose · 09/12/2015 15:50

Depending on the shop, it could be because they reckon everyone is going to wear the trousers with high heels. Drives me bonkers. And is the reason I no longer shop at Whistles. Their trousers reach down to under the soles of my feet. (I am 5ft 8in.)

badtime · 09/12/2015 15:50

I am 5'5" ish, and I am the opposite to you - long legs and short body, so I have to buy long trousers and short/petite tops if a blouse or jacket is in any way fitted (otherwise the waist will be round my hips).

It's not about your height, it's about your proportions.

CheesyWeez · 09/12/2015 15:54

I'm with Karaoke. We're cute!
At 5'0" I used to buy 'short' in M&S and I now have to buy 'extra short'. hmm.

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 09/12/2015 15:56

I am Yogi bear. Am 5 7 or 8 and regular trousers can be a bit long on me.

wonkylegs · 09/12/2015 16:00

Short trousers only have the advantage that I have to shorten them less than regular ones as they are still too long but I'm only 4'11

whois · 09/12/2015 17:37

I'm 5'9 and get regular - but then I don't wear heels.
