Living in a small village that is now essentially an island having been cut off by water, I just want to say what amazing community spirit and support I have witnessed in the last few hours! People coming together and help eachother out in the most extreme of ways, businesses opening to offer overnight shelters, emergency services working tirelessly, and strangers offering to go above and beyond to help those in need. Thank goodness we can still have some faith in humanity

Keep an eye on weather warnings too. They're only yellow but the ground is so wet that it may flood easier than normal.

funnyperson · 20/12/2015 23:47

Oh HoleIMHI feel like driving up there with the casserole and a hug. It must be terrible not really knowing whether you are going to be flooded again and needing laundry and cash. I'm glad the council has sorted out something everyone can access. Its the least they can do. There will be people who aren't insured and need the basics to survive and not get ill.
My dd still isnt home yet
Here's some more Flowers Cake Brew for you and your family and others affected

Wetoopere · 21/12/2015 07:35

There's a few of the food banks have taken over distributing clothes, toys etc but it must be awful. Some of the areas affected were poorer anyway so not got insurance. Dh said driving round Kendal is awful with all the skips & piles of furniture outside.

Dowser · 21/12/2015 15:37

Oh dear himh ! I literally don't know what to say.

Except I really, really feel for you and I still don't think you are getting enough support from the rest of the country......and the media!

They should be highlighting your plight every day until the danger is over and life is back to normal.

Wetoopere · 21/12/2015 16:11

Just seen news the Storm Eva is heading this way too. Predicted for Xmas eve

hopefully a worst case scenario

Wetoopere · 22/12/2015 07:56

traffic news now featuring flooding

TheDrsDocMartens · 22/12/2015 10:23

HIMH hope you're ok.

Flood updates for South Cumbria

holeinmyheart · 22/12/2015 20:17

I would like to say I am Ok, but I am not. On top of everything else, I have a chest infection and a bladder infection. I know it is probably due to the stress.
The loss adjuster came today and I just couldn't meet him. My DH said he was OK.

I don't like people asking me questions and then sympathising and trying to hug me. Oh noo thanks. It is rather ungrateful but not all of them are empathic. They just want to hear the gory details. I can't bear the looks of pity.

A local Borough Councillor got in touch today and she hadn't bothered to find out how many in my village were affected. Chocolate teapot person.

I called on a friend and the water came into her house so fast, that all they managed to grab was a bottle of brandy and the dogs medicine. They sat upstairs for 10 hours with no electricity. No one visited them.

On the other hand they didn't call the police either ( the absolutely only recourse in an emergency) because they didn't want to be evacuated by boat and be put up at the YMCA. They said the dog wouldn't have liked it.

I don't want to out myself by saying what I am doing at Christmas. But we will be fine.
I also found my other best UGG boot. I was worrying about its whereabouts in case it had been swept away. Yippee

RandomMess · 22/12/2015 20:21

It's just so dismal for all the people already affected by flooding and all those either flooded again or back at risk Sad Sad

Dowser · 22/12/2015 22:28

I'm not surprised you are Ill himh with all that stress. It must feel like you are under constant siege and never knowing when ' the enemy' is going to strike and the weapons you have against it are powerless. The story of your friend not being able to save anything is truly shocking! We all think we'd have time to cart valuables upstairs.

Just come in and seen the stories on the news again. Still no bloody help line though.

It's time I emailed them I think!!!! And said' what the bloody hell are you playing at? Why isn't there a crisis line to help everyone?

Makes my bloos boil!!!

I hope you are able to keep warm himh especially with a chest infection.

Wetoopere · 22/12/2015 23:06

It's no wonder himh , think most people will be struggling in your situation. You have to keep on so you do but your body is telling you to rest. Wish we could help in some way.
Your poor friend too. I have the idea that in s flood id get something safe, wouldn't expect it that fast.scary.

funnyperson · 23/12/2015 05:51

glad you found the ugg boot
hope you are on antibiotics
glad christmas is sorted

dd was meant to turn up yesterday but hasnt arrived we think she got on the train. she isnt a great communicator really.

holeinmyheart · 23/12/2015 08:33

I had a much better night last night. I did wake at three but I went back to sleep instead of lying awake.
I keep thinking ' what are we going to do? No one will buy our house ever. This is our main asset and we have worked on making it beautiful for years.
We thought we might put it in an auction.

I know people buy houses on Homes under the Hammer, without reading the legal pack and without even going into the house, but my conscience wouldn't be very easy. I couldn't hand this house on to anyone, especially someone with young children.
Our house is too big, we have 7 ruined rooms down stairs and we need to move as the two of us are rattling around it. We can't stay here into old age.

Oh and the lovely little family in the village who seem to have disappeared had to leave on the Saturday night, 5th Dec, and go and stay with her Mum. They had enough time to save the babies toys and put most of the furniture up. They have a downstairs bathroom ( as it is an ancient cottage ) and the water shot up out of the toilet. Yuck
Their dear little cottage that they have worked so hard on, is wrecked.
They seemed amazingly cheerful but I know they are crying, like me behind closed doors.

TheDrsDocMartens · 23/12/2015 09:23

Yuck, that's really grim. At least they had chance to save things.
Horrible to have your home wrecked.

Dowser · 24/12/2015 13:04

Hope you've got some respite today everyone.

funnyperson · 25/12/2015 04:08

dd turned up home at last. I'm very happy. She says Lancaster wasnt that bad apart from lots of power cuts and no heating but the house next door to the housemate's parents in Cumbria had to open the front door and the back door to let the water gushing down the hill though it without washing the house away. The ground floor is therefore ruined but the house still stands.

I expect things will look better in the spring

dd says she loves the north esp the pennines and cumbria.

Dowser · 25/12/2015 10:27

Good news funny person. Enjoy your time together.

Dowser · 25/12/2015 22:12

Wetoopere · 26/12/2015 09:07

Looking like Lancashire is going to get the worst today. Hope they're prepared.

gingerdad · 26/12/2015 09:14

Let's hope so. The worst just missing us I think.

Dowser · 26/12/2015 15:13

Okay! Okay! Can it please stop raining now!

My roof is leaking in two rooms!

I think it's come out in sympathy!

holeinmyheart · 26/12/2015 22:30

We have had the fourth severe flood warning today. God help us tonight. Please don't let us be flooded again. Feel extremely anxious.

raspberryrippleicecream · 26/12/2015 23:11

Thinking of you all. It's horrendous!

Dowser · 26/12/2015 23:17

Our news broadcast implied that the rain had stopped in Cumbria . Obviously that is not the case.

Let's hope it doesn't cause more damage.

raspberryrippleicecream · 26/12/2015 23:20

I think it's actually stopped at the moment where I live. The problem is a couple of hours later when the water comes off the hills.
