Living in a small village that is now essentially an island having been cut off by water, I just want to say what amazing community spirit and support I have witnessed in the last few hours! People coming together and help eachother out in the most extreme of ways, businesses opening to offer overnight shelters, emergency services working tirelessly, and strangers offering to go above and beyond to help those in need. Thank goodness we can still have some faith in humanity

Govt caNcelled flood defence schemes.

Oh well! That'll help!

tthisisgettingboring · 06/12/2015 23:50

I saw a lady fundraising on the TV earlier and she said that they had raised £3 million in 2009 and she was giving out a text number so that people could donate so there are people willing to raise funds.

It looks so dreadful and I feel so sorry for people and yes so close to Christmas again Sad

MaitlandGirl · 07/12/2015 04:08

We got hit by a cyclone in April this year and the damage from both wind and floodwater was horrendous.

I've been watching the news coverage coming out of the UK and it looks terrible. There will be many months of work needed after the floodwaters go down to get things back to something even vaguely resembling normal. And the smell afterwards is awful - 'flood mud' has a very specific smell that lingers for ages.

Wetoopere · 07/12/2015 06:37

There's a website set up, nothing else afaik so far, Tim Farron is pushing govt for funding. Cobra produced some army for Carlisle & Lancaster but other than local services it seems to be the volunteer teams. Luckily (!) Cumbria is a good source of water/hill rescue teams and there's more travelled in.
County is going to be a mess for some time travel wise with bridges & roads gone which will hinder rescue/clean up operation.

TheDrsDocMartens · 07/12/2015 06:47

fundraising

HesterShaw · 07/12/2015 06:50

Goodness! We went flew out to the States a couple of days ago and have just caught up with the news. Thought the flight as a bit bumpy as we passed the north of the UK.

How awful! Stay safe everyone. I can't imagine how miserable it must be to have your home flooded :( Thoughts to everyone affected.

Dowser · 07/12/2015 08:54

Yes, I saw on the news rescue teams from Cheshire.

Will click on the link thank you.

cosytoaster · 07/12/2015 09:02

We've just got our electricity back on and I'm off to find the preppers board...no way I ever want to be so ill prepared again!

indyandlara · 07/12/2015 09:06

Huge areas of the Scottish Borders are under water too. The pictures from Hawick are heartbreaking.

IJustLostTheGame · 07/12/2015 09:59

My 90 year old great aunt is in Hawick. She says she's fine but I'm still worried. Sad

Dowser · 07/12/2015 12:41

How long was it off for cosy

raspberryrippleicecream · 07/12/2015 19:15

I am lucky in that my home is OK, but I have many friends/colleagues who aren't. It is devastating, especially as its a second time.

PlummyBrummy · 07/12/2015 20:14

My family home has been flooded up to 6ft - higher than last time. There's a real blitz spirit there at the moment but some reports of looting too. Full flood defences would be nice next time thanks, David Cameron, you tw*t.

cosytoaster · 08/12/2015 07:50

Sorry for not replying Dowser, it's been on and off (but mostly off) since 10.40pm on Saturday. Back on now so fingers crossed and at least we've not been flooded, so luckier many

Dowser · 08/12/2015 10:58

I'm surprised this thread has had so little traffic. I still think if it had happened overseas/ had thousands and thousands of people involved there would be more cries of help.

Why are we so poor at helping our own?

I heard of a seriously disabled man who has been flooded out of his home for the second time looking for disabled accommodation to rent for a year!!!

When you rely on a lot of specialised equipment just to manage a normal life this is even more devastating.

I certainly hope you don't see rain like that again.

G1veMeStrength · 08/12/2015 11:10

Awful isn't it. I have relatives in the area, trouble is so much is so remote. Which is what makes it a gorgeous place to be most of the time! Much sympathy to those affected.

raspberryrippleicecream · 08/12/2015 16:52

It's raining again here, and there are serious flood alerts in Carlisle again

Dowser · 08/12/2015 16:53

Is that right you've had more rain today?

I hope not!

raspberryrippleicecream · 08/12/2015 16:59

Raining as I type, Dowser.

Wetoopere · 08/12/2015 17:17

Dowser there's another thread moving at this speed too.
I think they've just not given proper coverage.
My lecturer knew very little today and they were only in Preston.

myotherusernameisbetter · 08/12/2015 17:21

We've had tons of coverage in Scotland about the situation in Cumbria but very little about the the Borders etc. which obviously didn't impact quite so many people but it's all devastating for those involved. We've had a few locals affected too but mainly it was flooded roads etc here rather than houses.

Feel so bad for everyone.

Maybe lack of traffic is due to those effected being unable to post?

DonttouchthatLarry · 08/12/2015 17:27

Although it's a terrible situation, it's been heart warming to see all the offers of help and accommodation on the FB groups, there's a real community spirit shining through. We spend a lot of time in Keswick and have seen people and businesses we know devastated again, as they were in 2009 - we'll be back there in the New Year to support the local economy and have donated to the appeal. The original appeal target was £1 million, but I see they've now raised over half a million and have upped the target to £2 million.

StrapOnDodo · 08/12/2015 17:34

Whilst we were reopening our soggy shop today there were so many lovely people offering help, soup, cake and also loads of lovely customers who had invented an 'urgent' need for our products when I could tell they just want to support us.Smile

I am so upset for all those who have lost their homes though, especially the elderly, ill and those with children Sad

mateysmum · 08/12/2015 17:35

It was just the same here in the Somerset floods. The community spirit, organisation and endeavour were simply amazing and I know some of the community"experts" here are helping in Cumbria. Our floods were not as fast or as violent, but they hung around for months, so we got lots of practice at coping. Flooding is dreadful and many people will be out of their homes for up to a year, but the most lasting legacy has been the strengthening of the community. So some good can come out of the appalling situation we and you now find yourself in.

StrapOnDodo · 08/12/2015 17:39

Not sure if this is allowed but for anyone who wants to donate
