Living in a small village that is now essentially an island having been cut off by water, I just want to say what amazing community spirit and support I have witnessed in the last few hours! People coming together and help eachother out in the most extreme of ways, businesses opening to offer overnight shelters, emergency services working tirelessly, and strangers offering to go above and beyond to help those in need. Thank goodness we can still have some faith in humanity

According to FB Glenridding is flooding again Sad

holeinmyheart · 09/12/2015 21:24

OMG poor poor souls.

funnyperson · 09/12/2015 22:27

dd hasnt been clubbing, cant text as phone out of charge, cant study consistently as intermittent internet/electricity and is cold. trains are inconsistent and venison burgers are no good for vegetarians. anyway it feels bad to her to accept charity
media/govt give a falsely reassuring picture
rescue workers and police doing a good job and being fed by locals but students dont get thought about much
personally i think she should come home

CloakAndJagger · 09/12/2015 23:08

Are you talking about the same lancaster? It's been crap, frankly, but I suppose it depends on which bit you're living in as to what is available and what power you've had and whether your home and business has been ruined by the flood or not.

CloakAndJagger · 09/12/2015 23:13

Lancaster uni has cancelled lectures and told folks to go home. I feel for the university of Cumbria though as their students and staff have been affected by the floods in Lancaster, Carlisle and Ambleside, their three main hubs. Crap all round.

SzeliMac · 09/12/2015 23:37

In Lancaster only bailrigg uni area was without power for long enough to lose charge, town has been fine. I work in student central and none have been without power really since Monday now. There's plenty of vegan and vege food doing the rounds too. If she has no WiFi and doesn't have a data plan and doesn't want to leave the flat you could go on The Bay Radio and Electricity NWs social media and let her know which shelters and food vans are open when.

SzeliMac · 09/12/2015 23:57

Just been on national rail for you. Full service running south but with delays because of the reduced speed required north of Lancaster.

Get her on a train in the morning before the second wave hits. If she's struggling now when things are largely ok then for the sake of both of your nerves get her home before we have any more problems.

If you like you can dm me a message for her and I'll post it thru her letterbox? I'm out of the Lanc office til Sat now otherwise I'd say send her down to charge up too although she could always do that at a friend or neighbours? If she has no power it's likely to be just her house with an isolated problem and if so call ENW to get it sorted

ouryve · 10/12/2015 00:08

funny some of us northerners are actually laughing at the prepping boards and that it took some people so long to recognise what they take for granted must find the camping stove, actually

Hope today's flare up hasn't hit people too hard. We only got the nasty wind at the weekend (and the water coming downhill) - today's wind has been much the same apart from less intensive gusts, but has been so painfully cold I stayed indoors as much as I could. At least I managed not to get blown off any kerbs, today. My ankles are happy about that. It was bin day, though, so our back lane looked like a disaster of its own making.

Awww hole in my heart, I'm so very sorry to hear what you are going through.

I can hear the rain outside and wonder if you're getting it too.

Your lovely home! Just beyond sad.

This government had better step up to the plate over this.......

holeinmyheart · 10/12/2015 04:45

Omg just been woken up at 3 by another text flood warning. Oh well I can't sleep and nothing left downstairs to ruin.
We are not as badly off as some. I feel so anxious and weepy.
I know the government will not step up to the mark.
There were loss adjusters roaming around the village on Tuesday. Ambulance chasing.
Marooned in my house I had sight seekers taking pictures. I so wanted them to fall over into it.
What a nightmare. The landline is all over the place.

Wetoopere · 10/12/2015 06:48

funny which uni is she at? UCLAN is offering its library to Lancaster/Cumbria students just show the card at the entry. She could take laptop etc there to charge. I've been commuting there all week.

Wetoopere · 10/12/2015 06:50

Check the TPE /Northern website regarding trains rather than national rail though. They weren't up to date when I checked the other day, told me Lancaster had no problems with power it was totally fixed.

Dowser · 10/12/2015 09:57

How are things in the grim light of day hole in my heart? Have you got other family members with you?

I noticed that the daily mail have started a fundraising campaign

www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-3353561/Torment-goes-victims-Cumbrian-floods-river-village-cut-four-days-bursts-banks-hours-clean-operation-begins.html

It's always too little too late though. Could this have been prevented do you think or is it one of those scenarios where no matter how much money was thrown at it nature was going to be the only winner.

I can't imagine what you are going through wondering if things are going to get any better or if it's going to be more of the same.

Hoping and praying that despite the gloomy forecast it is going to get better.

Thank you for keeping us updated. Can't believe pooley bridge has been washed away. Love pooley bridge . Spent many a happy hour there and on the little jetty. We were there two or three years ago just as autumn was setting on and I had my photo taken on that jetty with the lake in the background then it was onto glenridding ,a stunning drive around the lake for afternoon tea.

I said to DH that we hadn't been to the lakes this year so we are definitely coming next year to give you a bit of support.

Drew64 · 10/12/2015 10:40

My heart goes out to those all over the country affected by the awful weather recently.

Maybe, just maybe, instead of fighting useless wars with an invisible/hard to find enemy, maybe we should invest all of the money we spend on defence on a force that can be deployed in situations like this.
If the entire world did this we could support every worldwide disaster and the world would become a better, more peaceful place to live.

Dowser · 10/12/2015 13:37

Just seen on the news . Glenridding has been flooded again . A land slip up the valley brought about this situation.

A resident has asked that people come and visit come the spring when hopefully they are back on their feet again. It's the best way to support them was the message.

funnyperson · 10/12/2015 14:10

No news from dd
She's either studying or helping with the rescue effort
szelimac I have pmed you thanks

SpangleDragon · 10/12/2015 14:31

Its really heartbreaking to see all these people flooded and especially so close to Christmas

My mum has been flooded 11 times in her house and shes now finally got some help from a government grant (at last) and may avoid flooding this year. She's down south, and NO ONE offered her any help at all..

I remember one christmas morning she flooded, and i went round and had to wade through knee deep water in my bare feet - fuck it was cold!!

HannahBulector · 10/12/2015 14:57

I'm amazed at the comment 'town has been fine' and other comments re Lancaster.
Power has been off at some shops again today. my dc's school only re-opened today.Sainsbury's has only just opened. The businesses on Chapel street are still closed and will be for some time by the looks of things, if indeed they all survive.
The Quay is still in a bad way and some of the businesses there are set to be closed for weeks.

funnyperson · 10/12/2015 15:28

hannah I'm with you on this
Do you think various govt minions are employed to stalk these sorts of thread to calm down the public and give the impression everything is hunkydory?

HannahBulector · 10/12/2015 15:41

Well I do wonder [hmmm]
The Lancaster being described here is not the Lancaster I am seeing.
People may be trying to be stoic and trying to carry on as usual but it's really not business as usual.
I feel quite saddened by the responses on this thread.
I saw someone in tears yesterday in one of the closed businesses.
Heartbreaking at any time let alone so close to Christmas.

Dowser · 10/12/2015 16:30

Well keep posting and keep getting the message out. I looked on a Facebook page and there was so little on there re updates. I couldn't understand it. Not everyone will be without power/ access etc.

Me and DH have such a fondness for the lakes. My daughter was travelling monthly to the Lakeland college that involved a two night stay for her and her family and we nearly sited our caravan at Penrith which I don't think would have survived if we had.

We missed Appleby fair this year. Just forgot all about it,so are definitely coming next year.

Dowser · 10/12/2015 16:52

www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-cumbria-35057763

The man mentioned, Michael Bonney is facing spending a year in a care home as no one will fund transport costs for his carers who don't drive. He's ventilated so has high care needs. He thinks he will have to shut his business down and live without the comfort of his specially adapted home, his wife, his pets.

Heartbreaking and yes he is insured.

lk26 · 10/12/2015 17:02

The Bonneys are friends of mine and I was there yesterday clearing their house. Such a sad situation.
Not surprised Glenridding flooded as we had so much rain yesterday.
There is so much generosity here it's great.
