To think you can still be greedy if you are slim?

Reading several of the food posts on AIBU, a common thing I come across is people who say, usually about their DH or DP, is that oh my partner needs loads of food and it doesn't matter because he is slim/thin etc.

You can still be greedy and be slim. Stuffing loads of food isn't a good thing and it doesn't make it ok just because you don't visibly look obese.

Slim people can have high levels of internal fat so may not look fat

Aye

Definition of greed does not fit with your description

Greed (Latin, avaritia), also known as avarice, cupidity, or covetousness, is the inordinate desire to possess wealth, goods, or objects of abstract value with the intention to keep it for one's self, far beyond the dictates of basic survival and comfort

Greed is greed whether it affects someone else or not

Greedy is such a horrible judgemental word and it starts from a very young age ( people talk about 'greedy babies' who take more milk than other babies the same age ffs.)

Perhaps if we stopped attaching moral judgements and guilt to food it wouldn't be such a problem. So long as someone isn't snatching a Mars bar out of your hand and eating it then frankly it's none of your god damn business if they eat that mars bar.

NeedsAMousekatool · 06/12/2015 10:29

Besides even by your own definition OP you're talking about less healthy choices not greed. If a thin person eats less than what they require to maintain weight then actually their "basic survival and comfort" is threatened.

StellaAlpina · 06/12/2015 11:15

It's a bit hard to tell unless you are the actuall person eating if someone is just greedy or has a high metabolism surely?

Also, men tend to need more food than women because they tend to be bigger than women.

DB for e.g. eats a tonne but does shift work and goes to the gym regularly, he's pretty slim but he's not greedy, he's hungry!

AyeAmarok · 06/12/2015 11:23

I read your definition the same way as mine, actually. Taking more than you need

"with the intention to keep it for one's self" to me equals selfish.

RonaldMcDonald · 06/12/2015 11:33

I am madly greedy at times ( slim)
Suppose everyone else is the same to some extent
Never really thought about it

VestalVirgin · 06/12/2015 11:48

It's a bit hard to tell unless you are the actuall person eating if someone is just greedy or has a high metabolism surely?

If the person is slim, you can assume that they either have a high metabolism, or only stuff their face when food is for free, and go hungry the rest of the time.

Therefore, the only circumstance in which you might complain about "greedy" slim people would be if you are paying for their food.

Though I think most people would rather go hungry than be rude enough to order two main dishes in a restaurant when someone else is paying, or to take a second helping when invited to someone's home for dinner, when others haven't eaten their first portion.

baublesbells · 06/12/2015 12:06

he's pretty slim but he's not greedy, he's hungry!

This is partly my point. The perception of greed seems to be judged on the size of a person.

It seems to be OK to eat huge amounts if you are slim but not if you are overweight. This is what I found having been on both ends of the spectrum

OP posts:
SaucyJack · 06/12/2015 12:10

But if you've been on both ends of the spectrum, then you're not a naturally slim person who needs to eat vast amounts of food (assuming no thyroid/yadda yadda issues) so it doesn't actually apply to you.

My DP cannot get his weight above 9 st 4 no matter how much he eats or how little exercise he does as he was exactly the same when doing a desk job.

DrHarleenFrancesQuinzel · 06/12/2015 12:33

I don't understand how it's possible to be really fit and overweight? Surely in achieving the former you'd remove the latter?

Im overweight, have been for years, but relatively fit. I could go out right now and run a 10K without really thinking too much into it. Ive ran half Marathon in the past and regularly go to the gym do exercise classes. Yet my BMI has been 27/28 for years.

JumpandScore · 06/12/2015 12:39

I think it depends what you mean by fit. If you mean strong with decent stamina then of course that's possible whilst overweight. If you mean healthy then less possible.

TeenageWildlife · 06/12/2015 13:02

What judgement! People use food in all sorts of ways for all sorts of reasons. If someone is eating large amounts of food and they are hungry -for whatever reason- having other people judge is not helpful.

MistressDeeCee · 06/12/2015 16:41

OP you sound like a food-obsessive. One of those pain in the arse people who've always got their beak in other people's plate then making disparaging comments (such as "greedy" )about what and how much they're eating, so as to make them feel bad. Maybe they've rightly told you to piss off & mind your own business (& plate) by now so internet/MN is mightily convenient for you to have a pop at people

There are enough people yapping about weight as it is..an issue on the front of every women's magazine, slimness promoted in adverts, women who seem scared to eat in front of a man in case he judges them; albeit women seem to be far more judgmental of each other & perfectly happy to shame another woman. Together with the other thread where an OP appears to be having palpitations because her DH ate 2 fillets of fish.. it seems some people's control freak tendencies can't be expressed in real life so they've landed on MN to bleat.

I actually thought you were the same poster - you sound similar enough

AyeAmarok · 06/12/2015 16:57

One of those pain in the arse people who've always got their beak in other people's plate then making disparaging comments

Yup

AyeAmarok · 06/12/2015 16:58

And MN has a lot of these.

baublesbells · 06/12/2015 17:44

Mistress

Having an opinion makes me food obsessive Hmm

Nobody better post on AIBU because you will accuse them of being an obsessive of one sort or another

OP posts:
StellaAlpina · 06/12/2015 17:57

Surely most people who work shifts (so physical work) plus go to the gym have to eat a lot of food or else they'd be pretty hungry - because manual work and exercise takes up a lot of calories. Fwiw he eats very healthily.

lastqueenofscotland · 06/12/2015 18:14

I've got an (enourmous) appetite, but I'm not greedy, I'd never eat more than my share. My portions are enourmous when I cook for myself.

I'm also slim (bmi of 20) but I run a lot, and literally can't sit still.

lljkk · 06/12/2015 20:21

Sumo wrestlers are extremely fit & obviously very overweight. They have terrific (admirable) cardiovascular numbers. People with Parader Willy syndrome have low fat around their internal organs. Skinny supermodels often have high fat around their internal organs and as a group are very unfit (fashion people don't like to see muscle). Human bodies can be very interesting.

Sorry you feel judged, but I do think some of it might be projection.
We are a family of skinny greedy pigs & everyone comments to say so. We just don't mind being called greedy. It's true, so how could we? Grin

MrsMook · 06/12/2015 21:32

Being small and slim, people tend to underestimate my appetite. My choices and portion sizes are generally sensible, and I exercise. Sometimes I'll feast, but in the big picture, it balances out. If I've had a big meal out for lunch, I'll have little appetite later. If it's not balancing out, then I'll gain weight and cease to be slim.

Slim people can eat more than their fair share.
Slim people may have additional calorie needs from high metabolisms or high levels of activity.
Slim people may be unhealthy with a poor balance of fat and muscle.

Same as anyone else!

WorraLiberty · 06/12/2015 22:45

I'm not sure about that lljkk

Sumo wrestlers have a shorter life expectancy than most other Japanese men, and they often develop diabetes, high blood pressure, and are more prone to heart attacks.

lljkk · 06/12/2015 22:54

That's fair. To correct myself, I was thinking more about Sumo-W internal fat more than the cardiovascular, although I think they still have many favourable health indicators compare to sedentary trim Japanese.

The research on their morbidity & mortality is somewhat limited. My only real point was to cite a good example of fat but very fit group.

MuttonWasAGoose · 06/12/2015 23:46

I'm slim - but nothing like I used to be. I often eat just one huge meal a day and then maybe a couple of small snacks. So, you may see me being "greedy" and eating a huge portion of food at one sitting.

I'm more likely to eat too many calories on days when I eat more, smaller meals.

MistressDeeCee · 07/12/2015 08:54

baublesbells your post is judgmental of the amount of food people eat in a particular way which is why I said what I did. You' probably make a brilliant friend for a person with emotional eating disordersHmm . Then again this is planet MN where someone actually has time and inclination to focus on whats on other people's plates, in real life I've only ever come across this once.. a lady at work who saw fit to publicly comment on what other women ate "oh didn't you already eat so & so earlier", then was highly offended when 1 woman told her to shut up

baublesbells · 08/12/2015 08:25

Mistress

If you only ever come across this once, you must be right then Hmm

You would be a brilliant friend for like nobody because you would be saying well "I haven't come across it". Fat lot of help that is Grin

Pun intended!
