To, um, cancel Christmas?

Obviously not entirely!

Just the same, I'm more broke than the Ten Commandments and I keep reading that you should never prioritise Christmas or other events over basic payments that need to be made.

So - WIBU to buy my eldest (9) a small gift (under £30) and make that it? It's about the spirit right? (PS not a begging thread.)

Rather than a £30 present, would she prefer lots of little things? Are you near a Tiger store - they have lovely bits for children for about £2. If I was nine, I would rather have 15 little presents than one big one, I think.

She definitely wants the kindle and it's the only thing she's asked for

I think at 9 years old. Your DD would appreciate it more if you went to the pound land and got her 30 gifts for £1. Rather than 1 gift for £30.
I think you're doing a great job teaching her the value of money and setting her an excellent example.

But she's asked for the kindle - she didn't want a load of pound shop stuff Sad

No, you are definitely right to get the Kindle.

Truly, OP, the things I loved most about Christmas as a child were never the presents. I remember, and loved: Christmas music on in the house, the nativity scene at our church, the special Christmas treats my mum cooked, family being around, everyone saying 'Merry Christmas!', and having lunch at a decorated table. Things that created atmosphere.

Our cousins always got a ridiculous amount of tat from 'Father Christmas' and we only ever got one biggish gift and perhaps a bag of chocolate coins and some new pencils or a notebook. I never cared one bit about the discrepancy in gifts. And my mum and dad would not have even contemplated going into debt over Christmas. Shock

Merry Christmas to you and yours. Your DD will be thrilled with her Kindle, I have no doubt. You sound like a brilliant mum. CakeXmas Smile

No, but I honestly don't want one Smile I don't really have anybody else to buy for.
