To want to buy a Kindle Fire now it's reduced to £35?

Is it silly? What would I do with it, given that I've already got one? But it's so cheap....

Thanks Prof and Bond I definitely need it more as a Kindle and not a tablet so will save up for the Paperwhite.

DontOpenDeadInside · 29/11/2015 12:58

The one without the ads are £45 i think. I don't think the kids version has them on either. I went to argos afer reserving them, expecting it to be heaving (was going to go for delivery but website kept crashing) on Black Friday, but it was almost empty. Staff standing round with nothing to do.

I was given one and can't get the bloody thing to read the books I already have or even let me use my favourite internet site.

JustAnotherYellowBelly · 29/11/2015 13:14

Could someone explain about the advert thing please?
DP uses my iPad to watch stuff off the internet so I was thinking of getting him his own tablet - would this be a good tablet for him?

Good choice! If you just want to read books then you can't beat the Paperwhite. It's been designed specifically for reading and the battery lasts a couple of weeks, unlike any sort of tablet.

With my current Kindle, which I have used pretty much solely as a tablet rather than a reading device (though perfectly serviceable for reading),the adverts on the sleep screen don't bother me at all, as I simply click past them to wake it up. I can't remember adverts elsewhere....but I've not used it for a while. I found it invaluable to carry about with me and use wherever there was a wifi connection to use the internet.

I've ordered one from Amazon now. Yes, I have to wait but I'm in no rush. And I feel more confident with Amazon's return policy if anything is amiss. I've found Argos can be a tad iffy at times when it comes to returns.

JustAnother - it could well be useful for your DP for watching internet stuff, though I don't know how big your ipad is? From what I've read, the screen on this version is acceptable. I know the screen on my current Kindle is (in my opinion) very good when watching TV programmes.

I just got one for DH. Thanks MN!

Cancelled Amazon, bought from Currys. Here within 5 days - this thread was fantastic.

ingeniousidiot · 29/11/2015 15:45

If you buy from Curry's you can get a further 10% cashback from quidco.

Oldisthenewblack · 29/11/2015 15:46

Ooh, this is all very exciting! (I don't get out much). Those of you who've ordered one, or received one, could you let the rest of us know what it's like when you use it? Though I suppose if many of them are for Christmas presents we may have a while to wait.....

Thank you!
Just nipped to Argos and bought one for him... I forgot a bag though so had to hide it up my coat (he gave me a lift)

If you do buy it, get this app/game called Monument Valley, it is amazing, the graphics and designs are very cool.

It's a puzzle game, where you have to move this character through different structures to get a jewel or crystal. Each level has a different structure and you can take a screen shot once you have cleared the level.
I've already gotten onto level 11, and it is free! Grin

I ended up watching something from i-player last night on the kindle, the quality was good, didn't lag.
Haven't got round to transferring e-books on my laptop to the kindle yet, but I do that later this week.

The adverts are unobtrusive, just swipe across and they are gone. There is a page on the home-screen which shows the amazon products, what you have bought in the past and recommendations. Again, just swipe across to what page you need, I don't want to buy anything at the moment so I just ignore it.

Costacoffeeplease · 29/11/2015 17:40

I got one last week - I think it's great for the price, got one for my dad for Christmas and will probably get another for my husband - even though we both have iPhones and iPads.

PrincessHairyMclary · 29/11/2015 18:19

If you don't like the adverts just put it in kids mode and allow the apps you want to use and it'll stop any inadvertant app purchases too. It's easy to switch between the two.
