not to want to get my hands dirty putting petrol in?

In the olden days, I used to drive my car into the petrol station and someone would come out, fill her up and wipe the windscreen. Plus if I said I was going on a long journey they would check my tyre pressure and water etc.

I would like to do this now, but it appears not to be an option anymore. I would pay a few extra on the gallon obviously, as I pay for many other services in life.

Am I alone in this?

Stuff like ironing and DIY/decorating is time consuming. Filling your car with petrol takes minutes.

I get the Oven clean people in because I CBA to spend hours cleaning the oven.

BarbaraofSeville · 23/11/2015 21:34

Let's not forget that not everyone is mobile enough to pump their own fuel. Having someone do it for them might help them out a little and help them retain independence.

Idefix · 23/11/2015 21:37

Still get this with shell in Germany, I love it especially now it is getting chilly Smile. I just tip when I pay.

BoomBoomsCousin · 23/11/2015 21:37

Why would you take the kids out of the car when you fill up with petrol?

chitofftheshovel · 23/11/2015 21:39

My local petrol station offers this if one of the guys is free. It's always a bit if a race to get my hands on the pump before they get out. Yes it's more expensive than supermarkets but it is also of higher quality.

HicDraconis · 23/11/2015 21:39

I would love someone to peel me a grape and pass it to me 😊 Or just pass it unpeeled, would save me having to drag my lazy arse off the sofa.

JapaneseSlipper · 23/11/2015 21:49

"Putting petrol in is part of car ownership, no I wouldn't be willing to pay more for someone to do such a simple task for me."

Doesn't have to be though. As the OP says, it's perfectly possible to know how to do something without wanting to do it all the time. And once upon a time it was considered acceptable - in fact, normal - for someone else to perform this service for us.

Seems pretty reasonable to me. If I could just drive up and have the car filled up without having to get out, I'd do it. Agree about the tyre pressure etc as well.

Regarding the "feeble and reliant" comment - people really do get worked up about women and driving, don't they? It's pretty tiresome.

OP, YANBU, and you sound perfectly self-assured and capable. I do know of one filling station in Painswick that's still in the old style! (Hardly ever open though)

ingeniousidiot · 23/11/2015 21:51

I'm with you OP - I didn't even have to leave the car as we had an account and it was just written in the book and billed at the end of the month. I like shops with service too, so you don't have to aimlessly wander around looking for stuff.

JapaneseSlipper · 23/11/2015 21:53

"Why would you take the kids out of the car when you fill up with petrol?"

You wouldn't. That's the point. If you have to get out of the car and pay inside, because there are no attendants on the forecourt, you have to leave your children unattended in the car.

The OP's point is that it would be preferable for the whole family to remain in the car and pay someone through the window, then carry on.

BIWI · 23/11/2015 21:56

I miss the days when you used to get this kind of service. Not just filling the car with petrol, but washing the windscreen, checking your tyres, the water in the washer bottles and the oil.

Checking tyres and oil, washer bottles can all get your hands dirty, apart from the fact that they're boring things to do!

BoomBoomsCousin · 23/11/2015 22:09

I just don't see the kids thing as an issue either way (barring unusual circumstances) Japanese. You don't have to take your kids out of the car in either situation, so why are people mentioning it?

TPel · 23/11/2015 22:12

The small independent petrol station/workshop in the next village to me, fills your car. They are lovely and I use them as much as I can. I would rather support our independent traders than multinationals.

OP, YANBU! I've been putting gas in my car for a very long time. However, I don't like to have to do it either. Being able-bodied, resilient and resourceful has nothing to do with it -- and neither does wearing gloves. Very often one is standing in a bit of spilled gasoline or gasoline overflows from the end of the pump. It's very easy to get a bit on shoes and/or clothes, and the pumps that have to be dealt with aren't the most pristine. Having to refuel on a long trip, especially when dressed nicely, is not pleasant. (I certainly can't understand what this has to do with feminist issues. I can change a tire if I have to, but I don't particularly like to and don't have to do it every few hours when traveling.)

2rebecca · 23/11/2015 22:18

This has never bothered me and I don't get how so many people get filthy just putting petrol in a car, maybe it's the design of mine but I don't have to touch anything dirty to do this.
If I'm checking the oil or tyre pressure then I wear gloves which I keep in the car.

Sallystyle · 23/11/2015 22:30

I have never once got petrol on my hands. Am I doing it wrong?

TondelayaDellaVentamiglia · 23/11/2015 22:36

I can fill a car as well as the next man/woman/responsible person of legal age to use a petrol pump

I can and have changed a tyre

I just choose not to. I'd love someone to come add fill the car for me, and so would dh, he is sick of losing at Petrol Bingo.

Gladysandtheflathamsandwich · 23/11/2015 23:40

I can fill my car up, change a tyre, clean the windscreen, check the tyres and oil.

Would I pay a wee bit more for someone to fill it up for me, check the tyres/oil etc?

Hell yeah! Would have a been a real boon when I had severe SPD and it took me longer to walk to pay than it did to full up a massive MPV!

ilovesooty · 23/11/2015 23:53

A colleague of mine once came to work cross after an argument with his wife.

"RIGHT. I just won't put the petrol in her car! "

Apparently she never did it herself in case she broke a fingernail.

LizardBreath · 24/11/2015 00:05

Op! Place by me still does this, I'm in w.midds! I agree with you, many people would pay a premium for this.

CanadianJohn · 24/11/2015 00:15

Our local service station has pumps for "self-serve" and "full serve" - the full serve pumps are more expensive. I don't know if they check the oil on request - they might.

AndNowItsSeven · 24/11/2015 00:15

nothruroad just ask inside the petrol station , every one will fill your car if you have a disability.

Iloveadrianmole · 24/11/2015 00:17

We have more than one garage that does this where I live (not UK) but I don't use it as the petrol is more expensive than the local self service petrol station.

TheCraicDealer · 24/11/2015 00:19

I would avoid somewhere like this like the plague. It annoys me having to wait on people who go inside to pay never mind potentially having to queue behind someone getting "the works" whilst also having a little distracting chat with the attendant, then having the normal internal battle re. tip before driving away. No. No no no.

I like the garages where there's no people. You just pull up, put in card, fuel up, drive away. Everyone knows the score, there's no-one going back into the car to look for their club card vouchers, then doing a mini shop and deciding which scratch card to get before coming out and moving before I can pull in.

MinesAPintOfTea · 24/11/2015 05:28

One in rufford, Lancs ffor you

crazycanuck · 24/11/2015 05:49

Where are these serviced forecourts in Canada? I'm out west and all the ones I've used are self-serve pay at the pump.
