not to want to get my hands dirty putting petrol in?

In the olden days, I used to drive my car into the petrol station and someone would come out, fill her up and wipe the windscreen. Plus if I said I was going on a long journey they would check my tyre pressure and water etc.

I would like to do this now, but it appears not to be an option anymore. I would pay a few extra on the gallon obviously, as I pay for many other services in life.

Am I alone in this?

Talking of diy. I have a gardener, an elderly chap. The last time he was here he offered me some marijuana
I know this is off topic but it just reminded me of this

cecinestpasunepipe · 23/11/2015 20:38

I am more than happy to put petrol in my car at the gas station, and never get my hands dirty when I do so. I check and replenish oil, windscreen water etc at home.My big problem is checking tyre pressure, and putting air in, as I am getting on a bit, and find it hard kneeling down and getting up. I often wonder what do people with disabilities do to check and inflate their tyres? I have to ask my son-in-law to do it for me, but not everyone would be so lucky as to have someone to do it for them.

SurlyCue · 23/11/2015 20:38

I personally have no objection to this as long as the increased fee was passed onto the person doing the filling up. It wont happen though.

mumthemovie · 23/11/2015 20:39

I am not feeble or reliant and fortunately a cursory glance at my life would show this with enough clarity to make waving a pump in the air to prove it quite unnecessary.

Maybe you have identified a gap in the market and you should consider a new business venture OP.

mumthemovie · 23/11/2015 20:41

Sparkling how feeble of you! I feel sorry for your woman-maintained radiators Sad

Buy an electric car?

Won't ever have to put petrol in.

Sparklingbrook · 23/11/2015 20:42

My Mum painted the radiators in this house. She's good at gloss. I do emulsion only.

Owllady · 23/11/2015 20:43

So does no one want any marijuana?

Raxacoricofallapatorius · 23/11/2015 20:44

I don't think I've ever got dirty filling up my car with fuel.

Am I doing it wrong?

specialsubject · 23/11/2015 20:45

I've never got mucky putting petrol in a car. Why would that happen?

tyre pressures need to be checked when cold, so no point doing it after driving to the garage.

although the point about disability is entirely valid and i don't have an answer.

FishOn · 23/11/2015 20:46

Quite common still here in Canada to see 'full service' petrol stations. Nice when it's -25 not to have to get out of the car.

They will check your oil and clean your windscreen. You have to do your own tire pressures tho Grin

mumthemovie · 23/11/2015 20:47

Yanbu, op.
It totally pisses me off when I get hold of the handle of the pump and it's covered with greasy diesel.

Sparklingbrook · 23/11/2015 20:51

Where are all these grubby petrol pumps? Confused Just use the gloves provided.

Owllady · 23/11/2015 20:51

Cecine, if you have a motability car slow fit will check your tyres and refill them for you. That's only if you have a motability car though, obviously

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeG0es · 23/11/2015 20:54

No thanks from me, I'm quite happy doing my own and getting petrol on my hands doesn't seem to happen.

Nandocushion · 23/11/2015 20:54

As Fish said, full-service petrol pumps are still available in Canada and the US, and yes, you do pay more per gallon/litre for it. So all you have to do is emigrate, OP.

LaurieFairyCake · 23/11/2015 20:54

Yeah, I can no longer bend down easily to check the tyres.

I would happily pay extra for someone to do this.

I'm not a previous snowflake either Hmm just got a fucked back and hips

ClashOfUsernames · 23/11/2015 20:56

How do your hand get dirty putting in petrol?

And checking the tires is easy, even for me and I am useless at stuff like that!

HarrietSchulenberg · 23/11/2015 20:56

Our local garage used to be run by a man who "filled 'er up" for you (25 years ago). He seemed to be dexterously challenged as when you asked for a fiver of four star he used to overshoot then say, "Sorry love, it's a bit over. That'll be £8.47". You always had to ask for less than you actually wanted.
He looked like Benny Hill. I quite miss him.

Owllady · 23/11/2015 20:56

Laurie, do you not have a local car mot centre place? I'm sure they'd check for you

cardibach · 23/11/2015 20:57

I can do petrol, tyre pressures, oil check and gloss painting. Neither want nor need to do wallpaper.
I never get dirty doing petrol, although my car is filthy so it can be a hazard. Tyre pressures are best done cold, but most people do them at the petrol station - it doesn't invalidate the whole process that you drive there first.

UnGoogleable · 23/11/2015 20:57

I used to work with a guy from the Philippines - one day he was driving the work car when it needed petrol. When we got to the petrol station, it transpired that he had no idea how to put petrol in the car because apparently in the Philippines all petrol stations had service people to do it for you.

It was quite cute, teaching him how to operate a 'self serve fuel station'. He was quite flabbergasted that in our supposedly civilized country we expected people to do it themselves. He has a point!
