WIBU to stage a bra intervention in the changing room at M&S? (lighthearted!)

DM was trying things on and in the next door cubicle a woman was having a bra fitting.

Bra fitter tells her (loud enough to hear without me earwigging) she'll go and get her some 36Ds to try on. Also couldn't help but hear she was telling her to put it on the tightest hook, which is also completely wrong for a new bra.

I'd seen her go into the cubicle and she was very slim and probably no more than a 30 round her back.

I ummed and ahhed about saying something when she left the cubicle. Both DM and I used to wear completely the wrong size bra until I found out how to measure properly. DM went from a 38D to a 32C and I went from a 38B to 34D and the difference is amazing.

So when bra lady left the cubicle, she gave me a smile so I jumped in.

Felt slightly embarrassed as I gushed about measuring yourself properly, how the M&S method is wrong etc and she was really interested and didn't look at me like I was odd Grin

I pointed out to her that I wear a 34D and I'm a size 16 and relatively small chested so no way was she a 36D. Really hope she gets a decent bra. She said she was off to get a tape measure Grin

I did do it out of earshot of the bra fitter!

M&S insisted I was a 46A Hmm when I went to them wearing a 42DD having lost weight. I left with a perfectly-fitting (self-fitted by trial and error, I was not sorry that they had to return a zillion bras to the shelf) 38F.

InSpaceNooneCanHearYouScream · 22/11/2015 21:04

Ooh thanks married that's a good tip- I'll look out for wider wires

nickelbabe · 22/11/2015 21:05

YWNBU

M&s are fucking diabolical at bra fitting.

thunderbird69 · 22/11/2015 21:11

I was told in M&S that they had no bras that would fit me - made me feel like a bit of a freak!
I've never managed to get a bra that I feel comfortable in. I wear a 36, but following the instructions in that link I should be a 34. I don't understand how that would fit as even a 36 is a tight fit on the loosest fitting. Confused

KatharinaRosalie · 22/11/2015 21:11

I was really tempted to do the same in Mothercare, when a junior saleswoman was asking the 'expert' fitter for advice, and she said that if the customer in question measures 31 under boob, she should try size 36..

VestalVirgin · 22/11/2015 21:14

I now feel a strong desire to write a superhero comic about Bra-Woman, the superhero who rescues women from ill-fitting bras.

Sadly, I can't draw.

As I don't need and don't wear a bra myself, I can contribute nothing useful to the debate, except I don't think you were being unreasonable.

If the using the loosest hook is to avoid having to buy a new bra soon, there might actually be a conspiracy of the salespeople - if you have to buy more, they will earn more! Hmm

nickelbabe · 22/11/2015 21:14

I was "measured" by one in my late teens.
I wasn't wearing a bra because at that point I didn't really, and I wanted it to be accurate. Woman lifted my top to measure, saw I wasn't wearing a bra, dropped my top.like it was on fire and told me that because my top was thin fabric it would be okay to measure on top.
Sorry, but if you're embarrassed to see boobies then you should not be fittjng bras.
Then she couldn't find a bra in a 32c so told me that 34b was exactly the same size.
Thankfully I knew she was talking shit, but was shy enough to buy one of her 34bs, which I then spend months not being able to wear because it fitted sooooo badly and ended up buying another one from jessop's (john lewis) that felt amazing on. (And was fitted properly by someone who knew what she was doing )

Pythonesque · 22/11/2015 21:15

I remember years ago going for new bras some time after I stopped feeding my eldest. She was probably nearly 2 by that time. I was duly measured and they told me, with a straight face, that I needed a 37 AA, and directed me to the teenagers section where actually there weren't any AAs larger than 34 anyhow.

Ughnotagain · 22/11/2015 21:21

M&S are usually shit so YANBU.

I keep trying to broach an intervention with my mum. She insists she's a 34B and is definitely no bigger in back than me. And I just bought a 28FF (though normally 30F), soooo...

Feefifofam · 22/11/2015 21:22

I've emailed M&S about it but I'm not expecting them to do anything tbh.

How do they get away with being so crap at it?

Can someone link me to how to measure myself?

I was measured in mothercare and it's completely wrong!

ArriettyMatilda · 22/11/2015 21:28

This is a revelation, can somebody enlighten me how I should be measured?

KatharinaRosalie · 22/11/2015 21:30

Ugh I physically put my own size 30 bra on a friend once to show that it fastened even over her clothes and she did not need a 38..

SorrelForbes · 22/11/2015 21:36

Try this guide chumbler and ArriettyMatilda

Kacie123 · 22/11/2015 21:58

Another one mismeasure me. Bloody M&S had me in a 36c for a while, then a 34dd for years. Went to John Lewis and bravissimo last year for measuring - both came out with 30ff, it was a revelation!

Damselindestress · 22/11/2015 21:58

YANBU! I haven't been there for a fitting since the assistant tried to persuade me I was a certain size even though I had told her the bra I tried on in that size felt far too tight! I'm sure she was thinking about making the sale rather than making sure I was comfortable. I went to John Lewis instead and was fitted for a larger size no problem because they actually listened.

Kacie123 · 22/11/2015 21:58

*mismeasured, not mismeasure me

theycallmemellojello · 22/11/2015 22:01

Regardless of whether this lady reacted well, I think it is really horrible to go up to a random stranger, let her know you've been listening in to her private bra fitting and let her know your thoughts on her underwear choices.

Kacie123 · 22/11/2015 22:05

What? No it's not!

Kacie123 · 22/11/2015 22:06

Since when was talking to people and offering advice a bad thing?

Imagine if someone was about to spend £100 on something and you KNEW it was £10 on Amazon. Wouldn't you say that? I would!

Smurfingreat · 22/11/2015 22:55

I think both theycall and Kacie both have a point. If someone appears to be happy with the advice, I'd leave it despite believing I know better. If someone is distressed due to being told they are a "funny size", "difficult to fit" or other such shite, then I might gently venture a comment to see if they were receptive and if I might be able to help.

UntilTheCowsComeHome · 23/11/2015 00:00

I was fitted in M&S last week.

The lady asked me what back size I was currently wearing. She looked shocked when I said 34. She said I measured at 36 to 38.

I told her I'd been wearing 34D but thought they were too small so had recently tried a DD but didn't think that fitted right either. She pulled a face and said "well you're measuring at 34D, I'll bring you some to try"

Obviously they didn't fit but she seemed very surprised. She kept shaking her head at my "bizarre" measurements.

I finally had 2 bras that fit well. A 34E and a 32F. Although the lady felt sure they were too tight across the back as they were on the last hook. Hmm

It was worth being measured there just to have someone bring me bras to try, but I knew to take their advice with a pinch of salt.

JaceLancs · 23/11/2015 00:09

I don't get how some much bigger sizes wear much smaller bras than me!
I'm a size 14-16, and measured by bra intervention methods am a 38E/F
My under bust measurement is 37, but 36F feel uncomfortable so generally find a 38E best
I do find Bras difficult to find in this size though as a lot of ranges seem to stop a D or DD and the bigger bust ranges although they claim to start from DD often only have the bigger cup sizes in stock
Shape is also an issue, full cup or balcony styles do not suit the shape of my breasts, and the lower cut or plunge styles often don't go up to E
Any suggestions? I dream of finding the perfect white t shirt style bra in my size in stock - I'd buy at least 4!
Bravissimo couldn't help on my last visit - could only find me nude or black offerings
