to ask how much you are planning to spend on Xmas gifts?

Not a goady/judgey thread at all, just keen to set myself a budget so I don't go crazy this year again Grin

I'm wondering how much people generally budget to spend on gifts in total (so friends, family etc. not just children)
Is anyone else anal enough to set a budget per category? i'm so sad eg. £10 for aunts/uncles £20 per friend etc etc.

(to balance out the sheer nosiness of this thread, please see left for a picture of a grumpy Christmas cat)

to ask how much you are planning to spend on Xmas gifts?

As little as possible. I'm not a Scrooge, I love Christmas, but most people I buy for don't really want or need anything so it's just a token. Up to £20 for family, about £10 for a couple of friends. DD gets about £60 on stocking stuff and probs about £60-£100 on 'big' present. She's 19.

mrsjanedoe · 21/11/2015 19:58

I don't spend that much, presents something like:

kids £150 to £200 each
hubby same
nephews and siblings £40 to £50
parents £100
Friends: only if we see them

Wrapping paper and cards, bought cheap from Aldi or the card factory
Food is a mixte between Aldi/ Waitrose/ M&S / local farm shop

What I do find more and more expensive are Christmas trees, £100 + for an average size one sounds a lot (but kids would hate me if we don't get one)

CombineBananaFister · 21/11/2015 20:03

This year as been a real eye-opener for us as we've had a stinker of a year and some things have changed the whole tone of how we think about it . I've been ill and the treatment wiped me out for a bit (my work was fab with full sick pay but DH gets zero when he needs to look after DS when I was too sick)
My brother finally adopted two boys Grin he'd been trying to for 3years and that swells us to x10 nieces and nephews Grin I couldn't be happier but I couldn't be skinter hah!!
Ds has got £30 (but spoiled by GPs), nieces and nephews £2,50(but reduced from a tenner) and no adult gifts. Am in the process of turning a secondhand bookshelf into a superhero den and it looks AMAZING!! actually feel pretty good this year when I thought it would be poo. It's all relative!!!

Fooshufflewickbannanapants · 21/11/2015 20:14

25/30 per child (though only 10 on our 2 year old as found a bargain ) 30/35 on husband 20 on niece/siblings/parents so roughly 250 give or take plus food which is around 50.
I love love love Christmas and we have a great time bargain hunting and making gifts.

CombineBananaFister · 21/11/2015 20:18

There's a thread atm about competitive thriftyness being a bugbear with regards to xmas pressies but surely if it's through necessity it can't be helped and is NOT smug. Each to their own, I say.

Runningupthathill82 · 21/11/2015 20:18

Around £100 total as we're absolutely broke - and that will push us into more debt.
£15 on DS, nothing for DH (we can't afford to buy for each other, so don't), nothing for friends (agreed not to as I was always embarrassed about receiving lovely things and not being able to reciprocate).
Then £10 to £15 each on our parents and siblings.
Christmas is hard, and even harder when I read these threads and feel inadequate. Still, it's an increase on last year, we spent £7 on DS then. We're very lucky indeed that he's spoiled by his grandparents!

Still, we always have a fantastic Christmas together and it really isn't about "stuff" - though I know that will be harder when DS is older.

JaceLancs · 21/11/2015 20:24

Between £500 and £600 in total
DP DS and DD get up to £150 each
My friends and I don't buy for each other
Related adults just get token presents or joint or family presents
We just buy for any children

Bluecheese22 · 21/11/2015 21:18

£300 on dp
£100 on mum
£30 each on dad, step dad, sis, bil & 2 nephews

Mandzi34 · 21/11/2015 21:24

£100 - £150 on DC's
£15-£20 on Nephews
£30 - £50 on DH
£30 - £50 on DM
£10 - £15 Dm's bf

urbanwildness · 21/11/2015 21:31

£200 on DH, £200 on DS, £30ish each on siblings/nieces/nephews/parents (adds up to £300), £40 total on teachers/neighbours/friends.

Total £740. Not bad I think but I also have 4 family birthdays in December and January!

FindoGask · 21/11/2015 21:31

"This is reassuring, I seem to be middling with the amount I have in my mind to spend."

This is going to sound rude, but what does it matter what everyone else is doing? You've bought presents for your family every year until now presumably without conducting an internet survey first - what would you usually have done? I don't get why it matters what other people do. Surely it only matters what you and your family do.

Madeyemoodysmum · 21/11/2015 21:50

£100-£150 on children x2
£80 husband
£50 parents but they both have birthdays then so includes that money
£20-£25 nephews x3
£5 DB and sil each
We agreed ages ago to only buy for kids
Dh buys for his side but about £60 on his mum and £30 on sister token gift of beer for her partner
£30 on uncle.

BrandNewAndImproved · 21/11/2015 21:58

This year I've scaled back the budget a lot.

150 dd
150 ds

30 for dm and stepdad as they are having a shared present. I'll also contribute thatchers and a pudding for Xmas day.
20 quid on my db
A tenner for a token present for my sister
20 on my amazing dnan. I would spend more but she wouldn't appreciate it.
A tenner between my auntie and her husband plus a decent bottle of wine

Last year I spent over a grand just on the dc let alone the rest. This year they don't need a lot and are still wearing clothes and playing with the stuff they got last year.

sweetsomethings · 21/11/2015 22:49

DS £1000- £1200
DH £50
DM AND DF £50
£20 for neices and nephews x10
£20 friends children x6
£20 teacher present

seasidesally · 21/11/2015 22:55

sweet wow what is your dc getting?

JustBeingJuliet · 21/11/2015 23:01

I'm only buying for ds (9) this year as I'm off work with a bad back and getting no sick pay. I've explained to family and they understand. Spent about £100 in total on ds; bought a couple of bits a few months ago before my back went. God only knows what I'm going to do for his birthday in March if my back doesn't sort itself out before then, as living on a £12 a week food budget now!

AnthonyBlanche · 21/11/2015 23:03

Probably about £1000 to £1500 in total. I've only bought main present for one person so far and a have another 5 to go, though I have bought a few bits and pieces for friends / stocking fillers too.

A ridiculous amount when I see it written down, could have a weeks holiday for the same amount. Perhaps I should spend more carefully....

MissMoo22 · 21/11/2015 23:05

DS's (9 and 13) around £400 each (not including new clothes, shoes, PJs etc)
DD (14 months) £100 (and probably twice as much in clothes, shoes etc because I am addicted to buying her clothes and as my DS is having a girl next year I know I can pass them on so feel no more guilt :D )
DP £100
Parents £20 each
Godchildren £20 each
Friends £15 each
Siblings £15 each

To be honest it's all too much but I am a sucker for Christmas and my kids don't ask for lots through the year.

HighwayDragon1 · 21/11/2015 23:10

About 1,000 in total on gifts. 700 of it on dd

ohtheholidays · 21/11/2015 23:25

Probably between £3,000 and £3,500.

That's for 5DC,DH,Dad,Mum,Big brother,12 great newphews and great nieces(big brothers grandchildren)2 nephews who haven't had children yet(big brothers sons)my 3 Aunties and Uncles,MIL and FIl,DH's Auntie and Uncle,DH's Nan,Best friend and her OH,other close friends and they're children(so 4 more)our 8 pets,Dad and Mum's Dog,Big brothers Dog,MIL's cats(about 6)she rescues cats,14 Teachers,TA's and Heads of schools,2 lots of school receptionsits,presents for DC friends so about another 60 small presents.
Presents for 2 of oldest DS friends(they're Mum is an arse who doesn't give a shit about them so we've stepped in)oldest one just turned 18 and lives on his own so we'll do him a nice hamper(it'll hopefully keep him going for a month)get some pressies to open and top up his gas and electric for him,his younger brother(still living at home) we'll wrap up some presents for.

Gifts and food to the local food bank and presents for local charitys that help out familys that are struggling and others to the charitys that help those that are homeless or alone.

Busyworkingmum71 · 21/11/2015 23:43

Probably about £1500 on gifts, food/catering extra £250.

Dc x4 £300 each, to include pres from each dc to each dc.
Dh £100
Dm, pil x2, dbro £50 each (pres from us, and 1 from each of the dc to each of dm/pil/db ~£10 per pres)

Don't do pres for friends etc as it just runs out if control.

banff82 · 21/11/2015 23:53

We don't have any DCs. I don't set fixed budgets and if I see something I want to get for someone I'll just buy it (within reason, I'm not talking cars and Rolexes!). Based on previous years I think it'll end up roughly as...
About £250 on DP
£150-200 on Mum
£100ish on Stepdad
£20 on Gran (just a token gift, Mum buys her a main family present from all of us)
£20 on DP's DM
£20 each on the dogs (x2)
£10 each on my friend's 2 DC
£10 work Secret Santa
£10 friends Secret Santa

I tend to go a bit overboard with DM and DStepdad but I'm an only child and they are ridiculously generous to me. We have quite a big family but I don't buy for all my aunts, uncles, cousins etc. My main group of friends has been doing a Secret Santa since we were at uni or we'd all be broke trying to buy for everyone.

sweetsomethings · 22/11/2015 00:01

Seaside Sally he is getting a gaming desktop so will last years and years

Pobspits · 22/11/2015 00:04

We budget per person....it's difficult to work out exactly because we have so many birthdays around xmas and it all gets lumped together but I reckon about £850 on our own kids, lots of nieces and nephews and 2 close friends kids. Then about £100 total on our parents, £20 on 2 aunties, £25 on close friend and £20 on one sibling. Probably about £150 between Dh and I so almost £1200?

SingingSamosa · 22/11/2015 00:08

I spend:

£25 on each of my nieces and nephew
£40 on my sister and her husband (between them as usually get a joint present)
About £100 on my husband
£30 ish each on my mum and MIL
£10 each on some close family friends (who are quite hard up and feel very uncomfortable if I spend more)

I have no idea what I spend on the children (7, 6, 4) as I just keep a list of presents for everyone in an open document on my laptop. When someone (anyone who I buy for) mentions something they'd like, I add it to the list and when I buy it (often on offer) then I highlight it in red. I probably don't spend an equal amount on the children as they are all still fairly young and at that age it's all about the quantity not cost (as they are mostly from Santa!) so I just make sure that they all have the same number. The younger children still like a lot of tat and so they don't have the same amount spent on them as the eldest - who is starting to appreciate more quality things.
I don't tend to go in for all the electronic things that kids seem to all get these days and so the things I buy for them tend to be books, games, outdoor toys, arts and craft stuff etc. So I don't buy mega expensive things but I expect they add up. I buy them about 10-12 presents each.
