I am no expert but surely simply bombing Syria is not going to reduce the likelihood of terrors attacks in the UK?

Also, why not remove those who have travelled to Syria to fight with IS from the UK? Would this even be possible?

Ipity and Thyme Being in an even less mentally balanced state than usual, I'm having to resist the strong temptation to write out the long essay in response to your interesting posts, that's writing itself inside my overheated brainpan at this moment ... another time, perhaps.

so what is the solution that Jerry puts forward

ISIS have gained power, financial support way beyond what anyone predicted was possible. a year ago we could not have predicted the changes that have happened

we have to take action we can't let fear of past mistakes hold us back how they have gained so much power is something that governments are struggling to understand and what we really have to do is stop the funding, once ISIS is crushed money will go elsewhere and another group will gain power and much of that money comes from Saudi our friends in the middle east

totally agree the IRA and ISIS can not be compared ISIS objection is to kill every shia muslim, lapse sunni mulsim and every non muslim (though some have been given the option to convert) and create a state under sharia law that state is not a country it is whatever land they capture and now they are attacking Europe through terrorist acts. They sell girls and virgin women as sex slaves, raping a child or woman is acceptable if they are not strict sunni muslims, killing is acceptable if not strict sunni muslims and recently they killed a number of women over 40 are they are not needed how can we have turned a blind eye to this and not acted before

Batshit - I'm glad you spared me having to read a long polemic on Syria by someone who's clearly never been there and doesn't know anyone there currently. Thank you.

I was for bombing but the more I read about it the more I wonder if we couldn't contribute in another way.

There are lots of countries bombing already.

I think us bombing is more of a sign, a beacon, that we can and will. I wonder if its more a sign to Asssad and Russia than ISIS.

We could end up fighting russia and assad and ISIS.

I dont trust Putin and I think he is deliberately moving his armory into place for something other than fighting ISIS.

Praise be for him - really

How rude! Still ~ I shall rise above it. This is soooo time consuming...

MyFavouriteClintonisGeorge · 26/11/2015 18:08

Still don't know what the bombing is for.

It will not in itself dislodge ISIS. ISIS has changed tack in response to the current bombing with the result that there are few targets to hit these days.

The next step is a renewed push on the ground but no one wants to provide soldiers for that.

Plus, hardly anyone agrees on what the ultimate outcome should be. We can't even say the end goal is to get rid of Assad, because Russia will not countenance that.

DrasticAction · 26/11/2015 20:01

I think kurds are getting near Mosul the idea will be to bomb and assist them while they go in on the ground and also cut off racca and mosul.
