To think this is possibly the most ridiculous shop policy ever?

Went into a very well know retailer today, they sell frying pans and kitchen appliances...

Brought an electronic grater type thing that comes in a medium size box, got to the till and asked to purchase a large bag to put it in...

I was told they could only attach a handle to the box as....... They are not allowed to put boxes into bags..

All i could do was laugh, i asked if i purchased a bag separate if i could put it in myself and was told no they would refuse to sell the bag!!

So they'd sell you a bag as long as you didn't use it as a bag?? Confused

Dothetwist · 15/11/2015 17:55

Nope refused to sell a bag full stop.

It was very very odd... He put a handle on the box which came unstuck after 20 minutes

Name and shame!

In fact go on their facebook or twitter site and ask for an explanation.

Thattimeofyearagain · 15/11/2015 17:57

Which retailer op?

InQuiteAPickle · 15/11/2015 17:57

Confused That is bonkers. Did they tell you the reason why? I wonder what their reasoning is.

BikeRunSki · 15/11/2015 17:59

Was it L*l*d?!

Chiggers · 15/11/2015 18:00

W.T.A.F. I would have asked for a refund and walked out after getting my money back. I wouldn't shop in a place with such a stupid policy.

GwynethPaltrowIamNot · 15/11/2015 18:00

Oooh tell , who ? That's ridiculous

Curiouserandcuriouser30 · 15/11/2015 18:01

Was that really their policy?? Cashier sounds like a jobsworth

EponasWildDaughter · 15/11/2015 18:02

Abraxas?

(my favorite shop in the world! :))

TelephoneIgnoringMachine · 15/11/2015 18:04

Please name the shop. So we can avoid it, or at least bring our own bags.

BlueJug · 15/11/2015 18:11

But there are reasons for all these policies. I have so often seen perfectly packaged goods in boxes then put into huge plastic bags which are used to carry said box to a car. Car is unloaded, bag is binned. Waste.

A handle should be fine - or bring own bags.

We always used to bring bags - we just allowed this system to slowly grow over the years - and we pass the cost on to next generations who will clear up the mess.

I know it isn't a popular view but there you go.

Dothetwist · 15/11/2015 18:13

It begins with a T their frying pans have a red ring in the middle.

The cashier honestly could not explain why, they were putting utensils into bags when customers requested ones.. The restrictions were just on boxes into bags. Very odd

Tefal

Owllady · 15/11/2015 18:17

How discriminate :o
Box out of bag fascist

BalloonSlayer · 15/11/2015 18:37

It was before the bag ban but I once observed someone buying a posh handbag in Fenwicks.

The bag was in a cellophane bag already. Then the sales lady put it into a manufacturer's poncy cloth bag. Then she put it in a Fenwicks bag. So the purchaser eventually walked out of the shop with FOUR bags for one purchase.

Nothing to do with the OP story of course, but I have been looking for somewhere to air this particular "bag madness" tale for, oh, quite some time. Grin

brightnearly · 15/11/2015 18:42

Tell them you want to put the bag in the box.

Or come back and pretend you're your own twin sister, wanting to buy a bag!

Pedestriana · 15/11/2015 18:42

I had this happen to me in a high-street store a while back. When I asked why I was told that the bag could break and the item would consequently be damaged. I understand the logic but it rather assumes you have both hands free to carry the box.
If they're putting handles on that are not secure, then they need to sort that out. A handle on the box would let you carry the box the same way as if it were in a bag. If the handle is not adequately affixed then they may as well give out bags.

Dothetwist · 15/11/2015 18:43

Haha owl...

I left the shop baffled!

knobblyknee · 15/11/2015 18:52

It may not be their fault, the govt has introduced carrier bag legislation to reduce landfill waste, and all companies are trying to cut back on costs and waste. I just bought one of those granny bag in a bag things.

IdentityChrysalis · 15/11/2015 18:54

Doesn't say much for the quality of the pan/handle attachment if the shopping handle fell off immediately

RedSoloCup · 15/11/2015 23:31

Last time I bought something in Sports Direct (pre bag charges).

Cashier 'would you like one of these re-usable bags, they're £25p'
Me 'no thank you, I don't need a bag my car's right outside'
Cashier 'okay I'll put it (rucksack) in to a free bag'
Me 'no it's fine I don't need a bag at all, my car is just outside'
Cashier 'sorry you HAVE to have a bag for security reasons'
Me 'but I will have a receipt, that's fine surely?'
Cashier 'no sorry you HAVE to have a bag'

Wonder if they have changed this policy now?

GruntledOne · 15/11/2015 23:36

Could it be because their bags aren't strong enough or big enough to carry boxes?

MsAdorabelleDearheartVonLipwig · 15/11/2015 23:57

I hope you went back and told him his handle broke.

NorahBone · 16/11/2015 00:10

Red, a busybody cashier in Boots once told me I had to have a bag because I was buying sanitary towels. Apparently it's company policy to spare your blushes with some semi-transparent plastic (although I'm pretty sure it's not as no one else has ever objected and she kind of embarrassed me for not being embarrassed about menstruating).
