To think this is possibly the most ridiculous shop policy ever?

Went into a very well know retailer today, they sell frying pans and kitchen appliances...

Brought an electronic grater type thing that comes in a medium size box, got to the till and asked to purchase a large bag to put it in...

I was told they could only attach a handle to the box as....... They are not allowed to put boxes into bags..

All i could do was laugh, i asked if i purchased a bag separate if i could put it in myself and was told no they would refuse to sell the bag!!

Red I can confirm that they have indeed changed that policy.

We walked out of one yesterday with arms full of sweatshirts and not a bag in sight.

OK, the security bloke had a bit of a glare, but I gaily waived the receipt around and all went quiet Smile

I've shopped at two different branches of Sports Direct for years and have never had a bag. Reeipt alone has always been fine.

Re OP, not sure why you needed a bag when the cashier put handles on the box. Surely it was just to make carrying easier, which is basically the reason for a bag.

nocoolnamesleft · 16/11/2015 03:08

I'd demand being sold the bag in that context. With a bag, I can stick my wrist through the handles, so I still have 1/2 hand to open the door/car door. The other hand being needed for my stick. That doesn't work with those crappy handles on boxes. So a disablist policy.

Yeah, that doesn't make a lick of sense. Even if it were to prevent shop lifting, wouldn't walking around with a bag in the first place draw suspicion and make security watch you closely?

Paid 5p for a bag, it split, she said I'd have to pay 5p for another. ( this was after I'd put my card through so had to put my card through again for 5p)

I agree nocoolnamesleft. I hook bags on the back my wheelchair. I need a hand free to steer, and the other hand has my bag. I wouldn't have been able to take the box without the bag, as a handle wouldn't work in the same way.

OurBlanche · 16/11/2015 11:58

We picked up a box this morning. They put it in a bag, the bag split as they did so... and yes, you have guessed it, they rang 2 bags through the till.

DH did what he usually does, looked surprised, muttered and then said loudly and clearly "Right! You can keep it. We'll buy it somewhere that really wants to keep its customers"

And out we went, to buy it in the next shop along, with no bag, no hassle Smile

Oldraver · 16/11/2015 18:27

I did see someone with two Tefal purchases under their arms today and assumed they had not wanted to buy the bag

Was it you OP Grin

Yep Red DH went to sports direct the other day, everyone was refusing bags so the cashier had to get on the walkie talkie to security each time someone left - "bald man with a pair of kids wellies on his way out" Grin
