Yeah you can fuck right off with you 'usually starting at age 40" seneca

MrsGradyOldLady · 15/11/2015 01:02

In fact you can fuck off to the far side of fuck and when you get there you can fuck off a little more Grin

SenecaFalls · 15/11/2015 01:35

Math is your friend (or your enemy, as the case may be, here). The average life expectancy in the UK and the US is slightly less than 80. The middle would be half of that. I'm really chuckling a bit at people on this thread, and in RL, who think that middle age begins at 50. Yeah, if you live to be 100, maybe. Smile

ExBallerina · 15/11/2015 01:37

All relative I think.

DH is 33 and old. Sore back, always tired, hates people on his lawn.
My grandfather is 89 and goes dancing til the wee hours every Friday night.

scatterthenuns · 15/11/2015 01:41

The age you are before you have kids. It feels like the youth is all transferred through the placenta.

HicDraconis · 15/11/2015 01:52

I'm in my early 40s and still young, thanks :-)

Physiological age, chronological age, mental age all vary from person to person. I feel far younger (in terms of energy, life, health, fitness) in my 40s than I did in my 30s. Chronologically I'm middle aged, but physiologically, no way :)

Old = the generation above, except I know a lot of people in their mid sixties that I wouldn't count as old (still working full time, training 4-6 times a week). Again, all depends on the person. I knew some 30 somethings that were more old lady at 30 than my grandmothers were at 70.

spanisharmada · 15/11/2015 01:53

I consider myself to be young as I'm only in my early 30's, and right now I'm the youngest I'm ever going to be!

FabergeEggs · 15/11/2015 02:00

Considering most women in their twenties now look approximately 35 I only consider the under-21s to be young.

madmother1 · 15/11/2015 02:10

I'm not going to call myself old until I'm 80 Wink

PedantPending · 15/11/2015 08:49

Young = anyone younger than I am
Old = anyone older than I am
I am 57 chronologically, look about 10 years younger and fell about 26

StormyBlue · 15/11/2015 09:06

I think somewhere between 25 and 30 ish, depending on the maturity of the person. I went to university with a girl who graduated at 27 who had essentially just traveled around and partied since school who felt the same age as me when I started at 18.

Fairylea · 15/11/2015 09:26

I'm 35 and apart from the two marriages and two children I've had I don't feel any different to I did when I was 18 Grin I refuse to get old. I think it's all a state of mind to be honest. You can have physical problems or mental health issues at any age that prevent you being able to enjoy life to the full, it's not necessarily an age thing. Being young to me is about not being afraid to live and never giving up the fight to make the most of your life.

Floisme · 15/11/2015 12:45

You know, getting older is hard enough without having people telling you that it's all a state of mind, as if that old age were some kind of personal inadequacy that you could beat if you really wanted to.

Open mindedness, curiosity and enjoying life to the full are not the preserve of any one age group. Old age is a life stage that we will all go through, if we get lucky.

SenecaFalls · 15/11/2015 13:01

Why is old seen a such a negative thing? That's what we really need to ask.

Floisme · 15/11/2015 13:28

Exactly, Seneca. Attitudes to age on Mumsnet are thoroughly depressing, although also quite comical when you conisder how many posters are middle aged themselves.

Grilledaubergines · 15/11/2015 13:34

I see age negatively in that it's the aches, pains, becoming invisible, in theory closer to death etc. I don't view older people themselves negatively but more what "old" represents.

TimeToMuskUp · 15/11/2015 13:36

I'm 34 and see anyone in their twenties or below as 'young'. I don't feel old, necessarily, but wouldn't consider myself young any more. I love Boden and Ocado too much to ever be young again.

BackforGood · 15/11/2015 13:39

The thing is, although I'm more than half way through the number of years I'm going to live - as in Seneca's way of describing old or middle aged, I think everyone (apart from seneca maybe) would agree that "middle aged" is all about attitude, not the number of years you have on the clock.

You can fuck off with your 30 is middle aged! Ludicrous!

ChickadeeChick · 15/11/2015 13:49

Thanks for this. I'm 31 and I've just realised I'm not young anymore. Sad

SirChenjin · 15/11/2015 13:55

I'm 46 - anyone under mid to late twenties is young. As I get older my definition of 'young' also gets older.

Floisme · 15/11/2015 13:56

No, not just seneca. I strongly disagree with this point of view. In fact it seriously pisses me off. Middle age and old age are normal life stages, not some kind of moral deficiency that you will avoid as long as you carry on clubbing or whatever.

HootsMon · 15/11/2015 14:11

Medically, middle age starts at 35 and old age starts at 65.

When I started my current job, which involves reviewing a lot of medical records, I read a coroner's report in which the deceased was referred to as 'a 37-year old middle-aged woman'. I was 38 at the time - I was a bit Shock.
