to call Dh off a night shift for poorly dc's?

Ds was sick last week and vomited, no temp but has had a runny nose since.
Dd started with feeling sick and a really high temp yesterday but no other symptoms and went to school fine this morning.
Just got to bedtime and both have 39.5 and 39.7 degree temperatures and I've just checked throats and both have white spots (although dds were very hard to spot as she had her tonsils removed earlier this year )
Should I call Dh out of work and do out of hours or take them to docs first thing in morning?
I'm concerned as their temperatures are so high.

Should add dd is 6 and ds is 2.

Alternate with calpol and neurofen if you have them to bring their temperature down. Sponge them down with a tepid cloth and sleep on the floor in their room if you can and they should be fine until morning.

Are they both drinking?

KatharineClifton · 12/11/2015 21:00

Have you phoned out of hours yet? Do you normally cope with two sick kids by yourself?

Only1scoop · 12/11/2015 21:00

Have you given them meds to take temp down?

dementedpixie · 12/11/2015 21:01

Have they had any medicines yet? I would do that first before thinking about going to the doctors.

Only1scoop · 12/11/2015 21:01

Why did you need your Oh to come home from work?

ItsAllAboutTheCakes · 12/11/2015 21:02

Sorry should have explained, just to take them to out of hours, I don't drive and nearest one is miles away.

Yes both had calpol and ibuprofen alternated, ds' temp has come down slightly but dds has stayed very high

dementedpixie · 12/11/2015 21:03

Sponging down is not something that is recommended btw

dementedpixie · 12/11/2015 21:04

I would only consider it if the temperature doesn't respond to meds.

duckyneedsaclean · 12/11/2015 21:04

Give them paracetamol and ibuprofen, turn the heating off, just underwear on. Lots of water/juice/ice poles. Doctor in the morning.

It won't do them any good to sit around a waiting room for three hours.

ItsAllAboutTheCakes · 12/11/2015 21:04

Not worried about coping alone just thinking maybe I should be getting them on anti bs, dd has had an awful time with strep throat and had her tonsils out earlier in the year.

Yeah I thought that, by the time we get seen now we will probably only be a few hours later waiting for the doctors in the morning!

DeathMetalMum · 12/11/2015 21:06

Is there a pharmacy you can get to tonight though? Our latest one closes at 9pm so wouldn't be able to get the anti-b's until the morning anyway.

ItsAllAboutTheCakes · 12/11/2015 21:06

Sore throats just scare me a bit, dd has had scarlet fever twice as a result of a nasty strep infection so I'm probably overly cautious.

ItsAllAboutTheCakes · 12/11/2015 21:07

Our out of hours has a 24 hour pharmacy in it

Tuck them up in bed and be aware it'll be a long night for you.
They don't need ooh.

gamerchick · 12/11/2015 21:07

I wouldn't for that temp, if it goes over 40 and I can't get it down then I worry. If they are drinking just keep an eye on them but I wouldn't be taking them out tonight.

Obviously I can only go off your posts, you know your kids.

RB68 · 12/11/2015 21:10

my view dose them up and keep cool without sponging etc (apparently it only cools outside not inside or something and this isn't good) drinks and if you have icey things those to ease sore throats. White spots indicate bacterial so anti b needed but so long a temp controlled (and bear in mind some take longer to react to meds than others) they will be fine till am

AnotherStitchInTime · 12/11/2015 21:11

Just strip them off, light sheet and get some paracetamol or ibuprofen suspension into them along with plenty of fluids. If their temperatures do not come down in an hour phone 111 or OOH for advice. Mine have spiked temperatures that high before, it is not of concern in itself. I find the NICE traffic light table helpful in gauging when to seek help too. Get them seen in the morning if their temperatures come down as they may need antibiotics if their tonsils/tonsils beds are infected.

ouryve · 12/11/2015 21:14

I have a med refuser and a lukewarm bath helps regulate his temperature, when he has a fever. Even when he's been listless, it really perks him up. Much more effective than sponging down.

ItsAllAboutTheCakes · 12/11/2015 21:16

Just checked on dd and she's bright pink, rash looking. Dr Who saw her with scarlet fever for a second time was shocked as usually you only get it once but the rash looks like last time, maybe her temp is just making her pink?

My son has SF twice, it wouldn't surprise me if he got it again.

Ask your husband what he thinks, not MN.

ItsAllAboutTheCakes · 12/11/2015 21:22

Can't actually get hold of Dh at the minute anyway, so I'm a bit stuck. Sorry to hear your ds has had so twice too it's not nice at all is it? Poor dd has had all sorts of trouble from her tonsils. We've all had ours out on my side of the family but it doesn't seem to help with infections really.

OP posts:
lougle · 12/11/2015 21:24

Unless they are actively unwell, a fever itself isn't harmful. 39.7 is a sign that the body is fighting the infection. As long as they rouse when you poke them, they s shouldn't need to see a doctor tonight.
