This is so annoying

Chris Evans trying to get people to bid for experiences, that most of us don't have a chance of having the money for

One item went for £280,000!!!!
That would buy my house! !!

Hmmm... although I do find the auction and CiN a bit tedious, I think it is a very good well run charity, and am aware of a lot of local projects that depend on CiN money to survive. I work for a charity that wouldn't be eligible for CiN. Our funding is annual. We can't plan ahead really, and have to spend time putting in proposals every year, in the hope that we will still be eligible. This year weve been given a mountan to climb that was completely different to last years mountain, and 3 months to climb it. 3 year guaranteed funding allows charities to plan ahead. In order to do that, they need a surplus.

Hmm I'm sure you're right in your sister's case, Wash, but I have a friend who has worked for 2 charities - a very well-known national charity and a smaller one. When she tells me about their no expense spared staff Christmas jollys and the size of her salary, I just laugh and tell her that's why I don't give cash to charites any more.

TheImminentGin · 12/11/2015 18:52

CE and his fun filled weekends fill me with the rage. Rich priveliged people having a fabulous time to help poor folks. Thanks. Why not donate your weekend of driving wildly expensive cars, eating over priced food and watching Sir Paul Mcartney to a person me who would never in a lifetime be able to experience any of that, ever.
I hate it.
I hate CE banging on day after day about all the other things he is doing too. Shut the fuck up.

I adore Ken Bruce.

taleyy · 12/11/2015 18:58

I couldn't agree more.

Chris Evans is so annoying at the best of times but this week it's been just awful (yes, I still listen!).

It's the fact he's like "oh Laura in Windsor it looks like your bid of £50,000 is too low".

£50,000!!

Personally I don't think it has anything to do with rich vs poor, it's this irritating select group of CEs mates vs everyone else. "Oh I was gonna go to the New York marathon package, but decided the Brighton bus was better".

WHERE'S YOUR £280,000 Chris and Vassos?!!

Specialsnowflake1 · 12/11/2015 19:02

I love the auctions well done the people who can afford the mega bucks. I knew my df bid last year for something and lost out (he had bid big bucks). I can't get angry or pissed off at the people who manage to win. They are raising money for a good cause.

MyCarHasBrokenDownAgain · 12/11/2015 19:05

I agree with the OP. Haven't listened to Chris Evans on R2 for a couple of years now because of it!

ShowOfBloodyStumps · 12/11/2015 19:08

I am permanently broke. 280k would buy my house 3 times over. I will never be able to bid on these things, I can't afford £3 for the raffle.

Do I mind CiN on R2? Nope, not a jot. There are lots of things I'll never afford and for 4 days a year, I actually quite enjoy listening to them raising a lot of money for charity. I also work for one of those charities which relies on this sort of funding so am ever thankful that these things happen.

TendonQueen · 12/11/2015 19:12

It would be nice to include at least one more inclusive thing - the Dr Who raffle would be a brilliant idea. But it's never been that different: I found Terry smug and insufferable. And charities are supposed to maintain substantial reserves, so it would be irresponsible to spend all their funds.

I don't have a problem with CIN but the programme this week is just tedious.

Expect tomorrow will be more of the same but with the addition of Friday's guests who are always promoting something or other all getting into a back slapping frenzy.

Its tough and I can see both sides. I like to hear of the decent prices achieved and fantastic money can't buy (except of course it does) experiences, it gives a chance to fantasise. It is all a bit feel good.

The risk of turning into feel bad or even over questioning those that can is bids don't reach the hights they do and the charity and many many really good causes lose out.

The problem for me is my hour of radio on time whilst getting the DC ready is time I quite enjoy and whilst the CIN stuff is great its not something that relates to me in the way when they joke about usual day to day stuff like tv shows or funny things that have gone on in the world. I guess it makes me feel excluded.

CainInThePunting · 12/11/2015 19:24

I love listening to the CIN auctions.
Yes, I'd love to have that much disposable income to stand a chance of winning a bid but I'm not so envious that I'm not glad that they can and do bid for the experiences.

I'm heartened to know that there are people like the white knight willing to match bids just for the sake of donating money to a good cause.

I've taken up volunteering again, I get a lot of satisfaction out of it. It makes me feel good. I gain from that. What's the difference?

NewLife4Me · 12/11/2015 19:24

Maybe Chris Evans et al should pay the same percentage of their earnings as they ask us to do.
There would be no children in need then.
Apologies folks, I hate CIN for this reason.
Bloody multi millionaires and Billionaires asking me for my money Sad

Marmitelover55 · 12/11/2015 19:49

Thank god I defected to Heart last year - I hated the auction for things that money can't buy. I can't stand CE's smug, self absorbed attitude.

Bintheredunthat · 12/11/2015 19:50

Chris Evans & his annoying chums apart, I can't help thinking that maybe we wouldn't have so many children In need in this country, relying on charity, if there weren't people who have so much money they can afford to spend £50k on a day out? That's more than a lot of people work very hard to earn in 3 years or more.
There's plenty of money in the country just that's it's all in the hands of the lucky privileged few.
The Rich are now richer than they've ever been.
It's no coincidence that Fortnum & Mason's pre tax profits more than doubled in 2014 & in the same period 1.1 million people had to rely on food banks.
People paying £280k for a nice day out with Chris Evans & due to 'the cuts' I can no longer get desperately needed SEN support for the little children I work with.
Not right on any level. Angry

ShowOfBloodyStumps · 12/11/2015 20:01

Washediris, if you don't like him, don't listen to him. I really like his show. I feel the way you do about Steve Wright. I think he's out of touch, irritating and should be put out to pasture. I just don't listen to him.

I think a lot of people confuse personal opinion with fact.

I can't say I'm that bothered by it; I still listen.

I was slightly peeved though when they were blathering on earlier this week about the NY marathon auction. Oooh, what an experience; wasn't the London Marathon aaaammmaaaazzzing. It's alright for old Chris who can just pitch up on the day and get a place but for the rest of us who have tried and failed in the ballot for three years running, and don't have enough friends to guarantee £2.5k for a charity place, you know, we'd quite like that experience; the one they were all saying was so good because anyone could do it.

Hey ho. Anyway, CE didn't come from a wealthy background by any stretch so i don't begrudge him enjoying his money now. And he once read out DD2's Big Screen Belter and made her day.

PirateSmile · 12/11/2015 20:13

It's also worth mentioning that a lot of celebrities who've taken part in high profile charity events have since been implicated in controversial tax avoidance schemes.

GoEasyPudding · 12/11/2015 20:43

I'm well chuffed you like my Dr Who idea.

It would be so much more exciting, you can have a go for a tenner, feel included for the chance to be in your favorite show.

Other exciting shows the BBC own can do it too. How much would a Sherlock raffle raise? I for one would buy more than one ticket for that. Yes indeedie!(If they make more of them?)

This is a report on the Star Wars raffle.

Barns won the grand prize after donating $10 to the Star Wars: Force for Change contest, which ultimately raised $4,261,410 for UNICEF (enough to fund multiple new UNICEF Innovation Labs). Disney — which bought the rights to the franchise last year and planned the reboot — also donated $1 million.

Along with the cameo, Barns and a guest will get a behind-the-scenes look at the secretive Episode VII shoot in London, and a chance to meet the cast, including the stars of the original trilogy Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher and Mark Hamill.

Fans of the TV show Veronica Mars crowd funded the making of the movie and the biggest fans paid big bucks to be extras and someone got a speaking part.

Are there any shows you would buy a raffle ticket to be in? Shame Downtown Abbey has finished as I quite fancy being a random character in that crazy plot! "Mr Carson, I am your long lost Daughter!"

Hulababy · 12/11/2015 20:52

Most people forking out the multi thousands on these things won't be paying the whole lot themselves. Most will go through businesses and will involve tax back on the charity donations.
