To only wash my hair once a week

Dollymixtureyumyum · 06/11/2015 10:32

I have just been told I am disgusting by a "friend"
I only wash my very short hair once a week (sometimes longer) because frankly I hate having wet hair, I hate the feeling of water down my neck and I hate my head feeling cold.
I also hate getting out of the bath or shower for this reason but obviously force myself to do this once a day.
I use dry shampoo inbetween and noone has ever commented on my hair being a mess and I actually find it easier to style when it is a bit dirty.

I'm fully with Worra on this, OP! You have allowed her to sneak through your Social Armour.

File her stupid comment in the FFS Bin and move on to something more pleasant.

MidniteScribbler · 06/11/2015 16:21

Gosh, I wish I had hair that could last more than a day without washing. If I don't wash my hair in the morning then I feel dirty all day. Even if I have a shower and don't wash my hair then I still feel dirty.

ShebaQueen · 06/11/2015 16:23

I wash mine twice a week max. It is so fine and flyaway, I find it more manageable and less frizzy on day 2 and 3.

MediumBox · 06/11/2015 16:23

I rather wash my hair than using dry shampoo vile stuff

Mabelface · 06/11/2015 16:24

Banff, I put my hair in a high ponytail every night, let it down in the morning and just rub a little Boot's curl cream through it, job done, no frizz.

ShebaQueen · 06/11/2015 16:27

I might try that Madlizzy, thanks for the tip.

SevenSeconds · 06/11/2015 16:27

I wash mine once a week (or slightly more often - maybe once every 5 or 6 days) and leave it to dry naturally. My hair is in great condition, I'm sure it's because I've saved it from all those years of heat damage from the hairdryer!

SurlyCue · 06/11/2015 16:28

YANBU. I wash my hair daily. I can leave it a day if i'm not going out of the house but beyond that my scalp itches and is sore. But that's me!

If your hair doesnt need done more often then you dont need to do it. People are different!

Fwiw, if you are using hot water and your hair is very short i cant understand why your head would be cold? Surely you just rub it with the towel then blast with a hairdryer? Having said that, showering and hair washing is my favourite part of the day.

Cel982 · 06/11/2015 16:32

How rude of her. YANBU at all, it's much better for your hair not to be stripped of oils so frequently. I used to wash my hair every other day, I've now 'trained' it to only need washing twice a week, and it's much healthier for it.

Oldraver · 06/11/2015 16:32

I couldn't leave my hair more than tow days... I didnt wash it this morning and had to go back and have a shower and hair wash as it didn't feel right. I'm not that bothered how my hair looks but it has to feel ok

My Mum was a weekly washer, in the old days at the hairdresser, her hair is very course so maybe it can stand it. Mine would be greasy by day 3

Unreasonablebetty · 06/11/2015 16:34

I've been told by hairdressers not to wash my hair more Than once a week, however due to having a very small amount of thin hair I need all the help I can get so my hair gets washed every two days at least so I can get a bit of oomph in with the hairdryer.

Asking as it doesn't look greasy don't worry at all

HairyLittleCarrot · 06/11/2015 16:42

YANBU.

Many people can stretch out the length of time gradually between washes (if they wish) and their scalp adjusts and reduces its sebum production.

It's actually rather healthy if you get to a point where your hair looks and smells fine and doesn't demand daily detergent on your scalp.

hollieberrie · 06/11/2015 16:52

I absolutely hate showering and washing my hair too! I do it, but reluctantly, and wash my hair twice a week at most.

I think a big part of it is being very slim and therefore really feeling the cold. Could this be the reason for you too OP? I actually find getting in and out of the bath / shower an almost painful experience even though the water is hot and I always have the bathroom radiator on. I have to go straight to my room and stand in front of a little electric heater afterwards so just to feel normal again (even in the summer - yes i realise this is odd!).

Washing is overrated IMO - i much prefer being warm and dirty Wink

Iflyaway · 06/11/2015 17:42

Since I stopped shampooing twice as always recommended just to make you buy more shampoo I don't have greasy hair any more.

No idea if it's age/hormones/whatever.

WitchWay · 06/11/2015 17:48

I wash mine most days (shoulder length, dryer than it used to be) but leave it two days if it looks okay & I'm short of time in the morning. If I've been frying onions the night before I always wash it as it smells!

AgeingArtemis · 06/11/2015 21:10

I wash my hair twice a week (sometimes more often if I've got very sweaty) and I don't think there is anything wrong with washing it once a week as long as you have the type of hair that can get away with that.

But if your hair needs dry shampoo to keep it looking nice I would suggest that actually it's at the point where it needs a wash?

monkeysox · 06/11/2015 22:02

My sil washes my nieces very long thick hair once per week and her hair looks fine. But her head smells
Very badly.

Dollymixtureyumyum · 06/11/2015 22:04

I think i poss do have a fear of being cold and a bit of a fear of water. I was pushed out of a boat into a river when I was 15 and I remember feeling I would never be warm again as I could not get dry and warm for hours afterwards. As one poster suggested i do hate that getting out of the bath or shower and being cold, sometimes it makes me cry.
I just seems such a silly thing to have a fear of

Poor you Sad I don't particularly like being wet & have a thick towelling bathrobe with a hood - you absolutely need one!

KiwiLaura · 06/11/2015 23:05

I wash my hair once a week too - really thick, curly/frizzy hair and it takes over an hour to style it once washed. It doesn't really get greasy/oily until the day I'm due to wash it. Works for me.

KiwiLaura · 06/11/2015 23:06

To note, shower every day though!

trufflehunterthebadger · 06/11/2015 23:41

i have long, thick hair and it gets washed once a week, left to dry in the air and i never use products or heat on it. whenever i go to a new hairdresser they always comment on what good condition it is in.
