To only wash my hair once a week

I have just been told I am disgusting by a "friend"
I only wash my very short hair once a week (sometimes longer) because frankly I hate having wet hair, I hate the feeling of water down my neck and I hate my head feeling cold.
I also hate getting out of the bath or shower for this reason but obviously force myself to do this once a day.
I use dry shampoo inbetween and noone has ever commented on my hair being a mess and I actually find it easier to style when it is a bit dirty.

YANBU only washing your hair once a week (unless you get actual dirt in it).
However, if you are using dry shampoo, aren't you ending up with sticky hair after a while? Ime unwashed hair is OK until it gets greasy, which might take a while, but once it has products in it then those will need washing out fairly shortly.

Sallystyle · 06/11/2015 12:46

When I had long hair I only washed it once a week.

I have short hair now and have to wash it every other day because it seems to get greasy more quickly.

whois · 06/11/2015 12:48

If your hair isn't dirty looking or smelly then there is nothing wrong with just washing once a week.

WaitrosePigeon · 06/11/2015 12:49

I wish I was able to wash mine once a week. It gets greasy after a day and drives me mad. I'm trying my best to do it every other day at the moment..

Nabootique · 06/11/2015 12:57

I went from washing mine every other day to once a week, maybe twice at a push, and it looks much better. Initially I thought it might help calm down my flaky scalp (I've been talking about this on S&B). It hasn't done that, but it hasn't made it worse, and my hair is less greasy and easier to style. It doesn't smell and people have actually started saying it looks nice, which never really happened before.

ShamelessBreadAddict · 06/11/2015 13:01

Yanbu or disgusting. If I could get away without washing my hair every couple of days I would.

MaidOfStars · 06/11/2015 13:02

I wash my longish (middle of back) hair maybe three or four times a week.

It might just be my hair, or I might be paranoid about it, but doesn't your hair pick up smells from cooking etc (I'm assuming you don't smoke, otherwise I'd be amazed if you thought once a week was OK).

And don't you exercise?

mrsbabookaloo · 06/11/2015 13:09

Once a week for me. I haven't got time to wash and dry it more often. Just remember, a lot of people's habits and rights and wrongs are just due to cultural/ social expectations, which change over time, but often aren't based on anything real or scientific.

TheNoodlesIncident · 06/11/2015 13:13

Envy I have to wash my hair every day. It looks really greasy if I don't. The only time it has deviated from this is when I was pregnant, it stopped falling out and never looked greasy/dirty so I could wash it twice a week instead.

In fact, mulling it over: Envy Envy Envy I'm sure it's much better for your scalp really.

abbieanders · 06/11/2015 13:15

I only wash my hair once a week, too. It's curly and dyed blonde so dry as get all out. Even at that, I don't use shampoo on it any more. The condition has really improved and frankly, I wish it would get greasy the odd time!

MrsCorbyn · 06/11/2015 13:15

Yeah your friend was rude but that does sound a long, long time between washes

hefzi · 06/11/2015 13:20

Another once a week washer here: when I was washing it every day, it needed washing every day. When I did it every other day, it would be greasy and need washing every other day. Now I wash it every week, it only looks like it needs a wash just before I wash it. So what? Well, when you wash it, you're stripping the oils out, so if you wash it more frequently, your hair goes into over-drive trying to replace them quickly enough - bingo: hair that gets greasier quicker.

So - I don't think you are BU: but I think it's bloody rude of your "friend" to comment, unless it was in a very gentle way because she has noticed that your hair always smells, or something.

nebulae · 06/11/2015 13:25

I think your friends could have been more tactful but I understand where she's coming from. I couldn't bear to wash my hair only once a week. Not that my hair gets particularly greasy but I like it to feel clean and the only way you can have that every day is to wash it every day. Even without the grease/dirt issue, your hair collects smells throughout the day (cooking smells, cigarette smoke etc).

Apart from that, washing your hair weekly means that your scalp only gets cleaned once a week. I don't think many of us would leave any other part of our body unwashed for a week so why the scalp?

ouryve · 06/11/2015 13:28

Mine is very short and stinks and itches after 2 days. it also looks a mess.

Doesn't dry shampoo just stick to the grease? I don't see how it actually gets hair clean.

diddl · 06/11/2015 13:29

Do you think that your hair needs washing more often but you just can't bear to?

I know that mine would have a sort of well, not fresh smell by then.

You also say that it's easier to style if dirty?

Do you actually mean dirty as in needs a wash?

lorelei9 · 06/11/2015 13:32

I know someone who does this and she thinks her hair looks fine but it doesn't and sometimes I think "how have you come out like that?" I think she knows because I see her fiddling with it on those days. Grim.

but....I wash my hair daily. I've either been on public transport - blech - or working out though, there's never a day where neither of those happen. I am quite sensitive to the smell of hair that's not been washed even for a couple of days, I used to notice it on boyfriends etc.

TheOnlyWayToEatSandwiches · 06/11/2015 13:40

I wash mine more like once every 2 weeks - if that - same with my body. Like you OP I don't like baths and showers so try to avoid them.

Nobody, not even my dp, had said I smelled or looked dirty, in 20 years of being very relaxed about my bath time routine. I clean the dirty bits as needed - and change clothes most days. But a full body and hair wash, every day, is mental, imo.

Historically people did not bathe anywhere near as much, or at all in many cases. I think the only people all this daily bathing benefits are the people selling associated products and paraphernalia.

Think of the skin flora!

SaucyJack · 06/11/2015 13:42

Whatever floats your boat. Greasy hair isn't a crime.

I wash mine every day tho because it starts to dreadlock underneath if I don't put conditioner through it every day.

Strokethefurrywall · 06/11/2015 13:42

Meh - I have long curly hair which I straighten with ghds and if I washed it every day it would never be dry!

I wash it once, maybe twice a week unless I'm exercising when I do it more. This is why I love messy buns and dry shampoo.

banff82 · 06/11/2015 14:00

How do people with curly hair get away with only washing it once a week? Do you tie it back in between times? I have long, naturally curly hair (not coarse, quite fine but I have tons of it) and at most I can get away with 2 days between washes, or it will look like ive stuck my finger in a socket after sleeping on it a second time. I do a lot of exercise though so generally wash it every day. Any longer than 2 days and it would definitely not feel clean to me; I like the feel and smell of clean hair. I don't know how anyone's hair would look, feel or smell clean after a week unless you don't cook, exercise, sweat etc.

Gruntfuttock · 06/11/2015 15:00

TheOnlyWayToEatSandwiches "I wash mine more like once every 2 weeks - if that - same with my body. Like you OP I don't like baths and showers so try to avoid them."

Wow. Do you actively dislike being clean? I love being clean and I enjoy baths but am happy to have a shower if there's no time for a bath or there isn't one available.

formerbabe · 06/11/2015 15:37

I wash my hair twice a week.

It's very thick and long. It takes an hour to dry and style it. I don't have time to do it more often and it rarely gets greasy.

It depends on the texture of your hair how often you wash it. Very fine, straight hair gets greasy a lot quicker than thick or curly hair.

chickensaresafehere · 06/11/2015 15:43

I wash mine once a week,no-one has ever said anything even my husband!!

FishOn · 06/11/2015 15:47

When mine was short it looked fecking shocking in the morning - I had to wash it. I couldn't go out like that. I timed it once and it look one and a half minutes to blow dry Grin

Now it's long I only wash it twice a week. No way would I leave it longer as I loathe that dirty hair smell.

If it looks and smells fine then I don't see the problem.

snowgirl1 · 06/11/2015 15:58

I don't like the feeling of water running down my neck or a cold head, but still wash my hair every day - I just wrap a towel round my head, turban style, then blow dry it. If you're happy your hair looks fine, then all good I guess.
