FFS even before the terrible event, people took advantage of a cheap package holiday because and only because there were risks attached. That doesn't make them bad people but when they winge it does make them twats.

ArmchairTraveller · 06/11/2015 08:43

I've always been a bit humourless about bombs and dead civillians.
I blame a Forces upbringing, the IRA and the death of a friend due to a parcel bomb when she was 15. HTH to explain my response.

'there were risks attached. That doesn't make them bad people but when they winge it does make them twats.'

You could make that a stickie for the Relationships board. [lightheartedwink]

AliceTerrapin · 06/11/2015 08:48

I don't feel a huge amount of sympathy for those particular people, sorry. Unless you prove that they went there with absolutely no idea why it was cheap, they took a holiday that was high risk. They are lucky that they are being "rescued" when they are in a safe resort and in no immediate danger. They are also going to be on a flight that is obviously safe.

AliceTerrapin · 06/11/2015 08:50

I worked in Baghdad all through the invasion until the oil production was taken down. I was making a lot of money and didn't expect to be rescued for doing an extremely high risk job.

MuddhaOfSuburbia · 06/11/2015 08:52

I for one would LOVE it if Brenda ever put [LIGHTHEARTED] in a thread title

Grin

anyway wind your neck in

loads of kids round this way still on hol beginning of this week

AliceTerrapin · 06/11/2015 08:57

What is HTH?
Why is Brenda disliked?
Why is this forum still going when people are not allowed to have a differing opinion with another without someone screaming offence or trigger?

BrianCoxReborn · 06/11/2015 08:57

It's too earlier for this

I can't get worked up at op. The parents pay a bigger fine, or had e treated days tagged on to half term. They probably care more about being safe.

MuddhaOfSuburbia · 06/11/2015 09:04

Some are so terrified that they are refusing to leave unless they have their luggage with them too

I only just got this

[obelix thinking emoticon]

ReallyTired · 06/11/2015 09:18

Why this thread? Does it matter to you if some kids you don't know miss school? A recent court case showed that parents have to ensure regular attendance rather than banning term time holidays.

treaclesoda · 06/11/2015 09:21

I think this thread is all in fairly poor taste. Those people stranded must be very worried indeed.

But could someone explain something, as I think I might be being a bit slow this morning. When you say that some people are so terrified that they are refusing to leave without their luggage, what does that mean? Well, I know what the sentence means, but what I mean is, how would they feel safer if they have their luggage with them?

shebird · 06/11/2015 09:22

Not sure why anyone would want to go to this region on holiday with their kidsShock I guess no one bothered to look at where they were going on a map - just saw cheap holiday and off they went.

treaclesoda · 06/11/2015 09:26

I think criticising people for holidaying there is very harsh. The foreign office and tour operators assess situations and issue travel advice and until the other day it was still considered safe to go to that particular part of Egypt. Some people (like me!) are born worriers, so I wouldn't go there anyway. But if you have been assured that somewhere is safe by people whose job it is to assess these things, there is no particular reason not to believe them.

And as for why they go, maybe they liked the sound of it? Why does anyone go anywhere?

Just get on the plane and be grateful that you are being looked after.

This exactly

KondosSecretJunkRoom · 06/11/2015 09:35

If the OP had been: who takes their family to a place as dangerous as Egypt and then complains about having to leaving their baggage behind when shipped home safely?

I'd have been all over that with a YANBU but I still think it's worth waiting till they are home safe before criticising.

But, I think if you are making a cheap shot at people who take in term holidays as they and their children board a flight that is yet to get home safe, you are a bit of a cunt.

What else can we make fun of in the news headlines? Doesn't matter what, deaths, tax credit cuts maybe? Yes, as long as we put 'lighthearted' in the title or a winking smiley then it's fine!!!

Hoppinggreen · 06/11/2015 09:43

I think that given a choice of taking all my luggage on a pland checked purely by Egyptian security or hand luggage only on a plane throughly checked by British security services I know which one I would choose.
People should be bloody grateful to the government for doing this to keep them safe, and to be honest I think they are pretty daft to have gone in the first place.

lifesalongsong · 06/11/2015 09:44

Yes, because security check are only necessary for other people and only those with nothing to hide would bother to pay.

MumOnTheRunAgain · 06/11/2015 09:45

'Lighthearted' is just an excuse to bully/belittle.... Similiar to 'I'm not being racist but....' Or when a woman suffers violence at the hands of a partner, he can just say ' I didn't mean it like that'.... It's fine, it's 'lighthearted' Hmm
