to give my kids stir-fry for tea?

They think IABVU! They are 19 months, 4.5 and 14. It's a perfectly nice one, with egg noodles, sweet chilli sauce stuff and veg they quite like (baby sweetcorn and carrots etc). They have refused to even so much as touch it. Not a morsel has passed their lips. I spent 5 whole minutes slaving (not shaving autocorrect wtf!) over a hot wok to make that.

AIBU to give up and give them toast. Or Nutella on toast. Or not let them have anything till they have at least attempted to eat it.

Tbf we haven't had it ever in a while but still...

Pffft!

Chicken?
King Prawns?

If just veg and noodles I think I might be on their side Grin however they would have to at least try it!

confusedandemployed · 05/11/2015 17:07

YANBU.

YWBVU to cave and give them Nutella on toast though. This household is very much a "You eat the food on your plate or you eat nothing" household.

bittapitta · 05/11/2015 17:08

I wouldn't offer anything else, no. Maybe for the 19mo I'd separate some bits out in case they are overwhelmed by the mix/jamboree! But only maybe. So yanbu!

HeadDreamer · 05/11/2015 17:08

My two would love it. They both adore pasta. 4yo thinks noodles are pasta. (She's right ofc because Marco Polo took noodles to Italy and it became pasta).

BarbarianMum · 05/11/2015 17:09

In my house you eat what you're given or wait til the next meal. No toast option here . Learning that if you sometimes eat something you don't really like/fancy nothing bad will happen is a great life lesson in my book.

ShatnersKaBOOM · 05/11/2015 17:09

If the other option was Nutella on toast, I wouldn't eat the stir fry. They always smell nicer than they taste, and are boring to eat.

Elllicam · 05/11/2015 17:11

My two will only eat stir fry in bits, they'll eat plain noodles, plain veg and plain chicken bits. Dull as anything but they don't like sauce xx

Elllicam · 05/11/2015 17:11

Apologies for the kisses I am sleep deprived

GreenSand · 05/11/2015 17:13

Add some meat, and I'll send DS1 round. He'll be appreciative but will pick out any pepper

FrozenPonds · 05/11/2015 17:15

Ah, sweet chilli is grim.

Black bean sauce, ginger, soy sauce, and some chicken or tofu, and rice would make it miles better! Grin

AradiasDaemon · 05/11/2015 17:15

See, mine love pasta as well, I tried to convince the 4 year old that it was 'special spaghetti'. Thought I'd get away with it but no.

Ah yes chicken, I knew there was something I forgot. Blush

I'm leaning towards 'it's this or nothing' but I don't know if I can deal with hearing 'I'm huuuungryyyyy' 437 times before bedtime.

It's my own fault for letting them snack after getting in from school. If I didn't know better I'd think they didn't feed him, he's always ravenous when he gets in.

SocksRock · 05/11/2015 17:19

It would be eat it or there is nothing else. No toast. But that would mainly be because I've been v lazy at making it recently and there isn't any. Mine have gone to bed with no tea when they have refused to eat what I've cooked. I don't cook stuff I don't think they will like, so tough.

WheresMyBurrito · 05/11/2015 17:19

I can understand the two little ones being difficult, but your 14 yr old needs to suck it up and get it eaten (or make their own meals in future!).

fitzbilly · 05/11/2015 17:19

You cannot cave and give them something else! They have to eat what they're given out nothing else.

Nothing wrong with a veggie stir fry.

bittapitta · 05/11/2015 17:19

Well if they've snacked too then they'll be fine going to bed without anything else. Milk before bedtime to line their stomachs if you want.

MrsMarigold · 05/11/2015 17:21

My two aged 4 and 3 eat stir fry. In fact they used to be awful but I just stopped snacks and give lots of variety and they now eat most things, if they don't I just clear up. I always give a glass of milk after supper so at least they don't go to bed starving if they haven't eaten, also makes me feel less guilty.

HeadDreamer · 05/11/2015 17:22

sweet chilli is grim

This actually. I made stir fried noodles all the time, but I'll never just put sweet chilli sauce in them. My 1 and 4yo both eat them.

If you want something sweetish, try combining light soy, dark soy, ketchup, curry powder, chilli bean paste and sugar. It's my version of sweet singapore noodles. Most children love ketchup. I'm sure that's why my two love sweet and sour chicken too.

WheresMyBurrito · 05/11/2015 17:23

Though saying that I missed the sweet chilli bit. I wouldn't eat sweet chilli either, sorry!

NickiFury · 05/11/2015 17:23

If they ALL refused to eat it then I would probably think it wasn't very nice and yes, I would give them something else.

I'm always a bit Hmm at "they'll eat what they're given or nothing" so dictatorial and miserable. I well remember the misery of nasty dinners when I was starving after being at school all day. I don't one person should always get to decide what everyone eats, how hard is it to ask what they'd like every now and then?

BrianButterfield · 05/11/2015 17:24

Mine wouldn't eat it and stir fry is one of the few meals I don't really like. It's too mixed-up for a lot of kids, I think, and I agree they're quite boring to eat.

HeadDreamer · 05/11/2015 17:25

See, mine love pasta as well, I tried to convince the 4 year old that it was 'special spaghetti'. Thought I'd get away with it but no.

Do they only eat specific spaghetti? Like spag bol? It could be the sauce then. I wonder if they will eat sweet chilli sauce on spaghetti?

Mine will never eat a squash pasta, for example. You know those fancy squash with buttered sage ones. Or courgette pasta. I tried both and they both didn't like them.

BabyGanoush · 05/11/2015 17:25

stir fry?

In England, most people's stir fry are full of mushy veg and the wrong sauce (sweet chilli is a dipping sauce) and mushy noodles

Clearly your kids are snobby stir fry connoisseurs, just like me Wink

So, have you eaten it? is it delicious?

WorldsBiggestGrotbag · 05/11/2015 17:28

Veg, noodles and sweet chilli sauce sounds pretty dull to me.

Janeymoo50 · 05/11/2015 17:29

It would be better with some crispy chicken nuggety things on top.

Katarzyna79 · 05/11/2015 17:36

my kids love thai stir fry but it has prawns in it very hot with veg and jasmine rice. its my fave dish called drunken noodles, this is the rice version i could eat it everyday, i even order it from takeaways if they make it well lol

my kids would eat stir fry with just eggs in the mix and some green chillies. I don't think its nutritious enough without some veg or tofu in there, husband methinks is lazy he thinks its fine lol fortunately kids agree with me.

tis true chilli sauce more for dipping but it can be used to add sweet chilli flavour if you lack sugar and good chillies in the house.

I would carry on giving them if with more varied veg next time, i mean how to kids in asia like it, because theyre given it all the time. i did give my kids it since they were toddlers, excuse me they used to pull if off my plate lol
