A message has appeared on my Facebook wall from brother in law to say he has checked in at his local crematorium. I knew he was going to a funeral, but surely I am correct in thinking that this is so not the thing to do!

I don't have Facebook so really want to know.....is this a thing now???? Checking in at GUM clinic, crematorium , all the things we used to keep quiet or respectful about? I'm fascinated!

CocktailQueen · 03/11/2015 11:28

Yes, that's pretty bad. Surely he should be thinking about the funeral he's about to attend, not updating FB? Gah. Perhaps he'll upload some shots of the coffin or the cremation?? Hmm

Indantherene · 03/11/2015 11:32

Perhaps he is just letting people know where he is and/or giving them a heads up not to contact him while he's there?

Bookeatingboy · 03/11/2015 11:32

Some people just don't appreciate when they've gone too far... your BIL being one of those.

IKillEveryBloodyThreadIPostOn · 03/11/2015 11:35

Ynbu.

I had a 'friend' who checks into absolutely everywhere, and provides detailed descriptions along with it.

Recently she checked into the hospital as she had to give a stool sample Hmm thank god she didn't provide pictures!

FattyNinjaOwl · 03/11/2015 11:35
Confused Surely he should have a bit more respect for the family.
DextersMistress · 03/11/2015 11:36

That is bad.

My sil checks in literally everywhere she goes, including when she's on holiday you know, just to make sure everyone knows the house is empty Hmm

'Jane Doe checked in at casa del Doe' grr.

flyhigh · 03/11/2015 11:38

Shakes head in disbelief......

SheHasAWildHeart · 03/11/2015 11:39

As bad as 'x has checked into hospital' with no more detail then followed lots of people asking 'are you ok hun? what's happened hun?'

exaspero · 03/11/2015 11:41

that is bad.

Do you have to manually check in? It can't auto-update itself can it?

Just trying to think of a reason why some people on my FB check in everywhere all the time Hmm

VinylScratch · 03/11/2015 11:42

YANBU. I posted a few months ago about someone who checked in at a funeral and tagged the deceased in itShock. General consensus was that it was not unreasonable to find it disrespectful, are people so self absorbed they can't leave Facebook behind for a few hours and concentrate on paying their last respects.

Enjolrass · 03/11/2015 11:43

Yanbu and as for the 'maybe it's so people know where he is and don't call him'

I can honestly say I have never checked Facebook to see where people are checked in, before calling them.

peaz · 03/11/2015 11:45

My cousin did this, followed by a selfie, at my brothers funeral. She is 40 so I can't even say even say she was being a bit naive. I didn't notice it until a few months later with my DSIL told me (DB's wife) and how upset she was.

My brother was a larger than life character and I think DC saw the occasion as a celebration but it was very tactless and my DSIL won't forget it in a hurry.

IKnowIAmButWhatAreYou · 03/11/2015 11:45

I can honestly say I have never checked Facebook to see where people are checked in, before calling them.

It's more so you can see if any friends are in the same area - more use when on the piss in London than in a crematorium you'd think though...

hibbleddible · 03/11/2015 11:47

It's a sign off the times.

I really don't get the Facebook check in function at all. I don't care where anyone is.

This does seem almost disrespectful. Yuck.

I remember this, how awful!

jaketweeneyistooadvancedfor2 · 03/11/2015 11:51

I've seen a friend check in at the local park n ride. Seriously, I was so excited that they'd parked their car and bought a bus ticket, I could barely contain myself!!

MadeMan · 03/11/2015 11:54

"I posted a few months ago about someone who checked in at a funeral and tagged the deceased in it."

That is really bad. Could only be worse by lifting the deceased's head and shoulders up out of the coffin to share a selfie photo.

Enjolrass · 03/11/2015 11:56

t's more so you can see if any friends are in the same area - more use when on the piss in London than in a crematorium you'd think though...

some said earlier it was so people know not to disturb him and where he was

SomeWeirdPumpkin · 03/11/2015 11:57

Don't some people set their phone so that it's 'checks them in' automatically? If that is the case, when the time comes, I will ask that my family turn on my mobile phone and slip it into the coffin with me (my friends will understand my dark sense of humor!).

MadeMan · 03/11/2015 11:58

Checking in to the furnace...

Aramynta · 03/11/2015 11:59

I love holiday check ins and the like. Effectively advertising that your house is empty to all and sundry. Especially if you add anyone and everyone, check in when you are at home (A.K.A handing out your address) and boas about how much £££ you have just spent on a band new, expensive iMac computer (Yes, colleague, you!).

VinylScratch · 03/11/2015 11:59

To make it even worse the husband of the deceased had repeatedly asked people after her death not to tag her in any "missing X so much" type statuses as he and their teenage children found it hard to see, people ignored him and did it anyway.

The80sweregreat · 03/11/2015 12:02

Funerals are no place for phones or check in status's. It should be some kind of common law! you turn them off for the whole time your in the chapel too. Its just respect.

PuntasticUsername · 03/11/2015 12:02

Perhaps he is just letting people know where he is and/or giving them a heads up not to contact him while he's there?"

If he wants people to know he's unavailable, he should just turn his sodding phone off. It's not difficult.
