to never want to go to the same place twice for a holiday?

as we have a reasonable summer fortnight budget?

We don't have a huge or unlimited budget, far from it. But we are lucky enough to be able to go more or less anywhere within Europe for a couple of weeks in middle of the road self catering accom.

So aibu to think that it's not terribly imaginative to keep going back and back again to the same place in these circumstances?

Harsh to NEVER go to the same place ever again. I'll never understand why anyone goes to the same place year on year though.

lashawn · 01/11/2015 22:45

We're planning on going back to the same place we went to this summer next year. We loved it, it was great value, it ticked every box. We figure why chance it with somewhere unknown that might not be as good?

We wouldn't do it year after year though, that would be unimaginative.

donajimena · 01/11/2015 22:47

It's entirely your choice! Why do you ask? I've been on holiday to the same place for the last 6 times.. because... I know the airport/train/bus to the town. I
Also I didn't see everything I wanted to see the last time..
However I DO have a limited budget. Having found this place I am too scared to try anywhere else for fear I wouldn't like it.
I LOVE LOVE LOVE where I holiday. I actually cried when I arrived home.
If it suits you to try different places why the concern?

sooperdooper · 01/11/2015 22:47

I have been to the same place more than once but agree I wouldn't want to go to the same place every single time, I'd be bored - I like to see and do new things on holiday :)

Damselindestress · 01/11/2015 22:48

I can understand wanting variety but it's sometimes nice to revisit a place where you have happy memories. Maybe try out different places but don't rule out ever going back somewhere you had a good experience.

donajimena · 01/11/2015 22:49

I don't mind being unimaginative.... Wink

yummumto3girls · 01/11/2015 22:49

Sometimes, if the holiday exceeds all expectations and you have an amazing time then why not?! At least you know you are going to have a good time, spend less time orientating yourself with where local shop etc are and getting on with your holiday. I thought the same but after spending a fortune at a few crap hotels, we stuck with an amazing one for 3 years in the knowledge that everything suited our needs and standards.

AnnaMarlowe · 01/11/2015 22:49

Well, it's completely up to you how you spend your money and time but YABU to criticise how others choose to.

My family spent our holidays in the same place every year as I grew up - we all loved it and that area still has a very, very special place in my heart. I feel instantly relaxed when we go there. Instantly happy.

We tend to take our children different places each time and I often wonder if they are missing out on that connection.

Oysterbabe · 01/11/2015 22:50

I've never been to the same holiday destination twice so don't think yabu. I appreciate that others like to do so though.

susielovessocks · 01/11/2015 22:53

We are having exactly the same holiday next year as we had this year. We have talked about it for months, different locations, a bigger budget etc but we can't find anything we would rather do.
I feel like if we didn't enjoy a different place as much the holiday would be spoilt. Completely ridiculous I know.

ihateminecraft · 01/11/2015 22:54

With so many places in the world and so little time I think it's a waste to keep going to the same place. On the rare occasions we have gone somewhere more than once, it's never been the same. I know someone who goes to the same hotel in Ibiza every year (has been doing so for more than 10 years running) they meet the same crowd every year so kind of get why they do it. Another couple, who are loaded, only ever seem to go to Dubai, at least twice a year!

Dowser · 01/11/2015 22:54

We've been abroad to the same place three times this year. In fact it makes 12 times in the last four years.

It ticks all the boxes. I see a great therapist and we've made friends.

It's really reasonable. Sunshine practically guaranteed. Lovely people . Relatively safe

Whats not too like

Postchildrenpregranny · 01/11/2015 22:56

We went to Cornwall (family connections) most years-either Easter or May BH - when our DCs were growing up .They love it still, and joined us there this year . Lots of lovely memories and 'special' places .
Admittedly from when they were about 12 and 8 (our finances improved) we did start going abroad as well . I love travelling and enjoy going to different countries every year though

CocktailQueen · 01/11/2015 22:56

We have been to the same places a couple of years running but then generally find somewhere new. I can see both sides - if a place ticks all boxes and everyone likes it, then why risk changing?

Ricardian · 01/11/2015 22:56

This sounds like the punchline to a family argument.

When I had small children we re-visited a few places (ie, the nice ones) because going to the same place has the merit you know it'll be nice and you know the facilities work. For city-type holidays we went to places one of us had been for work, so we knew how the metro worked and where to buy tickets. Now the children are adults, we sometimes re-visit places where there are still things to do.

AnyFucker · 01/11/2015 22:58

I don't want to have to use my imagination on my holiday. I like to walk straight into relaxation and brain turned to mush for a fortnight.

So for that reason, I might go back to the same place if it was really great or I might not. I certainly don't make any judgements about what people like to do with their own precious vacation time

bedraggledmumoftwo · 01/11/2015 22:59

We have just rebooked the same place we went this year, never thought I would but it is for the ease of us knowing our way round already, kids hopefully being familiar, and maybe even, please, please, pretty please settle enough to go to the kids club even for a bit!

Shebangsthedrumsshedoes · 01/11/2015 23:02

I like really getting to know a place, feeling a part of it. I like that more than the skimming the surface of lots of places.

Costacoffeeplease · 01/11/2015 23:06

We always used to go to different places each holiday, then we came to a small resort in the Algarve in 1988, and went back, and back, and bought a place there, and we've now lived here for 12 years! as we left for the airport on our last morning I remember thinking 'this isn't the last time we'll come here'

Little did I know....

PippaPug · 01/11/2015 23:19

We tend to go back the same place with my friend and her kids - because there is a massive group (35 of us this year!) of us from all over the uk/abroad get together in the hotel complex for two weeks to properly catch up.

Friends all has a time share with a hotel chain but means we can go to any hotel over the world but we stick to the same one as all the kids (10 of them roughly!) love it as meet up with friends who they don't see for the rest of the year, they are safe and we are happy for them to wonder around the complex by themselves as they know it (teens) Staff all know us so we tend to get big discounts at each Meal which costs less, cheap flights, did I mention happy teens?!

DaylightSnobbery · 01/11/2015 23:20

We have gone back to the same place a couple of times as we had enjoyed it so much. Mostly because the Dc have asked to go back, because it was 'awesome' or whatever. Personally I would go for somewhere new and different every time. Pils have been to the same place and hotel for the last 10 years. I couldn't do that.

Mintyy · 01/11/2015 23:21

I just think life is short and the world is immense.

OP posts:
SoupDragon · 01/11/2015 23:27

I couldn't give a shit whether someone thinks going to the same place is unimaginative.

I have an every-even-year timeshare villa on a Caribbean beach. It is heavenly as a single parent to have a stress free holiday with no worries about whether it's crap or what to do.

People can holiday wherever they like in whatever manner they wish as far as I'm concerned.

If you don't want to go back to a place, don't.
If you do want to go back to a place, do.
Simple.

There's no need to put any such constraints on your choice of destination.

ghostyslovesheep · 01/11/2015 23:30

Next year will be my 3rd year at Holiday Village Menorca - not my choice in the first place - certainly not in the 3rd BUT with 3 kids on my own it works for us and they refused to consider anything else

I've been to a few places twice because I like them (Berlin, Munich etc) but I like to explore new places as well - my kids are just dull Grin

Mintyy · 01/11/2015 23:40

So that's yabu from you then Soupy.
