to never want to go to the same place twice for a holiday?

as we have a reasonable summer fortnight budget?

We don't have a huge or unlimited budget, far from it. But we are lucky enough to be able to go more or less anywhere within Europe for a couple of weeks in middle of the road self catering accom.

So aibu to think that it's not terribly imaginative to keep going back and back again to the same place in these circumstances?

A friend of mine has been to Menorca for 12 years in a row.
I just think that there is so much of the world to see and I would like to see as much of it as possible

Next year we'll be going to Butlins Minehead for the 13th time Grin

We always talk about going somewhere else, but it's got everything we like there. We do try and see new things in the area though.

It's the 'never' in the title that really surprises me. Surely if you go somewhere that's really lovely or interesting you might want to go back and explore the place further. I can't imagine saying 'no I don't care how gorgeous it is, or how little time we had to see it all, we are never coming back because we've ticked it off our list'.

That doesn't come across as particularly imaginative or interested in other places or cultures to be honest.

Pre-DS I scoffed at people who went back to the same places - how lacking in imagination they were and the world was to be discovered etc. etc.

Now it's a bit of a different matter Blush.

I do like the distinction between travelling and going on holiday. Like some on this thread we are fortunate enough to be able to afford to go on more than one holiday per year. What we do in the summer time varies - this time it was a road trip across Western Canada ( although we did go to some places that we had been to 10 years ago prior to having DS and loved), but October half term it's been Tenerife for the last 5 years and I can see it continuing for the next 5.

It's that lovely feeling of being able to relax as soon as you land - even the airport is familiar so as others have said you can almost relax as soon as you land. We've found our favourite holiday apartment complex - DS says it's his favourite place in the world, apart from Disneyworld of course. It's not perfect, but it has all the things that we've discovered are important to us at this particular point in our family life.

We've tried permutations around it - this year to save money I booked an apartment for the second half of the week. It was fine, but the pool wasn't warm, there was no bingo and we had to make our own breakfast. So next year everyone has demanded ( me included) that we go to the complex that we know and love.

If people think that is plebian of me, well fine, I'll stick two fingers up next year whilst drinking my pina colada at the swim in pool bar.

Pre kids I liked travelling to different places each holiday.

But now I just need something that ticks all the boxes and if I love it I can't wait to go back again. The familiarity is comforting and I know what to expect with no stress when I get there.

My DC find the whole thing of exploring a new villa, hotel etc one of the most exciting parts of the holiday.

A month in Thailand sounds idyllic - I backpacked there too and loved it. Was the weather ok in our summer though? I thought it was the rainy season then. Love it there.

PennyPants · 03/11/2015 10:28

We enjoy cruising, different port nearly everyday. Its suits my and Dh's need for something new and Dc's slightly comfort zone tendencies. (We have been on lots and they know what to expect. Next year we have let them choose where to go on holiday. They've chosen Center Parcs Hmm

I did the same holiday to Spain last year and this year. Same hotel and package. First time it was great but the second time it was not as fun for the following reasons: the weather wasn't as good so started noticing less desirable things about the hotel as we were out less, it became boring as we'd done it all, the things that were funny and different the first time got boring and annoying, knowing the area meant there was nothing much new to discover. It just felt too samey.

TheKitchenWitch · 03/11/2015 10:56

We have a holiday home so go there every year. It's wonderful, relaxing, beautiful, we absolutely love it. I suppose it depends what you want from a holiday, but being a tourist has never really interested me.

Salmiak · 03/11/2015 20:20

kangen the weather on koh samui was great, it rained for 2 days in the month we were there, plus some rain at night time when we were all inside anyway. I think it has its own micro climate because its an island.

LIZS · 03/11/2015 20:36

Sometimes we do , sometimes we don't. It also depends on the type of holiday. For skiing it saves the learning curve of orientation for lifts, slopes , cafes etc. We have taken the dc back to places we went before they were born and the experience is different. This year we went to same area as previous year but did not visit the same places.

Greebosmum · 03/11/2015 20:47

When I was young and lovely I would definitely have agreed.

Now I am old and wrinkly, DH and I have a few places that we love and we sort of rotate them.

Had we much more money and much more time, we would be more adventurous.

As it is we have limited money and limited time and we want to go somewhere we know we are going to enjoy.

Each to their own I would say.

overthemill · 03/11/2015 20:56

When we holidayed as a family we went to the same place most summers as we all loved it, loads to do and we loved that we knew it so well. Could just slip right into holiday mode with no stress at all. But for half term holidays we would go to one of 3 places - but when it was Greece ( often) it was a different island each time but Greece is Greece and it was pretty easy to chill. I don't see the problem. I would though loathe to spend hours going somewhere like Australia or the Caribbean- I can't see the point for 2 weeks. I'm sure it's lovely but not of interest for a break. When the kids are completely off our hands we might do India/ Africa/ South America but for several months, not 2 weeks

overthemill · 03/11/2015 20:58

And someone I know used to really poopoo our holidays get in the same place each summer then went and bought a house there!
