All evening they have been going on with pretty much no let up. I expect it for bonfire night. I expect it for New Years. But why is fireworks on Halloween suddenly a thing?! I've got a terrified dog shaking under my duvet and a 10 month old dd that's being kept up by the nearest ones thanks thin shitty bungalow walls

Is it the festival of lights?

jorahmormont · 31/10/2015 20:52

I sympathise, OP. We've had them all week here, bloody loud ones too, and I think they're coming from the same house every night. Should be banned with the exception of bonfire night and new years (and even then it should be restricted to public displays).

Fireworks are the one and only thing that I do get all uppity and pearl clutchy and "BAN THEM" about. There's literally no need for anyone to have a display in their garden, or on any other day of the year.

sooperdooper · 31/10/2015 20:54

Haven't heard any round here at all, isn't festival of light Diwalli, thought that was a couple of weeks ago?

jorahmormont · 31/10/2015 20:54

Oh and Diwali too. Okay when I am King Jorah Mormont I will accept organised displays for Diwali, new year and bonfire night. No exceptions.

Arkkorox · 31/10/2015 20:55

Might as well be the festival of fucking fireworks round here.

Diwali starts on the 11th November and goes on for 5 days or so, so don't expect a let up any time soon.

The simple answer to your question OP is that halloween is an excuse for a family friendly party, and the fireworks are in the shops ready for Nov 5th so people are using them to liven up their parties now.

It's probably easier to just go with the flow rather than get het up about it. Easy for me to say as the cats asleep on my bed and the baby hasn't stirred yet so perhaps I'm just lucky.

givemushypeasachance · 31/10/2015 20:57

I started a thread along much the same lines just earlier - it's like there's a whole ten day long season for fireworks now, from yesterday that'll no doubt last through the 5th and then to next weekend as well. At least when they're contained on one or two set nights you can prepare for them. Thankfully my scaredy cat has finally turned up and can now hide from the noise inside where it's at least safe.

trollkonor · 31/10/2015 20:58

Most of the organized displays here happen on the weekend before, or weekend after November 5th. The weekend before happens to be halloween.

There's a couple of displays that advertise coming in fancy dress and kinda cover both events.

soundsystem · 31/10/2015 20:58

Diwali isn't until November Fireworks here as well and I don't know why!

sarahlux · 31/10/2015 20:58

Got to admit I was just thinking the exact same thing my self.
There going off like crazy around here.

soundsystem · 31/10/2015 20:59

November 11th that should have said.

GlitteryFluff · 31/10/2015 21:03

As a poster above has said I think it's just because some places do a firework display the weekend before or the weekend after firework night if it falls in the middle of the week. It's Thursday so i'd expect some this weekend, Thursday and next weekend.

Arkkorox · 31/10/2015 21:07

That's the thing though, bonfire night / weekend/ week or whatever I don't mind them. But honestly I'm not exaggerating when I say they have been going off all evening, it's just ridiculous. I expected a few but not hours worth on Halloween!

Our town fire work display is tonight! They generally do it on the first Saturday before the 5th but this is a bit much in my opinion.

Figgygal · 31/10/2015 21:09

Festival of inconsiderate fuckwits!!

pinotblush · 31/10/2015 21:09

So what on earth is wrong with that? People do have parties running up to 5th November, theres no stipulation saying these should only be let off then. Lots of birthdays go on now you know.

I love it!

givemushypeasachance · 31/10/2015 21:15

Fireworks are fun to watch, and no one is arguing that they should be banned full-stop (though some argue should be left to the professionals and formal displays, and not often drunk people in back gardens or teenagers on the streets from the second it gets dark up till gone midnight). But it's having them going off unpredictably over a period of ten days or more - then adding on birthdays and weddings and anything else throughout the year. People with terrified pets and scared children can take precautions for a night or two if it's contained to just a limited time, but it seems to get dragged out longer and longer every year.

Here we had some going off last night - Friday 30 October, why? And this evening, people having early bonfire night or halloween parties have been setting them off since 6pm and it's now 9pm - there are still some going. It's antisocial.

Arkkorox · 31/10/2015 21:16

pinot I'm going to assume you're not one of us who have a terrified pet hiding under their legs.

OP posts:
Cloudyflower · 31/10/2015 21:18

I hate them! Should be professional displays only not drunken knobheads letting them off in their gardens that are too close to other houses and terrifying for some poor animals.

pinotblush · 31/10/2015 21:19

But seriously, its not like it goes on all year is it? a weekend or so before and after isnt unreasonable at all.

Arkkorox · 31/10/2015 21:22

pinot it's pretty much every weekend from now till new year. So no, it's not just this weekend.

OP posts:
NoahVale · 31/10/2015 21:22

same here, so very annoying.

NigelLikesSalad · 31/10/2015 21:25

We've had them going off all night. Luckily our dog doesn't give a toss and LO is so tired he's fast asleep and not stirred. I don't even think you should just be able to buy fireworks in a shop. Licensed, professional organised displays only if i had my way. :) They're dangerous, annoying and the people that use them rarely seem to give a toss where the debris ends up.

Cloudyflower · 31/10/2015 21:26

Pinot, it'll be going on until new year now around here. I just don't think it's a good idea that anyone can go and buy fireworks.

I don't see any reason why it shouldn't be limited to professional displays only.

Nearlycaughtawoozle · 31/10/2015 21:26

Loads of fireworks round here as well - daren't let the dogs out for a wee. Ddog1 is ok but ddog2 is pacing and nervous. I like fireworks but think they should be limited to public/professionally run displays.
